Community Quiverfull Movement Lolcows - Starring the Duggars

Huh, so those ostentatious, moralizing, religious fundamentalists turned out to be a bunch of hypocritical pedofork enablers. Didn't see that coming!

Nah, not really pedofork. It was more of a Lena Dunham-style sexual abuse situation.

A 13 year old kid feeling up his sister while she's asleep isn't really in the same neighbourhood or even subdivision as a pedophile.

The whole story is however excellent proof that left wingnuts are every bit as unbearable and assholeish as right wingnuts*:

"OMG! How can you call a 13 year old boy a 'thug' just because he burns or loots a store! Not saying it's not wrong but, he's just a child an- what? One of the Dugars did WHAT as a 13 year old? Why that's an OUTRAGE! I'm gonna blog about this every chance I get to shame those Christian wackos!"

I read that article. And the comments. On the bright side there is less outright gloating and schadenfreude than in the related articles on Kos.

But of course, only a few of the "those poor girls" comments took the thought to its natural conclusion: Maybe that story should never have seen the light of day, seeing as its an old story, that has already been dealt with by law enforcement. And running it doesn't serve much of a purpose except gloating over evil republikkkans, and whoops, re victimizing the kids.

@Fapcup Have you read this thread recently?

According to reports, upon admitting he had molested children, Josh Duggar was given a "stern talk" by a police officer and family friend who then released him without pursuing charges. That officer is currently serving 56 years for possession of child pornography.

Wait... Are you defending them?

Defending who? The Duggar kids? In particular the girls who were violated in their sleep? Hell yes.

They never asked to be part of Jim Bobs 19 kids freak show.. And they sure as hell never asked to be part of the kind of gleeful ohh-the-hypocrisy-coverage we're seeing, that doesn't really serve any purpose except for schadenfreude at "the other side" and click fodder for Daily Kos.

Or did you mean whether I'm defending their brother? Nope, I believe he should be dealt with by the authorities, with the kind of leniency you usually afford minors.

(Then again, seeing as even kids can get executed in the US, maybe it's partly a cultural difference. I live in a country where the age of criminal responsibility is 15, so whayevwr Duggar Jr. did wouldn't have been a matter for the criminal justice system)

What I don't believe in however, is dog piling on someone for something he did when he was 13. Nobody deserves that. Especially when it's a matter that the authorities are aware of and have dealt with, when it takes the form of slimy rape-insinuations, and when the primary reason for the pearl clutching is that you disagree with him or his father religious or political views.

But yup, I'm defending the girls. Not just the ones that were groped and assaulted, but also their sisters, who'll have to deal with assholes asking them "Are you the one that got raped?" from here to eternity because of Daily Kos and their "lulz! Republikkkan Hypocrites!"

Now don't get me wrong...

I don't judge anybody for gleefully getting their daily dose of gloat and schadenfreude. But the decent thing would be to get it without dragging teenage girls through the mud.

Teenage girls who didn't consent to being groped by their brother, and who sure as hell didn't consent to the whole nation hearing about it because the cheap, standing room only section of the left of centre's goon squad wanted to get a cheap "lol! Christian Hypocrites" thrill with the morning coffee.

The sad part is, that those laughs are the only reason for this story. It won't change anything, or change anybody's mind.

The people who thought the Duggars were a nutty freakshow and exploiting their kids think exactly the same.

Christians and people who were sympathetic towards the Duggars already know how flawed humans are, and built a whole theology around the concept of original sin and divine forgiveness, and just got more confirmation of that. No minds changed there.

The only thing that has changed, is the girls can never get their privacy back, they'll always be known as rape/sexual assault/incest victims and whatever else is insinuated. Their most embarrassingly intimate secrets, were taken away from them. They lost all agency in what to tell to who, and will have to live their lives knowing that anyone they ever meet is one Google search away from knowing about this.

But hey, hope your laugh at the Duggars was worth it.

There are idiots and parts of the media who are ignoring how this is a serious situation and a serious crime that was covered up for years, that is true.

However, we can mock the movement the Duggars are a part of because it is an incredibly stupid sect based off of a very small portion of the Bible (particularly Psalm 127). Even if they are disturbing in their treatment of women and children, their views are fundamentally absurd and people are rightfully mocking them for the implications of it. Just because something is someone's religious belief doesn't mean it's free from criticism and mockery. And part of how the abuse was covered up ties into their sect's beliefs (particularly all the victim blaming), thus why the belief system is brought up in the discussion of the abuses.

I'm not sympathetic to the Duggars because there is a difference between the inherent flaws everyone has, because nobody is perfect, and committing/covering up serious crimes then hiding behind one's faith when they were inevitably caught. It's loathsome. It's made worse by their defenders then acting as though everyone else would molest kids if given the opportunity, which is both factually wrong and disturbing.

I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish here. You say we shouldn't talk about the abuse or 'use it' to prove a point, but you're using it to say that it should have remained covered up.

(beyond your point) Don't you see how difficult it is not to appropriate this information? The Duggars painted their christian sect as virtue while covering up sexual assault using the strictures of their sect. That's inevitably going to come up.

@Fapcup Josh was at least 16 years old, and one of his victims was 4. His crimes spanned years, well beyond some "childhood mistake", and when they finally did approach the authorities they did so in a manner that ensured it would be swept under the rug. Do you believe it's a coincidence that the police officer the Duggars consulted is a convicted pedophile?

This needs to be talked about because sexual assault is a serious crime, and one that should always come with repercussions. The Duggars preach holier-than-thou virtues, yet they are disgusting people underneath it all (or, in my opinion, quite close to the surface). Society needs to be reminded on occasion that crimes cannot be overlooked simply because the criminals are "appealing".

@Fapcup him being 13-15 (though I've also seen 16-19) over the course of the incidents doesn't change that the victims are his own sisters, nor does age excuse what he did. One of them was around the age of 4 or 5 at the time of the abuse. I'm sorry you get offended by people having political and religious views contradictory to your own. Sexual abuse, especially of children, especially of pre-pubescent children, is inexcusable.
