I think part of it is the culture of polyamory. They love this idea that they’re the superior, futuristic form of relationship, free of jealousy, loneliness and resentment. They’re afraid of expressing their emotions lest they look like one of those uncool monogamous types. So it doesn’t get addressed until the problem becomes a seething abscess of neurotic rage.

It depends on how sophisticated they are, but a lot of them are so blatant you'd have to be retarded, high, or Indian, maybe all three, to take the bait. I know a woman who fell for one and got completely ripped off without ever meeting whoever was behind it. She was basically the ideal target for that kind of thing though.
If you've ever watched the catfish stuff up on YT it's eye opening as to the sort of person taken in by these things. On a certain level you feel kind of bad for them but it's outweighed by frustration. These people want to be lied to because the lie is comforting/fun/whatever and it's more a willing retardation like really wanting to believe that faith healer can actually cure your cancer than because it's impossible to tell you're being lead on. You can't help but feel it's a sort of willing roleplay. There's a mental block they actively don't want removed. Kind of crazy.

I've heard stories/rumors of there being retirement communities full of swingers and stuff like that, so I guess this is possible, but I'm still going to go on a limb here and say that I think this is all head-cannon. I think this dude is fantasizing about his neighbors and acquaintances and they don't even know it.

That's the thing: Functional polyamory IS superior, when it works. It's for aged hippies who've fucked themselves so stupid on drugs that sex is no longer romantic to them. They marry someone and then sleep around in their retirement cause they got nothing else to do.
I think you’ve uncovered the distance between what’s functional and what isn’t, but I would fine tune the vocabulary a little: I hear the former describe themselves as swingers or having an open relationship, meaning they just have sex with other people. Poly people think they somehow have the supernatural ability to have fully blown, healthy, developed romantic relationships with multiple people.
A "comet relationship" is a relationship that is only intermittently realized. It can be something like "we only hang out on weekends" all the way down to "we only date 3 days a year, if we both happen to go to FaggotCon '25". It's pure retardation but makes sense from a poly standpoint.
It's like a friend with benefits that you only hook up with every few months or so (In this case it's brunch) but because of how superior these people are at the interpersonal, it counts as a full relationship. Basically, the idea that seeing your aunt once a year on Christmas is the same as living with her. Most of these aren't even long distance, which has been seen as valid and equal to real dating by these people for so long that there isn't a baseline for what counts as a partner
