Aren't voice actors in Japan unionized? I'd imagine the games relatively low budgets (if the leaks are to be believed) would be the explanation.
I think its a mixture of low budget and the people at game freaks being lazy fucks.
Considering that they hired toby in the past, the bare minimum they can't even bother to do is banjo/paper mario/undertale thing of having sounds play when text scrolls that changes depending of the character; alternatively do the Hollow knight ruote and record some gibberish speech to play when characters talk.
Thank you guys, figured it was relating to Game Freak being lazy and low budget given how cheaply the series is made. Side games have used voice acting in the past, with the Stadium games, Battle Revolution, and the Detective Pikachu games being the biggest examples of Pokemon games having voice work in them.

Caught wind of this disaster and expected to see posts just shitting on the game, but a lot of you actually fucking bought it.
Why?
I bought it, but it was a gift. As to why this family member still loves pokemon games, I have no idea. They called me to say thanks again and told me they're having a blast playing it.

I have no idea if it's actually good or not, I haven't played a Pokemon game since gold version.

At this point all I can assume is it's childhood brand loyalty. Probably the same reason my normie friend loves Pokemon. Every time my other friends try and critique the newer games he brushes it aside or gets defensive. Real Disney adult kinda shit.

Disclaimer: I did not spend money on this.

Beat the main story last night; I started playing a day after the leaks dropped and found myself compelled to see it through to the end because despite myself, Pokemon is really hard for me to put down. I just wanted to jot down the pros and cons because I feel like many of them got a bit lost or grossly exaggerated in the Internet rage machine:

- All my favorite activities from Legends: Arceus are still here. Exploring the city to find hidden rooftops and crannies where rare Pokemon spawn more frequently, or finding random Alpha versions to catch were great. One memorable encounter where I was jumped by an Alpha Sharpedo and two of his Carvanha buddies caught me off guard, and barely cinching that battle by the skin of my teeth was a lot of fun. Exploring the city for Colorful Screws to upgrade things like EXP gain and damage capacity was much more unique than an industry-standard skill tree. Anytime I got a notification that new Wild Zones were open, I'd blow off the story to go straight there and find out what I could capture next.
- The Mega Evolution battles were a highlight for me. I appreciated having other team members of MZ fight beside you, as it makes them feel less useless than your typical friendly rival characters in Pokemon games. Giving each Mega Evolved Pokemon its own unique special attack, like Mega Beedrill's Pin Missile and Mega Banette's illusion copies added a unique twist to each one. Even if I never ended using their Mega Stones, I liked unlocking them through these cool arena battles.
- This is the best character customization I've seen in a Pokemon game thus far, and I hope Game Freak keeps these options going forward, particularly the hairstyle coloring options.

- Putting aside how badly the game looks or runs on Switch 1, Lumiose City just isn't very interesting to look at. The only real way to tell different sectors apart is by the colored banners on the buildings nearby, and the slight change in the music.
- There's only one track of music for Lumiose City during the day and one for the night. At a minimum there should also be a version for when it's raining, and maybe have the music start to slow down or speed up as day or night starts to ends. It really started to grate on me after awhile; if you're only going to have two tracks of music to listen to for hours while walking around the city, they'd better be the best music tracks I've ever heard. The music for some of the promotion match battles (Lady Jacinthe's theme especially) were bangers, but you barely get to hear them.
- The actual night-time Battle Royale goes by so quickly that I barely remember it. These battles remind me of those Team Star bases from Scarlet/Violet where you just mash the R button with your Pokemon to knock out Team Star grunts because they're so weak you can swat them down like flies. Whether or not you're able to sneak up on a trainer before they spin around and spot you is up to the whims of fate, and the biggest challenge of these segments is trying to find enough trainers to fight before the night ends.
- Side quests are underwhelming. I did around half of them before deciding it wasn't worth my time to do any more. I want to say half of them boil down to either "bring me this particular Pokemon" or "fight me", and it just feels like filler. I was initially expecting these side quests to be requests sent to Emma and her detective agency, but apparently only the first three were like that. I would've gladly preferred Game Freak cut like five of these boring "tutorial battle" side quests in exchange for one decent side quest where you investigate a missing person or stolen property.
- I cannot stress enough how much the first two or three hours of this game suck, with its endless tutorials and lack of freedom to explore the city. The biggest crime of all though is that it's a complete bait-and-switch; you do the grind of the Z-A Royale for a few ranks, then get promoted from Rank V all the way up to F, and then the game starts feeling like a Pokemon game, with the promotion match trainers being stand-ins for Gym Leaders and typical Pokemon story beats. I completely understand why most people drop this game after two hours because of the initial presentation. If they had somehow just started you at Rank F people might have been a little more forgiving, but that would undermine the whole premise of the game.

