Technically not wrong. There's no 100% way to guard against STIs or pregnancy, other than the tried and true tested method of just not having sex. Every time you have sex with someone who isn't your long time significant other, there is always some level of risk, and even your significant other may not be trustworthy if they cheat on you. I imagine, within these poly communities, there is a lot discussion regarding risks and mitigation.
