Depends on the context. They can be in literature and serious publications, because a double hyphen is a kick in the eyes and not a substitute. It's also pretty common to see in some forums online with pretentious people that mastered remembering its ALT code (0151) and want to show off. But it's something LLMs picked up and abuse (even if sometimes it's better at punctuation than most people), and is an obvious hint a post may not be written by a real person in part or full.Also, are em-dashes (—) common to write?
Nobody writes this shit seriously outside school to pad their assignments. But those models really like to spew that gibberish.The point of sharing this is to highlight how actions that might seem harmless or funny to some can leave others feeling exposed, embarrassed, and fearful—especially young women who are just trying to go about their day.
