Nintendo hired a former Capcom artist known for doing Mega Man lolicon and incest porn to draw for the TCG. This is not exactly out of character for them.
It was ALWAYS wrong
It's really easy to convert a higher polygon mesh to a lower polygon one in pretty much every 3D modeling program, it's literally just clicking a few options then maybe manually cleaning up any minor issues that are caused afterwards.
as far as we can tell there is no reason to think any of this was intended to go into th game. i'm still waiting for the first appearance of gordon.
I mean, you can see where pieces of it kind of do.
The higher polygon count for a game that would be released a year later makes me cringe so hard. No reason for that outside of sadism.
That's why I'm confused, because (from my layman perspective), there's not major difference between these two except for how the faces are triangulated. If one were really meant to be a lower poly count than the other, I would expect to see some meaningful differences between the meshes. The colors shouldn't be lining up exactly, after I've drawn over them like that.
he said it was intended to go in the game. even your example of the chart was clearly never intended to be part of the final product. we never got smilay or the gordon trio. other than these files existing at all, there doesn't seem to be any reason to think they wanted to make pedo typhlosion canon, which is why those books never made it into the game. wise decision on their part by all accounts.

I love the Johto/Kanto map, but it's really frustrating they show the Safari Zone front and center but it's inaccessible in the game proper.
