I will admit her portraits aren't too bad (the bottom left one kinda has that weird fish mouth however). But whenever she draws portraits, it always seems to be of herself. Very few of her portraits, from what I've seen, are actually of other people. I know in art class they tend to make you do self portraits but never to this extent. Does she really just like drawing herself that much?

Those look like she traced over selfies. The change in style to super realism is too drastic otherwise.

Actually, she seems to have a pretty decent grasp on realism? This is one of the older pieces in her art tumblr, and it was done with oil painting

Honestly, I think that makes it funnier.
She clearly has actual talent, so it's not a lack of potential skill so much as it is that she actively chooses to draw like that. Like, she has the ability to do something interesting or unique, and instead made the deliberate choice to draw in her trademark "steven universe, but somehow worse" style.
Calarts will suit her nicely. It's a great school to attend if you're looking to sandblast anything remotely original or visionary off of your art and reduce it down to that very marketable pastel nightmare style that animation studios like to much lately.
Enjoy that 80k of student debt for a fucking art school to teach you Toon Boom, kiddo, and remember that cheap ramen tastes way better if you use actual chicken stock and veggies in place of the flavor packet.

The Calarts guy earlier in the thread mentioned that she's often always alone at lunch when eating and is never seen at any social gatherings. I'd wager that it's only about 50% egotism and the other 50% being that she doesn't really have anyone else to draw because no one seems to hang out with her. From my experience as a (terrible) artfag, people with any modicum of common sense won't ask you to draw them unless they know you personally (or if they're really obnoxious people). Like, the only time I got someone I didn't know to draw me was when we got a retired Disney animator to do a lecture in one of my classes and he asked for volunteers to draw.

That said, her digital portraits are actually halfway decent. The one with her and the cat is actually really, really good in my opinion. I wonder if she could still do pictures like these, they're from like three years ago now.

I said in the SJW Art thread in CW, I'm not sure whether to be impressed or frustrated that, despite being the subject of ridicule and outright vitriol from other artists and the people she tries to pander to, she gives absolutely zero fucks whatsoever and continues on with what she does without a care in the world.

Like, she's getting eviscerated on Twitter over her drawings of John Boyega by people of all stripes, and she has zero self-awareness from what I can see and going on as if everything is okay. It's like she's got an ego made of steel.

Although you could argue the only time she ever gave any was when the initial blowback happened with her "trans" Steve Rogers and she flounced for a short while.

If I remember right, a lot of art schools are obsessively anti-anime even in their animation programs. I don't think her artstyle looked THAT anime beforehand but its possible that being in that environment she failed to pick up the innuendo behind their anti-anime message, that being that being able to draw anime is FINE but you need to be able to draw other things too. It's the nature of the industry, your style has to be diverse to accommodate whatever show you're working on and typically it helps to just know the ins and outs of how art works to begin with. Instead she probably picked up on it the same way that most Tumblr artists do: purge anything animu in your style, even if that means absolutely fucking anatomy up the ass.

sometimes i felt rory was being lazy w their recent work online because they're busy w school but still wanted to have an online presence to keep their followers happy. which is understandable as your attention is focused on well i dunno CHALLENGING yourself w a prestigious art school and all that entails. i've seen multiple artists do that but they always joke around with the doodles knowing it's simple and they're being distracted by work/school/kids/etc.

doodles are a fun stress reliever (i do it all the time) but when you're swanning about as if you are the shit and hiding the fact you are a racist, transphobic bigot when posting these works show's how much of a poor artist they are.

AAAAAANNNND this excuse doesn't work for rory either when seeing their classmates shorts side by side. rory's work lacks the same fluidity, color, humor, placement and originality. it lacks any effort.

Yeah, that's a thing. It's such a big thing, even if your style has a single thing in common with anime, your teachers and more snob peers will start looking down on you.

With this in mind, their style sorta make sense. Small eyes with big nose and giant mouth? Sounds like the anti-anime, if I do say so myself.
