Am I the only one who finds it hard to read this character? She's such a bundle of orange blocks that I can't read her body language unless it's super telegraphed like flexing her arms in triumph because those giant cheeto puffs are 49% of her each. It's the same with her face, everything is so simplified that I have to autistically calculate the brow angles and scene context just to work out "Strawberry is frowning right now" while the big yet nonexistent nose just gets in the way.

Even if they didn't want to use a real life female wrestler as reference for whatever bullshit reason, there are some muscular female characters that they could have taken inspiration from (Rainbow Mika, Zarya, Sakura Oogami and She-Hulk come to mind), and would have looked at least slightly more appealing than this shapeless blob who skipped leg day. Even Jasper, the character who was clearly the biggest inspiration for Strawberry's design, at least has some thick legs to balance out her body shape. Mixing a broad upper body with a skinny lower body without it looking disturbing takes a lot of skill, and Rory clearly lacks it.

In retrospect, I miss the "terrible caricatures of Disney characters" RCDart. Her MCU art was awful, yes, but at least it was entertaining. Her recent stuff is just so forgettable, Strawberry has a simple, bland, childish design, and she does simple, bland, childish things.

It's all so boring, which is strange, because Rory used to be one of the most entertaining Lolcows to come from tumblr, now she doesn't even use that website. She's lost almost everything over the course of this thread, including the stuff that made her intresting.

It was pretty anticlimactic for me. Nothing about it seems outstanding or awful. It just looks like what all the art she made about it before was promoting. So maybe her style's stagnated and won't continue on a rapid downward spiral like before now that she's largely offline?

:powerlevel: I'm extremely hard of hearing so I can't actually tell if it's unpleasant to watch thanks to the soundtrack or something. The credits include voice acting. I've got to admit, I'm dying of curiosity. Who saw Strawberry's design and thought, I have to voice this? What kind of dialogue would fit with a short with this kind of tone and pacing? Holding out for someone with working ears to enlighten me about what happened here.

As a 2nd year animator myself, this film makes me suddenly feel 110% better about my own work lmao jesus. How long did it take them to make it?? It looks like they just skipped cleanup and have never used a colour pallet in their life.

The movement (when there is any) is so bad, there's no feeling to anything. Like at the beginning you can't even tell what shes doing in the ring. It shows a very clear lack of skill in my opinion, like there are so many angles you could do those shots from to make that opening more exciting but its just poorly staged, every character in the centre of the frame bland shit. You feel nothing for that character as there IS no character. They might as well have just been a brick with a wig on. I felt more for the old dude than her lmao at least his design was slightly aesthetically pleasing. Also the voice acting and the lip sync is shit. Nothing pisses me off more than shit lip sync and I've seen 2 CalArts films now in the space of a week with shit lip sync. STEP YOUR GAME UP CALARTS, COME ON NOW.

I wanna direct y'all to a second year film from my course a few years ago. There's not a lot of animation but at least the characters are ACTUAL characters.

Like im sure everyone whos every animated knows how long it takes to get work done etc, but we have like 4 months to make a film in second year here and most people come out with something nice. We have a huge emphasis on film making and film festivals so the "standard" we are held to is "make a film and submit to as many festivals as you can"cause that will be how you get your name out there. CalArts has a huge reputation, even here in the UK we hear about how amazing CalArts is- this is shocking, my first year film looked better than this turd.

So are we supposed to be rooting for Not-Japser? Because if that was the case opening with her fighting someone who is clearly way under her weight class, followed by establishing that her only interest in Mr. Monopoly being his money, then followed with accepting tons of gifts in the form of jewels and exotic pets, and then ending with her running off with a bunch of luxury items even though there's no evidence that the guy she married did anything wrong (if he was supposed to be the bad guy, would including a quick scene showing him encouraging her to retire or keeping her away from wrestling have really killed Rory) and deciding to be homeless was the exact wrong way to go about that.

This has been said a thousand times already, but this is terrible for a second year project. You'd expect something of this quality to be what a teenager does as a hobby.

That scene where Strawberry tackles the other wrestler into the ground is so smooth(looks like they fell in a straight line, not what tackling looks like , and when they fall, it's like they fell into a void. I can't watch it with audio right now so maybe sound effects cover that, but there should still be a visual representation of them hitting the ground. The animation is so choppy, you'd expect there to be some extra details to compensate.
Also, the shot where she pulls the girl's hair: It looks like she ripped her head off.

Honestly, while I miss the days of ripping on her shitty attitude and her shitty artwork, I'm really glad that she finally got hoisted by her own petard, and it actually stuck this time.

I think the infamous Kylo Fishface and Microcephaly*Finn drawing was what finally broke her. At least with the Trans*Cap and lumpy Bravest Warriors In Name Only art, she could still deflect criticism hurled at her and use her minority status(es) as a shield. But once Kylo Fishface entered the mainstream and her art -and not long after, her MCU fan art past- was exposed to a much wider -and far less forgiving- audience; coupled with the backdraft from her Finn drawing... it was just too much for her to handle.

As obnoxious and detestable as Rory is, I honestly believe she's made the right choice going as much off the grid as possible. Sure, it deprives us of lulz, but it means she's finally learned some humility, then maybe it's not so bad of a trade. I mean, if Snapesnogger could make a comeback as OwlyGem, then I don't see why Rory can't do similar.

I feel Twitter was less forgiving because their artists don’t do Rorysm, they tend to draw in more appealing and adorable styles. Rory’s style is the evolution of a tumblr exclusive trend where making everyone trans, gay, fat, not white, hairy, ugly and grotesque is “good diversity”.
Had they stayed in tumblr, the backlash would be more bearable than what Twitter brought.

As for coming back, OwlyGem has the advantage her real life identity wasn’t spread across the net. Rory Cummings achieved meme status among art communities due to her arrogance and association with Calarts.
In other words, Rory’s reputation is fucked and I have no idea how she’s gonna get out of this one lol.
