Reviews for Resident Evil 4 VR have been pouring out, and it's been rather positive but some gripes here and there.

The big cons I've seen thus far:
-NO MERCENARIES/ADA CAMPAIGNS. Yep, Seperate Ways and Assignment Ada are not here, alongside Mercenaries; this means no Alt. Costume 2, no Chicago Typewriter and no Handcannon. Big disappointment.
-Cutscenes can be jarring with the border
-Censorship IS present, and it's edited out a bit jarringly too, with static cutting out the "offending" lines.

Other than those three I've heard repeatedly, the rest is all positive. I'll provide my insights into this more in depth once it releases tomorrow since I have the money to spare to give this a whirl. Even if it sucks, I'm still playing RE4 so it shouldn't be TOO disappointing, right?

To the end of my days, I'll never understand how a horror video game series that went from being based on 'good bad' American horror movies to spawning 'bad bad' American horror movies.

I can translate it as "another gimmicky way of playing RE4, except, unlike the Wii version, it sucks and shows the age of this game"

Am I the only that thinks RE4 is highly overrated?

I feel bad about that as obviously the game does have a lot of charm and was very groundbreaking for it's day, but a recent replay honestly did not leave me very impressed.

I loved it as much as everyone else did the first time I played it, but these days I resent the impact it had on the horror general as a whole as well as the Resident Evil series itself afterward, which had all yet to happen in 2005, but I also think it's in many ways a pretty dated game, some games from the 6th gen hold up very well and some simply don't.

I will say though that they absolutely nailed Leon as a character, he looks cool, his quips are funny and cool, that's definitely a big aspect of the game's charm that does hold up.

That's really weird, so Luis says "Looks like they equipped the President's daughter with KRRRRRSSSSHHHH BUZZZZZ KRRRRRRRSSSSZZZZZZZZHHHHHHHH"?

Honestly I had the reversed opinion: I first thought it drifted too far away from it's roots and basically turned the series into a shootfest (Which it did turn into with 5 and 6, even though I still enjoyed the shit out of 5). Later on I realized it for the fun, dumb thing it is now, but I can see why folks might get turned off with the game when they heard how awesome it is, and then get hit with tank controls in 2005.

As for the cut lines, what I mean is for the little codec call things; for dialogue like Ballistics, they just cut to the next line. Weird as hell and a bit jarring.

So it's "SO I SEE THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER WAS EQUIPPED WITH..."

My reaction was the opposite, while I loved the games a lot I had only been playing Resident Evil games for less than 3 years when 4 came out, so it had yet to really build up that nostalgic cache with me, so I was more accepting of it's fun, dumb action and less caring about the lore and the story.

As the years have gone on though and they stopped making games like the classic Resident Evils full stop, I find myself more appreciating what the series used to be, more appreciating of the story and less keen on the action formula.

But I was honestly surprised how much I disliked RE4, I was expecting it to enjoy it more, the last time I replayed the game was in 2014 which was not that long ago and I still enjoyed it pretty good, but what was different is this time I replayed it after replaying REmake, RE0, original RE2, original RE3 and Code Veronica and that was when the contrast between the classic style and RE4 became all the more obvious, plus it sucked getting invested in the series storyline and lore all over again only to have RE4 veer off from what was obviously being built up into what amounts to a side story.

Honestly as much as I enjoyed 4's cheesy ass plot, I do wish it had more connections to the rest of the series instead of Ada showing up and Wesker saying hi in a side campaign. I always wanted to fight something like the Hunters or maybe an imported Tyrant that Saddler bought, anything really to connect to it more.

Shit, even now I don't get people that say "THE PLOT IN THE PAST GAMES WERE STUPID AND I DIDN'T LIKE THEM, RE4 HAD THE BEST PLOT BECAUSE IT WAS SEPERATE FROM ALL THE GARBAGE". Like, the past games had the exact same amount of cheese this one has, only RE4 is a bit more self aware of that. People always seem to think RE4 was the game that made the series silly, but shit like the crossdressing psycho in Code Veronica and literal b-movie action plots in every other game was always there to provide the ridiculous aspect of the game.

It's why I like RE5 so much, it connects back to the series and brings in some cool stuff. Ouroboros is prolly one of my favorite viruses in the series for how weird it is.

