if I had to read this with my own two eyes, so do all of you

I can't find the post, but I swear to god I remember seeing someone getting pissy about making "gullible on the ceiling" jokes, because apparently that was mocking those who were trusting, like the developmentally disabled. I'm not making this shit up. I saw the post over a year ago, and I still remember it.

I think I remember that too.

Really they were just salty that they were being made fun of.

Tumblr sperging over a character from a play they've never seen who does nothing but goes crazy and dies.

This is the Spider-Gwen bs all over again.

Tumblr actually has a huge hard-on for Hamlet, because of the ~deep emo prince who's prolly gay with everyone uwu~ vibes. There are at least ten posts floating around of girls creaming themselves at the thought of Laertes and Hamlet dueling with their swords (if you know what I mean :tomgirl:).

Uhhh....
They've read Hamlet right?
Ophelia is literally one of the most regressive female stereotypes you can possible imagine, existing largely just to depict what a bastard everyone else is. She's a naive, lovestruck, obsessive child with no goals or motivations outside of being with the prince, her character is defined by her relationships with her father, brother, and potential lover, and she then goes mad and kills herself (or dies accidentally, depending on how you want to read it) in grief over the above.
So you have a woman who dies tragically after having her life revolve around the goals and aspirations of men. And that's rather the point, because the entire play is about manipulation and the consequences of a lust for revenge at all costs.

Progressive!

You're optimistic to think that Tumblrinas accept Hamlet 'canon' so to speak.

They imagine Ophelia is this deep, broken doll who was once strong before she was ruined by her obsession with Hamlet and that making her out to be some lort of hyper spiritual mentally ill waifu, a symbol for.... Something. Is much better.
If that movie's coming out, you can bet it'll either be a pandering shitfest going along with bullshit theories and reinterpretations seen on Tumblr a thousand times before... or an actually interesting reinterpretation of the character. It depends on how much of a Strong Female Character trope they're gonna make her.

I think the fact David Tennant played Hamlet got a lot of them into it.
At least that was the case with me as a 16 year old tumblrette.

It's times like this I'm thankful the American Public Education system failed me so spectacularly that the only Shakespeare plays I know anything about are Julius Caesar and Titus Andronicus. You ever seen that movie version they did of the latter with Anthony Hopkins? it's an absolute fucking acid trip.

...that being said, I'm wondering how this group of Tumblrites will overlap with the other group currently lamenting that the dude who wrote Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (aka that fanfiction-esque slop that has had the fandom begging Rowling to quit while she was ahead and she just floored the accelerator instead) now being in charge of the Star Wars 9 rewrite. Since Daisy Ridley's been cast as Ophelia, there's gotta be a lot of overlap there between the theater spergs, the HP spergs, and the Star Wars spergs, and I'm really hoping for a nice little inter-fandom slapfight/meltdown.

I didn't know tbh. The person I got that post from actually commented in the tags that they've never read Hamlet but they're still interested in watching this. A normie tainted by tumblr, basically.

Exactly. If they wanted some strong female characters from Shakespeare to focus a film on there's a big repertoire- Lady Macbeth, Beatrice, Portia, Rosalind, even Katherine if they wanna reinvent The Taming of the Shrew.

But no, they cream their panties over a character that just goes crazy and cries. Tumblrettes sure pick weird female characters to be their feminist role models.

I can tell this is bullshit because what high school, in this century, has a German class?
Maybe, but I can't imagine a high school's curriculum that involves snake dissection. Snakes are very specialized organisms with myraid adaptations (they have only one lung, for instance); their anatomy cannot be generalized to other reptiles and vertebrates.

But mental illnesses are so romantic! Ophelia in her madness sees people as they really are, free from the masks of conceit! (I guess I can't entirely blame Tumblr; the romanticization of mental illness is an idea that dies hard)

My guess is that they'll make her a Cassandra archetype who is smarter than all the men but you know, patriarchy.

For people who scream "ABUsE!11111!!!!!!!!!" at completely minor and unimportant things, they sure act pretty abusive and manipulative.

edit: Saying "but I AM the victim" is one of the most important tactics used by abusers, so as to make their victims feel too guilty to leave them or disobey in any manner - sounds weirdly familiar, doesn't it?
