He doesn't have NPD. To the untrained, it's easy to see why the mistake is made. But NPD is extremely rare, with only 100,000 diagnoses per year worldwide. Undiagnosed, it's estimated that 0.2% - 0.4% of the population suffers from it in some fashion. Typically, those afflicted don't go to the doctor for it, it's usually something else that's associated with it; depression, drug/alcohol abuse, etc.
Dave has a strong ego, without a doubt. That's
not a bad thing. Having a strong ego allows someone to weather misfortunes better.
If he has a complex B personality disorder, it's more likely that it would be antisocial personality disorder.
One of the key things that makes think that vs NPD is that Dave had a callous attitude towards Rambo and Howard after he moved. Dave is also aggressive and hostile and has a temper that is easily set off by things most people wouldn't consider worthy of the anger.
And here's the big one:
"Irresponsibility is a core characteristic of this disorder: they can have significant difficulties in maintaining stable employment as well as fulfilling their social and financial obligations, and people with this disorder often lead exploitative, unlawful, or parasitic lifestyles"
But honestly, even that's a stretch.
Dave is just an asshole. By diagnosing him with something you're giving people a reason to feel pity for them, because they have a disorder. It would be, in fact, actually "not his fault". So let's not do that.
But here's my diagnosis:
Dave has an ego. He somehow stumbled into 200,000/year by doing something stupid - recording video games and uploading them. He did this during a crucial part in his life, when he should be networking and building a career. He had a $40,000 job one day, and 5 times that almost overnight.
That lasted several years, years he can never get back. Years he should have been climbing the corporate ladder.
Now, a decade later, he's literally trapped. This is the only thing he can do to make money, and as such he absolutely hates it. If you watch his content over the years, you can easily see it. He hates the people he begs for money. He hates the games. He hates the consoles. He hates that hes lived in Seattle for years and has seen nothing more than the zoo and the space needle.
I don't even live on that coast, but I've seen the mystery vending machine several times. How it got there, who fills it no one knows. It's just always been there since the 80s. That's a cool as hell story, and like 20 minutes from where he is, but yet he's chained to his couch.
His grandiosity is a coping mechanism.
He knows what he is. He hates that he knows. If any of us were in the same situation, you're god damn right we'd try everything we could to make money. Because we'd be fucking scared seeing our lives as we get older, with no retirement, no medical, no soul. Literally possessing zero skills - and plenty of people remind you of that. He's realizing that there's a definitive point that people will just stop watching. Because it's impossible to 'maintain a legacy' in front of the camera unless you're Johnny Carson or Alex Trebek.
He's just an asshole. A scared little boy. He had many ways out, and he refuses to take them. He refuses to adapt. He could learn programming and start doing projects to get his feet wet, transition that way. There's a ton of paths he could follow. But they all involve work, and he's the ultimate slacker.
So fuck him.
You really think Dave, who suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder the actual mental disorder, could handle not coming to the farms to post here with others? I mean, sure I guess Dave could finally have self-control and not make an account here but I doubt it.
