The thing that bothers me checking in on this community off and on over the years is when it is framed as a sexuality. “Coming out to my parents I’m Poly” etc when the reality is having multiple partners if one had resources was completely the norm throughout most of written history.

Heck Biblically Solomon was pushing like 700 women; it wasn’t called polyamory.

Ya know, I don't know you and I've never done a damn thing to you ever. Despite that you decide to just ruin my fucking week by explaining that I was wrong and the kid has been physically abused and almost certainly sexually abused by these people. In all honesty foster care may actually be the solution to the problem even though it's a hive of abuse itself. At least with foster care the kid has a chance(no matter how small it may be) to not be abused. It would be better than having to live with a bunch of rapists that your own mom brings into the house.

fucking a bunch of people because you're rich/powerful has never been the norm for women in history, only men. Birth control is too new to have affected the dynamic, it is dangerous reproductively (and to some extent physically) for a woman to fuck a bunch of guys. Women prefer monogamy. some portion of men do too. I don't know if more men or women drive the current movement of polyamorous people on reddit, all I know for sure is that it is primarily ugly people. gay men are rarely exclusive, but when they fuck other guys they don't pretend it is about something other than fucking.

opportunistic sex on a mass scale is what is expected of men historically, and is not the same thing as polyamory. poly people pretend to be capable of marriage-level commitment to several people at once. they claim they are more capable of love than everyone else because they are in polyamorous relationships. They also claim that since it is an orientation you're conversion-therapying them if you say it is gross or if you're one of the "partners" and don't want to invite more people into the relationship. they're not ghengis kahn or even a small time cult leader, those types know they just like to bang a lot. so many poly people are on HRT, obese, and have autistic sensory problems that I'm not positive a lot of sex is happening compared to monogamous couples anyway, it is like they minimized the amount of sex that could be had in order to maximize the worst parts of relationships (drama, initial dating, breaking up, fighting, jealousy, betrayal, STDs, etc).

Both men and women are equally as capable of slutting it up. Birth control sort of removing the mental block for a lot of women and the proportion of women willing to be promiscuous even without it is higher than some would like to believe for whatever reason. You're supposed to be very selective but we all know a lot of women aren't for a variety of reasons plus if you're TOO selective you'll never pass on your genes. Upbringing and adherence to social mores are better guardrails than basic nature TBH.

I think there are levels to it. 1. people who want mono and nothing else from the outset 2. people that settle down and are mono because they realize what it's like being in a genuine relationship 3. people who don't sleep around because of a belief system. Usually people that are highly promiscuous of either sex have something wrong with them. And they're on the fringe in the way people who don't really enjoy having sex at all are. It's most beneficial to have a handful of partners throughout your life or go from closed relationship to closed relationship for a variety of reasons like: presence of kids, mental sanity, and aversion to STDs. Men and women often have different approaches to sex but I think people overplay what this means in reality. Just because it's technically easier for men to have casual sex with no downsides on the shallow end doesn't mean that overall different sexual practices are good for either or. Only a small minority of guys even have an easy time getting casual sex on the reg so they don't really get to take advantage of their different reaction to meaningless sex in the first place lmao

My assumption was always that it was people who spent a lot of their lives alone getting into these relationships to prove to themselves and the world how desirable and loved they are.