Overall, while I enjoyed some of the characters, story beats, and the ending, the cons definitely outweigh the pros for me. As a sequel to Legends: Arceus, there's a lot of crap they added that gets in the way of what I enjoyed in the first Legends game. As a follow-up to Pokemon X & Y, it's not that great (can't even rollerskate or pet your Pokemon, Pokemon-amie style anymore). It's just not very good, and I can see why games like Palworld and Digimon are taking bites out of Pokemon's market.

And I completed the post-story stuff, Lysandre actually gave me a bit of trouble (although that one was my fault, I forgot that he has Mega Gyarados) and I decided to cheese Zygarde with a Calm Mind/Wish Moonlight Clefable packing its Mega Stone.

And now to work on the trade evos (pro tip: if you focus on item-required evos and exclude the wild Alpha Steelix you catch in the post-game from counting you’ll complete the “evolving via Link Trade” research task too), once that’s done I’ll have to work on completing the rest of the research tasks with a special “fuck off” to the 1,000 battles task.
Don't even look into Pokemon TCG. You would think it died decades ago but no. It got bigger and adults drive around shops and fight over booster packs.
The TCG is “fine” so long as you stick to playing the game and buying singles, the scalper-related problems only pop up is you’re trying to buy sealed products or anything rarer than a standard Full Art card.

I say “fine” because the competitive scene is a bit of a mess thanks to Creatures giving some types like Psychic special treatement and not doing anything to nerf Gholdengo ex.
I’m kind of in the same boat review-wise, I think part of the reason why I’m not loving it as much as PLA is due to GF having the “bright” idea of bringing over more multiplayer stuff to the game and tying 100%+ completion to it sucks.

Well it look like I can add the “filling your Mega Evolution Pokédex” task to the “fuck off” list, the last one needed to complete it is Mega Floette and to get that one you need complete the Infinite Z-A Royale 15 times.
Those things enter Home perfectly fine even with the impossible date met so just go for it GF doesn't even care.
To be fair that’s partially due to met dates tying to when you were gifted a Pokémon, not when the Wonder Card was obtained (which AFAIK isn’t recorded on the actual Pokémon file). That said I’d still muck around with the 3DS/DS calendar to be extra-safe.

While I appreciate Mega Dragonite getting Dratini-Dragonair throwback details, I'm still mega (lol) disappointed they didn't give us any regional variants.

In addition to the GameCube graphics too, I mean. But the main reason I got hyped for Z-A was the regionals and it being a continuation of Legends. I don't even like France and I know they have plenty of interesting cultural shit you could have had fun with in terms of design.

-Like a haunted baroque mantle clock or rococo painting? Easy regional ghosts.

Check out this news that I just saw:

RIO – Civil police officers from the Rio de Janeiro Child and Adolescent Victims Police Station (DCAV) arrested digital influencer João Paulo Manoel, 45, known as Capitão Hunter, who produces content for children, on Wednesday, the 22nd, on suspicion of rape of a vulnerable person and production of child pornography. His defense was not located.

The influencer is being investigated for crimes against a girl and a boy, with whom he had contact through social media and events. The man was arrested in Santo André, São Paulo, with the support of the São Paulo Civil Police.

With around 1 million followers on his profiles, the influencer produces content about the world of Pokémon cards and games for an audience mostly made up of children and teenagers, according to the Civil Police.

According to investigations, one of the victims is a 13-year-old girl who lives in Rio de Janeiro and met the influencer at an event at Norte Shopping Center, in the north zone of Rio, in 2023, when she was 11 years old.

"After that, they started to keep in touch through social media, as the criminal promised her parents that he would follow and support her journey in the game,” says the police.

The victim reported that the man began asking for sexual content, such as intimate photos, in exchange for letters or Pokémon plush toys. He also sent several inappropriate photos of himself to the girl.

According to the victim, the influencer sent photos of his penis twice via WhatsApp and twice via Discord, in his underwear.

According to the police, in conversations recorded by the girl on social media, "it was possible to confirm the influencer's behavior. The same man had allegedly approached an 11-year-old boy in the same manner."

The Police served warrants for the crimes of rape of a vulnerable person and production of child pornography. Officers also served search and seizure warrants and breached data confidentiality. All electronic devices recovered will be forensically examined.

16 hours ago he was posting a video opening a megaevolution pokemon card pack and now they are going to open his anus in prison.

How's Legends Z/A so far? I bought it last week but haven't had chance to play it yet. Heard it's pretty fun, but lacking in several areas like exploration. No need to mention the visuals because that sadly goes without saying.

If you would like to explore a city that takes 7 minutes to cross and looks like a cardboard cutout the game will probably be lovely for you. Otherwise, stay clear.

The gameplay also seems to be very mindless and button mashy. If they wanted to get out of the turn based system this was not it.