It was really dumb, we go game after game setting up some ultimate showdown with Umbrella and 4 just sidesteps that entirely and the showdown we did get was relegated to a rail shooter spinoff, it's just lame.

The games never took themselves TOO seriously, even REmake has Barry's cheesy one liners.

But what's weird is how little 4 connects to it, yes Las Plagas infected enemies are there, but it has nothing to do with Wesker's main plot, Ouroboros is not directly connected to Las Plagas, it also doesn't make sense why Wesker would infect a bunch of random African townspeople and villagers with Las Plagas, near the end of the game he's using Las Plagas infected as a personal army, but why the random people? And why did Wesker care about Las Plagas at all when it has nothing to do with his main world ending scheme?

Ouroboros should have been connected to the main enemies you fight, which if you look at original concept art when the African townspeople were more zombie like, maybe that was the case, but instead we get two entirely different biological threats in one game, it's just kind of weird.

It was cool to see the return of Lickers though and like you said it would have been interesting to fight Lickers or Tyrants in a 4 or 5 styled game.

I wasn't, you documented your multi part nostalgiafag session in the thread pretty well.
The opening village segment of 4 really is a classic, by far the scariest part of the game, at first it was a great trip down memory lane, but the more I played the game and got to the castle and especially the island, the more tedious I found it.

Even most fans admit the island is the weakest part of the game.

By removing "ballistics" line they made Ashley seem bratty and bitchy because now she's antagonistic towards Luis for literally no reason, very stunning and brave.

SJW guys who got angrier about Onlyfans possibly shutting down a few months ago than they ever have been about homelessness/poverty: "I am SO glad that they got rid of sexuality in this video game."

The RE4 VR edit news has brought out the sort of people who were seriously insisting Leon is a pedophile because Ashley Graham was a mere child of 20 years and those sorts of people have a lot of overlap with every cretin who was making a big, showy performance of posting shit like "please Lady Ceaușescu from Resident Evil 8, kick me in the balls/GIANT VAMPIRIC MOMMY GF PLEASE CRUSH MY SKULL MOMMY" etc. etc. and those people have far more chances of being a sex offender than the average guy who thought it was funny when Louis referred to Ashley's "ballistics".

I love RE4 but I will be the first to admit that Capcom shamelessly milks its popularity for all that is worth. It was the entry point for A LOT of people so there is a special place in their hearts, flaws and all.

You know...whats the point exactly? This game is older than a lot of people that are currently alive and is popular as hell with lets play of it everywhere on youtube and etc. This.game.isnt.NEW. ANYONE CAN SEE THE "naughty" DIALOGUE THROUGH OTHER SOURCES! OR EVEN MEMES!

One might ask the stupid question "but its just dumb dialogue from an old game, why you care?". Well, its simple, because thats always how it starts. They always start with shit that would otherwise seem insignificant and thats how they boil the frogs into censoring more and more.

This version is instantly the worst one to me, yes, worse than the OG PC port. At least that one kept the game intact while this doesnt. Fuck me, this pisses me off.
The games never took themselves TOO seriously, even REmake has Barry's cheesy one liners.

They toned down the cheesyness for the most part. Tho they do allude to the original lines, like the Jill Sandwich line is "You would have fit nicely into a sandwich", its like they couldnt resist throwing a wink wink at us...they wont say it but they will fucking allude to it.

Its been a while but I think ouroboros came from Las Plagas, like an improved version of it and the towns people were mostly a distraction I think. Again, its been a while, I cant recall what was Wesker's whole plan.

Even most fans admit the island is the weakest part of the game.

It suffers from Xen Syndrome (aka, the third act of the game is usually the weakest since its the area with the least amount of work from the devs and they really have almost nothing new to throw at you). The game becomes pure action...well, at least until you get to the Regenerators.

So stick with the PS2 version, got it.

Anybody know if the PS4 version is censored as well?

RE4 is the only game I purchased twice. First in Wii then in Steam. I have no real interest in VR, but the news of censorship is sad.

IIRC, the only remotely pervy thing in there was Leon having a look at Ada's things that she shows off before hook shooting away. Other than that, it's just jokes about Annoying Ashley.
