PS3, Vita, And PSP Stores To Be Permanently Closed In A Few Months - fuck game preservation lol - Sony

Build a PC and just emulate console games. Hell play it better than the original hardware.
You're talking about two systems (Vita and PS3) that can't be properly emulated.

Part of the reason why sony is closing the online stores is that they're not on X86, their hardware is tedious to sort through and get shit right from a development angle let alone to reverse engineer. You have maybe less than 10 PS3 games that can sorta work on emulation.

physical won't save you from the rest of your system breaking down at some point either.
The N64 with it's dying controllers springs to mind.

People didn't even make this big of a deal when OG Xbox Live and Wiishop closed and they're letting you still keep your games like the wii did
Yes they did.

Doesn't anyone care about physical media and archival, anymore? These things are a touchstone and a gateway to our past. Why this obsession with neophilia and living in the eternal present?
I care. Nerds like us care. Normies don't. They chase "the zeitgeist" forever, maybe keeping a couple of favourites.

Sure I don't "own" my Steam/GOG games, but at least I know they'll still be playable for me as long as I have some kind of Windows PC.
Steam shut down winXP support a while ago. You can still install an old steam client and download games, but no one is sure if that'll end some day.

Yes they did.
I never really saw this much of a meltdown over it (I even went far back on youtube looking and nothing really was thermonuclear), and I even bought a Retro-bit Retrocade because it contains the official wii shop roms to many of the older games on the store like the Final Fight Trilogy. The PS3 and Vita purchases were apparently less than half of a % in total for Sony's online profits. Which was probably still more than it was to keep the servers running.

I mean it's a long shot but I'm hoping this leads to people wanting better software rights protections and end of life service for stuff being heavily mandated and not an exception.

But people will trade convenience for freedom 9 times out of 10.

I did. I think the most recent one even had a thread here. Where ever it was, I remember the discussion being pretty much the same as it is in this thread. Archivists morn, normies don't care, a couple of YouTube talking heads. The main difference was the Wii was completely archived and emulated well.

there are 5 possible routes this can go

1. Sony realizes "oh crap we fucked up" and puts the server shutdown on hold until they can find a way to add complete backwards compatibility to ps5 (psp and Vita will be tricker due to smaller disk size so instead they put all of those games that didnt get console rereleases up for digital download on the ps4/ps5. Same goes for the ps1/ps2 classic games and download only titles)

2. Sony does shut down the servers but it turns out they had plans for backwards compatibility/ digital download all along and take a page from xbox

3. same as above but with no physichal backwards compatibility only rebuying the games from a digital storefront

4. PS Now

5. Soyny act like complete and utter retards and go ahead with their bullshit plan... Pthe playstation brand either dies with the ps5 or ps6

It didn't take that long for the people that insist on disc-only to be proven somewhat right, but what are your options when the disc needs a day 1 patch that's gigabytes upon gigabytes? At least it's not as bad as the Switch where some games such as Spyro only contain half the game, I guess.

There are games out there worth playing, like Asura's Wrath with conclusions that are locked into DLC. If games are "art", then surely these companies have an obligation to continue making them available, through something better than selling Super Mario Bros on every new console. Streaming them through a Stadia-like service doesn't cut it, in my opinion.

There's many games that don't require a massive day one patch.

Games like the Final Fantasy 7 remake came with an installation disc and the PS5 version is also coming like this.

Monster Hunter World had all it's original stuff contained on the Iceborne disc.

Honestly, Asura's Wrath was what came to mind when I first heard about this. I've been wanting to play that one for some time because I hear it's pretty good and the ending really brings closure to everything. However, if I want to experience it, I'll have to scramble to get a copy and the DLC before the July deadline. It is available on Xbox, but I don't have one and I don't think buying an entire system to play a handful of games is worth it.

There are other examples like Mass Effect and Prince of Persia 2008, but those have the benefit of being released on PC on services that are most likely going to be up in the foreseeable future.

This is such bullshit when the PS3 is not even 15 years old yet, come back in another 5 years and maybe it would make sense, but come onnnnnnnnnn...

I got a couple of questions though.

Can you buy shit from the PSN store online or does it require using an actual PS3?

The main thing I want is Siren Blood Curse which was digital only in the US, but could I buy a physical European copy and have it work on my NA PS3? Is the PS3 region locked?

People didn't even make this big of a deal when OG Xbox Live and Wiishop closed and they're letting you still keep your games like the wii did, like damn I'm hoping this starts to force companies to test and implement their end of life service plans. Steam claims to have one, but it's all theoretical and they've never actually done a widescale test of it.

This will be quite interesting to watch, we're most certainly in uncharted territory.
When did OG Xbox Live shutdown? I seem to remember it was a long time ago, there's still games I regret not playing online or DLC I regret not getting especially since I technically had it for the 360 but was more focused on the 360.

I definitely feel like Microsoft shut OG Xbox Live down way too quickly, I want to say it only lasted something like ten years.

PS3 isn't region locked and you have to buy digital using the system itself.

Microsoft shut down xbox live in 2010 to get people to move over to Xbox 360. Every time we've had a major network shutdown people just tend to forget it after a few months, there's yet to be any long term repercussions.

