i am not really surprised that a lot of transtrender artists are fetishists.

All the hardcore yaoi/slash fans I've met online and IRL have been completely batshit. Dysfunctional home life, inability to form meaningful relationships with people, lied constantly, ego issues etc. This makes a lot more sense now realizing that they've moved on to fetishizing trans men as a way to mask their shitty personalities under faux progressivism.

Yaoi functioned as this safe space where it was OK for young women to be into pornography, but it still enabled them to make shitty toxic judgements about other people who didn't 'get it'. It was a secret club where they could crow about how much better they are for liking something pure and clean like gorgeous sparkly anime boys instead of actual gross penises. Apparently we're not progressive enough to understand tube waists and pepperoni nipples.

I'm gonna second what averagejane said. Here are some observations.

One thing tumblr lesbians share with yaoi fan girls is that real boys are too "scary". Fictional boys can't hurt your feelings -- and most tumblr lesbians are into either fictional girls, or are "dating" another tumblr user. This shields their real-life feelings from getting hurt.

Calling yourself a lesbian also signals that you're not an icky cishet. Being straight isn't cool -- which is why normal straight people, exposed to tumblr, start calling themselves "demisexual" ("I don't fuck on the first date"). So "some girls are pretty" morphs into "I'm a lesbian!" Calling yourself a lesbian also means tumblr culture will give you a pass on being mean to men.

A lot of these people are very young, too. So there's increased social pressure to be cool and not attract negative attention from their tumblr peers.

I never interacted with a lot of tumblr lesbians, so I can't tell you very much about their ways and culture. The only one I ever talked to was a slash fan and claimed to have multiple personalities...so pretty typical for tumblr.
