People actually use the DM system still? What the fuck? The only direct mail I get sent is bills, luh?
It's useful for coordinating when gathering information on lolcows or asking a one-off question to someone that doesn't belong in a thread. Dear Feeder has also asked people to DM him directly if you had a particular concern about the website that's best kept off the forums (that was a very special case, Talk To Staff would still probably be best for general moderation concerns).

The most annoying aspect of the DM chain system is that any participant is able to invite more, which often results in unwelcome participants such as @Madre Muerte wrecking the discussion or spamming the thread. It would make more sense that only the DM OP or OP and first participant can invite more.

Does this not work?

I don’t hate the DM function but I do agree the mass invites are stupid and unnecessary. I think having the DM notifications act the same as thread notifications would help as well, there’s no reason to get updated on every reply. Also you said you can see who invited you but where would that be at? Is there an icon by their username? Last I checked I couldn’t see one but then again it was in a DM with many members so I could have skimmed past it.

EDIT: I’m a complete moron, I just noticed that whoever invited you is under your name.

I think that if people feel they can't talk conversationally on the main off-topic boards, I'm doing something really wrong and I'd like to see how it can be loosened up.
I don't know that you're doing anything wrong. I just think people probably find DM chains more rewarding and convenient to use than threads for conversation. DM chains tend to move faster than threads and feel more intimate, and you can discuss literally anything all in the same spot.

Maybe you could experiment with free-for-all chat threads. You could make them time limited to X days/week/whatever. Then you'd close the thread and make a new one. When you create those temp boards like the pajeet board or Halloween board, people really enjoy it and they also seem motivated to keep the board active right up until you delete it.

I concur. I both need and want to be in dozens of mass DM chains that are all congruently shitposting in different ways.
I was actually thinking that a thread would be eventually made for this, such that if you ever post there, you declare yourself open to all retarded DM invites. It would allow people who don't want to be invited to random DMs to have peace, but people who want the Classic DM Experience can just post there and get invited to 50 shitshows.
Yeah, that checkbox is a lie.

Every name in the DM member list has "Invited by <name>" under it.

For a big fat woman you have surprisingly good ideas. If I were running the show I'd modify TSIC so that it bears similarity to your suggestion.

Perhaps we need an “enthusiastic consent to DM form”.
I don't mind being invited.
I give my consent to be invited to any and all pm chains, especially if they're super autistic and filled with spergs
I was invited to two so far, Ed's gay friends chat which appears to have been started by a harasser here then turned into everyone making fun of him. The other was some kkk thing that got deleted last week I think.
Both were hilarious. Invite me to everything. I will not narc.
Thread is talking in the street, DM chain is talking in the pub. Room for both.
That's the best way I've heard it put. There are things you would talk about in the pub that you wouldn't in the street, with the understanding that it's still not completely private.

I've been invited to very few of these in the last years. They never really had a point and I left them anyway to keep my notifications clean.

What even happened this time? Are people spamming gore in these now that it's an issue?
User @Catler, after making some incredibly suspicious comments suggesting familiarity with a Discord-centric troon pedo grooming ring broadly known as the “boykisser” community which recently got a thread in PG, fled the site and shortly after was exposed to have hosted several long-running PM chains involving gay furry scat ERP and hentai with a handful of other users. You can learn more about it from @notorietus and his posts in Community Happenings.

Discord could not take down Kiwi Farms, so they sought to turn Kiwi Farms into Discord instead.
Truly disgusting.
