racing games - no not racist games you fucking ni

GT7's May update brings Volvo back to the series, which apparently throws out the "Chinese auto makers embargo on Japanese games" assumed reasoning as to why Lotus hasn't been in the game since GT Sport:

The rest of the update, save for the Mugen NSX that GT fans love to obsess about, sucks.

The latest of EAslop, F1 24, just released with a handling model so atrocious that it practically turns the game into Trackmania. Prime examples below:

Going on the grass to gain time:

Drifting the car in the wet akin to Initial D Arcade Stage:

So much front grip by default that the car can flip:

Full lap of Lusail without using the brakes. Apart from a couple excursions the car could maintain full grip with touring car-like weight transfer. (Farms wouldn't let me upload video file, I'm linking to the xeet directly instead)

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown now has a release date (assuming that it doesn't get pushed back, AGAIN), September 12:

I don't like how racing games are trying to emphasize stuff like "story", when all you do is drive cars.

Some preview and first impression videos about the game are up as well, although it's not all good:

Apparently, the game will be on the grindy side, as in really grindy, as someone needed to grind for 200 hours, just to get one Bugatti. And while people give a lot of shit about Forza games giving out cars like candy, KT decided to go full "HOLD MY KEYS" and make the grind longer than Gran Turismo games. (Aside from the Invite Cars in GT7, which the RNG can make you wait even longer)

And in usual video game fashion, there will be more expensive versions with the usual bonuses such as cars, player cosmetics, and early access:

There is also apparently 2 Silver versions, one for Streets, and another for Sharps, which are the two "factions" of the game. The gold edition has both faction bonus content.

The game's graphics looking like 1 or 2 generations outdated, a Battle Pass in a racing game, Always-Online, and Hong Kong in the game not feeling like Hong Kong, does not bode well for the game, and it makes you wonder what the devs were doing, since the game got delayed 3 times so far.

Every single car in the video is left-hand drive despite Hong Kong being a right-hand drive country:

Hong Kong also apparently has a very diverse population:

Some other things I noticed in those preview videos, is that the shadows look muddy and are sometimes nonexistent (?), the reflections on cars look muddy too, there's no customizable license plates, and the rear-view mirrors have super low-res textures and appear to have SINGLE-DIGIT FPS! And yet somehow, TDUSC managed to include mirrors, even if they look awful, while The Crew games STILL don't have them!

And TDUSC will include an estimated 100 or so cars, which is VERY LOW for a 2024 racing game, when even Gran Turismo 1 on PS1 (albeit, the number is padded due to individual car trims counting as a separate car) included more cars than that.

KT released a free Demo Version of TDUSC, which is available for play until June 17.

The demo is ~44 GB in size, and here's the available features in the demo. Progress in the demo will NOT carry over to the main game:

1717725038462.png 1717725078133.png

People have reported that the demo version is VERY unoptimized (as in Nvidia 30 series graphics cards struggle to maintain 60 FPS), wheel support is spotty at best, the chase cam feels as stiff as Gran Turismo's, the driver cam can only be rotated in 45 degree angles, the only exterior customization is liveries and wheels, (there's no body mods or spoilers, and I'm not sure how detailed the Livery Editor is, and if you can even share Liveries with other players) and the game is VERY stingy with race payouts, compared to the car costs. (i.e. a 2-3 minute race gives 20k, but the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo costs 1.4 million, and I don't want to imagine how much Bugattis will cost, given the "200 hours of grinding needed" to get one.)

And get fucked console players, as the game will require PS Plus to play the game for Soynys, and presumably the same for XBone players:

Probably 26 million HKD (3.3 million USD/165 races/8 hours of gameplay) as that's the MSRP of a Bugatti Chrion.

1.4 million HKD is ~180k USD (70 races/3.5 hours), which is the around the real world MSRP of the Porsche. Clearly the devs feel, just like Kaz, that ingame cars should cost the same as real world cars despite it making for terrible gameplay.

TDUSC's graphics being this bad, leads to these examples of nightmare fuel:

1717811119255.png

And the traffic AI makes GT7's AI look competent in comparison:

Is this an accurate representation of HK taxi cab drivers?:

And the game being a 1:1 representation of Hong Kong Island was a lie, as the map shows at the start of the game:

The 1:1 Hong Kong mention in the game's description seems to have been removed too.

There have been reports that the multiplayer servers for the NASCAR Games from Motorsports Games (Heat+, 21 Ignition) appear to be down, but I'm not sure if this is just downtime, or they were shut down completely. It may actually be the latter, since Motorsports Games has been in financial trouble for a while, they lost the exclusive licenses for NASCAR (and iRacing now has the license for it), and NASCAR 21 Ignition was considered to be the one of the worst racing games to be ever made:

That means that Forza Motorsport 7, which was delisted in 2021, is the only modern console game where you can race NASCAR cars online:

I've heard of NASCAR multiplayer through videos of people trolling races by crashing.

Is it true that the demographic for those games are Southern people?

I don't have any older consoles, but sure. Racing games aren't my choice of genre (I can't drive well.) Tell me this, how does slowing down BEFORE a turn help when driving?
Here's an attempt at an answer nearly a year late. I'm a brainlet at physics and this is probably completely wrong.

I think it comes down to that when you're accelerating your car is going to be pushing forward with more force, making the turn more rigid - the "forward" of accelerating is fighting your turning motion - and ultimately causing you to have to swoop around in a larger arc. Decelerating (not necessarily braking, just letting off the gas) means the turn can be tighter, so you spend less time swooping around, and then you floor the gas. Economy of motion, kind of? You're trying to avoid wasting time making larger motions than necessary or going slower (as if you hugged the in side) than necessary.

I just know that when I started doing that in racing games I got a lot better. At the same time, I found that drifting around a turn but then flooring the gas could also "straighten" my car out as the turn concludes, which was very useful.

Combination of two separate effects
One: Weight transfer
Accelerating transfers the load of the car to the rear, reducing the load on the front wheels, meaning the front wheels have less traction, meaning that you will have a harder time turning (understeer)
Two: Traction limits
The rubber of the tires can only do so much, and lateral and longitudinal forces can exceed what the tire is capable of. If you're trying to turn while carrying too much speed, you might exceed what the tires are capable of and start sliding (oversteer)

If you enter a corner with too much speed and turn while braking, the braking transfers the weight of the car to the front, meaning that the front wheels have too much traction (too much turning response) while the rear wheels have little traction, meaning that you can get braking oversteer and even spin out

I just wanted to share this. You kind of expect TASs to be insane, GX ones especially, but Jesus Christ.
Worst track in the game, for those who haven't played it.
