Containment Random Thoughts & Questions

It'd be interesting to see what it would be like if Chris was a real fan of Mario like he is with sanic. He'd whine about minute changes to Mario's appearance over time, the comics would be different, and you'd see Mario stuff all over his room instead. As a kid, he would've held up a mario plushie in apparent defiance in photos with a guy in a hedgehog costume.

Then again, Mario isn't a talking animal like the blue hedgehog or the American Rabbit, so I don't think it has ever been possible for Mario to be that kind of status with Chris.

Chris does seem to have played some Mario (at least in the past) though. That famous tower pic has the TV on the star menu for "Wet Dry World" in SM64 (which is also evidence that Chris just likes to leave electronics on and running all the time), and the CWCKi mentions Mario games in the list of games Chris has copies of.

Nowadays though, he seems to consider Mario a rival, in his typical style of "brand loyalty," at least according to one FB post made about a "catchprase spewing plumber" or something like that.

I don't think there's any doubt that Chris has played Mario in his life. Anyone with a Nintendo console most likely had. The homemade Nintendo Power issue featured Mario prominently, hell Chris wanted to have a game that's exactly like Super Mario 64 except you play as Sonic and Tails.
And yeah, Mario does not have that kind of cool appeal, it may have simple, colorful and memorable characters and levels but it never wanted to be edgy.
Speaking of the Nintendo Power issue, it's just amazing. Chris apparently never even got to understand how consoles and their exclusives work. Such project may have been cute if he was 8, but he was twice the age so he should've known better that it's not possible for Sonic to be on Game Boy (at least not in the age when Sega consoles were still a thing). And then he wanted to have his dream project of a Sonichu video game - even if it was somehow approved and allowed to be, I sincerely doubt a game featuring Nintendo assets would ever come out on a Sony console.
Then again, one of his comics implies that he thinks it's possible to play LBP on Wii or 360, it's just that it's illegal.

After reading Null's troll subforum essay, I wonder once again: Is CWC somehow physically incapable of learning not to trust people on the intarwebz? I mean, he has gotten trolled how often? 20, 30, 50 times? Even JustinRPG has learned not to react to trolling, and he's far lower functioning than CWC.

Well he is suspicious. But as you say, people do convince him.

I think it is wish fulfillment as much as anything. He really wants supporters and people to talk to, and he isn't capable of finding them IRL. Where does a horribly socially awkward guy in is early 30's meet friends in rural Virginia? But the internet has all kinds of people who want to talk to him. Sure most of them are trolls, but he thinks it is possible a few of them aren't. And it would be great if he could find those few, so he gives it a shot, even if it puts him at risk of further trolling.

(The best answer to where he could meet friends is find a job, but he hasn't been willing to stoop that low yet.)

I dunno, Mario levels can be really difficult. There's a joke on the internets that to win in sanic, all you need to do is "hold right."

I forgot about that home made magazine. When he made that magazine, it must've been a relatively happy time for him. He was in high school, he had somewhat of a social life, and he was thinking about vidya. A lot. And no "dang dirty trolls" or a wiki watching his every move. The house wasn't filled with barbage. No constant "JULAY" calls. Bob and Patti were still around. The spaghetti incident where Barb ragequit from cooking because Chris and Bob weren't hungry may not have happened yet. Barb probably was mentally (not to mention physically) far more healthy. No wonder he wants to go back to that time so badly.

Well, I meant more the art direction than the game part of it. My thumbs know how challenging Mario can be.
And yep, he was also "naive about dating". If he never got into a love quest, he could have avoided so much stress in his life.

About the Home Made Magazine thing, I would like to know where it started.
I don't know how common this would be in the states but my Year 4 teacher in school gave us a assignment to make a Magasine about any subject an the year above an the year below would mark it as part of English comprehension. It was fun an heartbreaking at the same time, but I can see how if Chris started it in that way he would carry it on.

I think it's just a thing that children do sometimes. When I was a kid I remember making stuff like that, although not quite with the same level of dedication as Chris did it.

That is indeed a fair point, but I would like to know if Chris ever got any scholastic recognition for it. Again I don't know about the US but when I was in Primary School I was encouraged to write an draw outside of class and if you showed a interest it was nurtured for a bit, That kept me writing to this day, ok it's only for fun and i don't publish stuff but I like writing, in year 8 we had to study Romeo an Juliet an seeing as the DiCaprio film was big at the time we where told to put in the teachers word "Our own spin on it" So being the 40K sperg I am I wrote it as two 40K Hive world families, with a really 12 year old dark edgy ending. You know thinking back now that's something I might want to revisit. But if This was a school project I can see why a English teacher would have asked Chris to continue with it in a hope to encourage him to grow out of his bubble especially in the 90's an early 00's rather than attempt to refocus him.

Yes, agree. There's this thing with Chris and employment... for some reason, he always does his very best to make himself unemployable. In his highschool senior phase, even some time into the lovequest saga, he could probably have found some kind of job. But look at him now. Creepy, socially inept pseudo-transgender. Nobody forced him to turn himself into this mascara-covered Cosmic Horror. Instead of investing all his energy into tomgirling it up, he could have tried becoming a semi-functional adult. But of course no. One could say he chose to live like a crazy old lady instead, but with Chris I'm not at all sure that "chose" is the correct term. I sometimes feel that he's more like water that follows the downward slope of the terrain by its very nature (as classical philosophy would have put it, insert "passive gravitational mass" here for a more modern feel).

Speaking of the magazine, in the real NP, I noticed that NP editors would post a reply after each letter. But after Chris' letter about Sprung? They seem to be speechless.
Probably at least in part due to Chris writing to a magazine with a significant portion of its' readers being underaged about being a "frustrated virgin."

When I was a kid I also made magazines, but also wrote stories and filled up sketchbooks. Most creatively inclined children do. Those youthful projects were fun and filled my days, but ultimately ended up in a dark corner, as they should have been.

Here is the problem though, andvim surevthis has been said a million million times, and not only with chris: there seems to be a pervading belief that all that is created needs to be shared, that regardless of quality it is worth praise. Some indeed are, but some things fulfil their purpose just in the fun and practice of creation, and really don't need to be shown at all.

I had a subscription to NP from around 2001 until it ceased publication, and I can honestly say that Chris' letter is one of the few that stuck with me just because of how bizarre it was. I didn't even know that it was him until about two months after I discovered him on ED.

ok this is totally random and idk if belongs here but what do you think would happen if chris accidentally knocked up his girlfriend and also what would you think barb would say and think about this?

I think that his girlfriend would not to want keep it and he would and would make a huge fuss over it and I think barb would think it's a bad idea and if this is stupid I understand I know this idea is way out there but it's just a thought

He'd start practicing basic hygiene, get a job, move out of his mothers and begin taking classes on how to function like a human being in society.

Granted that's completely unrealistic, but so is believing that his current heartsweet is genuine and not a troll and that she'd ever have sex with him.

Does Chris still think that Sonichu was an ultimately worthwhile franchise that got derailed by trolls or is he aware that his venture was doomed from the very start and most of the perceived value of his 'franchise' stems from the camp/kitsch/So Bad It's Good factor? Moreover, how has his success in commissioning Sonichu merchandise altered his views towards his magnum opus?
