The thing with Europe is, there is no real opposition in terms of media. Well, maybe that's not true in 100% of cases, but generally my impression of Europe is that it is ideologically very homogenous. Some countries have government-financed TV (although they don't call it that) which most people think of as "reputable and independent" (ironic), similar to how liberal Americans might perceive CNN. But there's no equivalent to Fox, so the mainsream debate is very very one-sided, which creates the appearance of peace. There is little conflict because one side of the debate has basically an absolute monopoly. There is no "counterweight" to balance out and reveal the lies and shortcomings of the established media, because the established media is all there is. In America you have both sides pointing out each other's bullshit, which is rather healthy imo, but also creates more outward conflict, creating a less civilized appearance of sorts.

Then on Axios, another high ranking CPC member Cui Tiankai was interviewed. He is the Chinese ambassador, which represents the state unlike Zhao. The interviewer pressed on Zhao's implications, Cui responded with "he is accountable for what he says and I don't need to disavow", effectively using an individualist argument when he belongs to a unitary party called the "United Front". The United Front is a composition of 8 Chinese parties, some are leftist progressive, some nationalist, current leader is the CPC which is nationalist. Basically, it's a collectivist party with an ideology based on collectivism (Chinese style Socialism, Xi Jinping thought). Quite interesting.
