Regarding the apparent and imminent repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and the future of this website.

Now where will I make libelous claims and direct harassment at people I dont like?

The lolcow farms are the problem, the free speech a&h, deep thoughts, etc are the parts of the site with some value, even though the shit lolcow moderators ruin that a bit.

There's nothing noble about doxing and harassing people. Boohoo I might be liable for the damage I purposely inflict!

Lol you don't even know what section 230 is or does if you think it has anything to do with bad words.

This is the eternal Trump leech ripping off the mask, admitting they only used the website for him, and now want to discard the husk of the website they turned it into.
They're doing the same thing on 4chan right now.
This is shocking news, nobody has said anything about these people before. If only someone had told the administration how inviting them here would fuck everything up

More like "die free instead of maybe living free" if you ask Null. There's no way to know what the future holds. Null has built something that took years and years of hard work and he's formed a community that most site runners would kill for, and he's going to nuke it because of a bump in the road and go be some code gopnik for the rest of his life. If 230 goes, that will unleash a tide of the most white-hot retardation we have ever seen and there is no fucking way that the world is going to tolerate that and let the internet implode. It will get fixed. But as usual, Null is going to take the impulsive emotional route, tell everyone around him to fuck themselves, and destroy his life's work because it's easier than fighting within the system. There are numerous options he could explore before nuking the site, but he's going to take the easy and stupid way out because he's emotional and can't bring himself to compromise even if the potential payoff is better than not compromising. Five years from now Null could be the man who guided a beloved niche of the internet through hellfire with his users at his back or he could be a nameless drone sucking some corporate dick somewhere and he's opening wide instead of rallying the troops. I'm not asking him to do it for me, I am telling him to do it for himself. If I were in his position, I would fight, because he has a chance I will never have and the alternative is a guaranteed loss.

So yeah, "live free or die", but Null interprets that as "kill yourself if there's a chance you can't live free". It's retarded. If he does pull the plug, that's his choice, but he shouldn't make it. He has something worth fighting for and people who would help him and he won't fight. You can try to make his choices out to be freedom fighter alpha male if you want, but he's acting like a lolcow to me.

What you don't seem to understand is that if the uniquely libertarian spirit of a place like this dies, then you have nothing of value. It turns into Reddit, Youtube, a watered down shithole like the thousands of other watered down shitholes that exist on the internet. Nothing of value, and certainly not a place where true diversity of thought can be expressed freely.

People like you who don't understand the concept of liberty of thought are what has brought forth the idea that repealing ss 230 is a good idea in the first place. And because you are willing to compromise, the people who would see true liberty of thought destroyed would win.

If you would want to compromise, then why not go to reddit?

Boohoo I might be liable for the damage I purposely inflict!

That's how the internet works now.
If 230 is repealed, the website owner, aka null would be liable for the damage we inflict. Which would make hosting this thing an absolute nightmare since any shithead could sign up and post anything for the soley reason to bait a lawsuit aimed at null

And everyone using said site would now be potentially hunted by feds looking to break up communities and invoke fear on a daily basis.
Why, though? It's not like the site's facing the threat of criminal actions; we're not selling drugs, sex, or untaxed booze and cigarettes. It's facing the threat of civil actions. I don't think the feds have a "please help the crazy litigious asshole who wants to sue a John Doe for saying something mean about them on the internet and needs to find John Doe's dox" division. It'd take some pretty serious effort to get them to even care.

I appreciate the practical knowledge, by the way. But I don't think the feds would go around shutting down websites for merely existing without some associated legal entity that can be haled into court if a crazy litigious asshole decides to sue it, or even that they'd put much effort or care into doing it if there was a civil judgement. If a plaintiff won and then couldn't figure out how to collect their money, that wouldn't be the feds' problem.

edit: this thread's moving a mile a minute. For context, I should probably reiterate that I'm talking about a hypothetical future scenario where Kiwi Farms is just an onion site and there's no "Joshua Moon" or "Lolcow LLC" that could be sued over its content.

Yes. The civil protections that protect the Kiwifarms protects the Internet Archive.

Anyways, if there is an actual, serious, draft of legislation that would revoke or significantly weaken §230, I hope we'll see the pushback that we saw for SOPA and PIPA way back when. It would probably happen, at least in this scenario. Nuking it would draw the ire of the people who control the masses. A compromise might still be shit, but it wouldn't be the doomsday scenario. Also Trump hasn't fulfilled most of what he's loudly declared he will do anyways, I don't see how much this is any different, considering he is now in lame duck status.
With SOPA and PIPA, the major sites were against it and made that clear. Their silence about this tells me they're in support of the repeal. Or they're retarded. Maybe a bit of both.
