Containment Random Thoughts & Questions

“The rod” referred to a guiding tool used by shepherds, not something for hitting. The rod and the staff of the Bible were used to gently prod sheep in the right direction and scoop them out of situations.

“People used to hit their kids.” People used to be more violent in general. Civilized people are less violent and doing better than our primitive ancestors. There are other ways to deal with a kid’s bad behavior before going nuclear. Taking away privileges, timeouts, removing the kid from whatever situation is setting them off or stimulating their misbehavior. But that’s getting a bit off topic, even for this thread.
I agree, I have always despised corporal punishment and I’m shocked it wasn’t until the beginning of the 1980s it was banned from schools In most of the western world. I get it, children can be unbelievable shits to each other and authority, but hitting them won’t solve anything, In fact it’ll just encourage further physical abuse if they are a bullying aggressive type, they’ll see it as a right and justifiable thing if respected members of staff are allowed to do it. It’s a vicious cycle that I’m glad has been removed from society for the most part.

Now I am not against sever punishments, I personally think there are definitely times were being unpleasant towards a student is necessary for frequent offenses. But it’s like huge detentions and the best, punishing the whole class for one students screw up. Makes them unpopular and feel guilty too; Chris could definitely have used something like that it’s would have made him feel actual shame which is what he needed growing up.

Collective punishment is against Article 3 of the Geneva convention.

Sometimes, unfortunately, people need to get smacked around, or even have the shit beat out of them, because absolutely nothing else will get through to them.

In the case of someone like Chris, he lacks the executive functions to control his impulses on a rational level. There is no delay of gratification for a better outcome, and no anticipation of future consequences that can override his impulsivity for immediate reward. All humans are like this to some degree, but Chris is an extreme example.

Physical pain bypasses all of this and works on a more fundamental level. You don't avoid pain on a conscious level, it's operates on a more primitive learned behavior that even rather simple animals are capable of. It works because it's part of the same circuitry as the simple reward mechanism that drives people like Chris. This is also why you can train snails.

EDIT: There are drugs that can inhibit the reward mechanism to control impulsivity, but they have the side effect of making you rather miserable.

According to the Cwcki he is transferred back to Central Virginia Regional Jail, I really wonder what happened, you reckon he was in some kind of hospital for his mental issues or for physical issues?
My theory is that Chris had a tardrage episode in jail and got sent to a mental hospital because he was a danger to himself. Once he was able to get evaluated they determined what type of meds to give him and then sent him back to jail.

Would antipsychotics fall into this category?

Yes. Especially the old school ones. Newer ones are probably more favorable due to less side effects but they share the anti-dopaminergic effects.
Has Chris ever been on them before? I know he's been on a couple antidepressants in the past, but I can't find anything about him being on antipsychotics at any point in his life before the jail saga.

So there's a real chance he might come out of jail as a far lazier and less-animated potato than he already was going in?
Depending on the medication and the dosage, possibly. But we have no idea what he's on. If they have him on Thorazine or Haldol, he's going to be fucking fried. I've seen people on that shit, and the side effects are fucking whacked.

Did Bob really want another kid? Would he have been fine with Barb getting an abortion? Many old school republicans supported abortion rights (and still do) that wasn't an issue beyond catholics until the late 70s. I think she wanted another kid more than Bob. Did they not take any precautions thinking they were too old to spawn again?

Since when is corporal punishment actually a valid way to educate peple?
Only recently it was considered a bad thing to do.
IIRC I read somewhere that that crap wasn't too prevalent until after agriculture was invented.

Anyway the real way the Life of Fail could've been avoided is if Borb didn't insist on "mainstreaming", rather than beating.

Does Chris still shit himself? I can’t imagine that they’d let you regularly change your pants in jail. Has he mentioned anything about this in any of his letters?
great question. hes within 3 feet of a toilet at all times and has no toys or video games to distract him or take priority over his bowels evacuating so id like to think he shits himself less frequently

When Chris returned to jail, would he have had to start from scratch with just a Bible and buy all new stuff from the commissary or will the jail have stored stuff like his prayer rugs and diary?