So I can just buy a PAL copy of the PS3 Siren and play it on my NA PS3? Good to know I have that option, but there a few other (not as important) things only on the PSN.

I just wish it wasn't happening so soon, an extra month or two would at least would be nice, why does it have to be July 2?

You're telling me the original Xbox Live didn't even last a decade? That's such bullshit.

Checking rpcs3.net shows that 1903 PS3 games are playable on PC. Vita has 9 playable games.

Yeah well that's a gross overestimate, you can try running them and watch as they continuously fuck up. Play for a few hours you'll come across errors and inaccuracies.

It states that " Games that can be completed with playable performance and no game breaking glitches" So I am sure that it can run without much issues. Just more reason why to build a PC as Sony will not make these games playable on PS5.

This is especially bad for PS3 games because they can't be played on either the PS4 or 5 unless, surprise surprise, you pay for a digital version of them on the PS4 store.

Fuck you Sony
It's sounding like we're getting Physical re-releases there's a rumored GOW collection coming up since Ragnarok got pushed back to 2022.

Dude, Skyrim for the PS3 was released in a playable state. There's much opinion on what constitutes playable. Every version of Shadow of the Colossus for the PS3 was released in a broken state with the wanderer fucking up and being unable to grab properly, the game has never been fixed even officially. That's why the PS4 remaster came out.

Apparently some developers weren't told ahead of time that Sony were closing the stores so some are rushing to get the games out on time or outright cancelling.

(I'd take this with a grain of salt since there doesn't seem to be much proof but it's worth pointing out.)

It's been only two small team vita developers that have had issues because they posted pictures of the dev kit on social media. The cards themselves stopped being manufactured a year and a half ago and companies like Limited Run have been sourcing remaining cards from existing stock. You can still publish new vita games physically but you usually have to go through a company like LRG or Playasia. They published physical PS3 games last year with the OddWorld games.

You've got collectors willing to pay upwards of 50 grand for a dev kit. More if it contains the actual box and paperwork.

That being said this isn't out of the ordinary. Rhodea the Sky Solider was a similar circumstance which was why the deluxe edition came with a wii disc and a wii-u disc, and there's a buttload of canceled n64 games who's prototypes are still being looked for. Most games that are the most expensive tend to be released towards the end of the console.

For those looking for resources to help them find PSN exclusives, here are some links:
Gematsu - The column on the right is PSN exclusives. Anything in red is outright exclusive to the PS3 PSN and will be lost entirely once the store shuts down, but the list isn't 100% accurate. Okami HD is region free and the Japanese disc plays in English. Tokyo Jungle is listed as a PSN exclusive. Not perfect, but a good place to start.

Reddit PS3 Mega Thread - A list of games that are exclusive to 7th gen consoles and to the PS3. Sorted by critical reception, and disc released games are marked by a disc emoji.

GameFaqs - Late 90's Relic, but it has alright filtering function to show say all PSN Adventure games.

inFamous: Festival of Blood - Standalone DLC spinoff of inFamous 2. Not released on disc, although if you can find an unopened copy of the inFamous PS3 collection it has a code for Festival of Blood. Note that it isn't on the collection disc, it only came with a code.

Space Invaders: The Infinity Gene - Rhythm focused shoot 'em up that's long been delisted from the mobile stores, leaving only the 360 and PS3 versions. Fantastic soundtrack like most modern Space Invaders games

Everyday Shooter - A bullet hell arcade shooter focused around music and striking visual styles. Console exclusive to the PS3 and PSP, but was also released on Steam.

Echochrome
- A perspective puzzle game for the PSP (plus PS Vita) and PS3 based on the art of M.C. Ecsher. There's a Move exclusive Echochrome 2 and a PSP followup called Echoshift that was PSN only in the US.

Tokyo Jungle - I see this one all over PSN only lists, despite it being on the PSN collection disc. Fun beat em up action game with a unique premise and setting of a post human Tokyo. Beyond the game there are a ton of DLC animals and costumes for it that are PSN exclusive.

TxK - Infamously cancelled for all platforms except Vita over legal threats from the lawyers that own Atari, this is the perfection of the Tempest formula. Superseded my Tempest 4000 on consoles and PC but still worth playing in its own right.

Linger in Shadow - More of an interactive tech demo of what the PS3 could do than a game. Looks cool, not much gameplay.

Bomberman Ultra and Locoroco Cocoreccho! - Haven't actually played these but I liked other games in the series and they reviewed well.

adhoc Party - Lets you play local PSP multiplayer through your PS3's internet connection. Extremely niche, but it does apparently still work and it's free.

These are all exclusive to the effected systems and are not cross buy. Notable other recommendations that are available elsewhere are Space Invaders: Extreme, Sound Shapes, Okami HD, LittleBigPlanet DLC that wasn't on the disc collections, Siralim, and Race the Sun. I'd also recommend Rock Band: Blitz and Scott Pilgrim vs the World but those have both long been delisted so you'll have to hit up NoPayStation.

Apparently games that are cross-buy with the PS4 or PS5 will provide their PS3 and Vita versions after the shut down. There were a ton of indie games that were portable exclusive on the Vita that'll still be buyable with this, plus most of Sony's downloadable games from the time when the Vita was relevant. I'd also ignore PS1 games personally considering how easy iso injections are for all 3 systems.
