I've never played any of the resident evil games. Are the games more-or-less standalone or should I play the games chronologically?

If they are stand alone stories, what games do you guys recommend?
Chronologically doesn't really work because Zero, despite taking place first, assumes familiarity with the other games to where you'd be pretty lost if you started there.

As for what's readily available, start with REmake, then RE2 Remake and then RE Zero, the top 3 best games in the series imo, if you like them, you can then either track down or emulate the original RE3 and the original RE2 if you're curious, if you just want the broad strokes of the story you can play RE3 Remake, just keep in mind it's missing a lot from the original game.

If you're continuing to like the series, check out Resident Evil Code Veronica, although keeping in mind there's an enhanced HD edition but only on PS3 but I think the PS2 version if available to buy digitally on PS4.

As for RE4 I'd say wait and see how the remake turns out, the original game is pretty dated, if you find yourself getting pretty invested in the series' storyline you may want to play RE5 (and the DLC Lost In Nightmares) because it does have pretty important story info, but keep in mind it's not a great game.

I'd skip RE6 entirely, but definitely check out RE7 and RE8.

There was a downturn after Zero, though the Outbreak games kept some of the old magic alive.

RE4 is maybe the most overrated game of all time, I was honestly surprised how much I was not enjoying it when I replayed it last year, impressive for 2005 but doesn't really hold up.

Especially after 4 there was a big downgrade, but RE2 Remake is the best game since Zero and RE7 and RE8, while yes, first person does change the feel a lot, are still great games, RE8 especially works because while it's first person it's set in a very classically Resident Evil environment.

It was bittersweet beating Zero after another replay last year though, knowing what an end of an era for the series it was.
RE4 is definitely overrated, not quite as badly as stuff like BotW & TLoU2 though.

The remakes and the first-person games, I'm sure they're good for what they are, but they don't have the same feel.

Final Fantasy and Resident Evil used to do spin-offs to test other genres, which is the way it should've stayed. Final Fantasy flipped, now their turn-based games are the spinoffs (at least they do that much); Resident Evil should do some low-budget spin-offs in the classic style.

RE4 should have been a spinoff, much like the Street Fighter EX series or other RE spinoffs like the Gun Survivor games.

A spinoff RE game with more of a focus on action would have been fine if the mainline series stayed focused on horror.

And yeah, I've long wanted them to do a "Mega Man 9" style retro RE game spinoff.

I completely agree. Also, in case they really want something very low risk as well as fast, easy, and cheap to produce, they could go back further than Resident Evil. Instead of making a 5th gen-style retro spin-off, do an 8-bit Resident Evil similar to Capcom's own "Sweet Home" (the inspiration behind Resident Evil).

I could see that being fairly popular and maybe a more feasible project to greenlight. I'd honestly like to see both now that I think about it.

I saw the movie and it was ok at best. It's better than the Alice movies but not by much. I enjoyed the game references (even if they didn't make sense).

I hate how they portrayed Wesker in particular. They massacred my boy. Him being a asshole was likeable idk why they made him a sappy boi with morals and shit.

Also the Wesker/Jill fanfiction made me cringe. Well, almost the whole movie made me cringe but that made me cringe the most.
The origin story that they gave to Wesker's shades made me crack the fuck up.

I'm also convinced 90 percent of the budget went to purchasing rights to the three 90s pop songs they randomly peppered into the movie for reasons unknown.

This is kind of awkward for me, as RE4 and BOTW are two of my all-time favorite video games.

What makes RE4 dated in your eyes?
I don't know about him, but I don't think it's dated so much as just not as good as people often say. In fact, only the later released Wii version is any good, surprisingly. Otherwise the controls were always clunky, slow, and inaccurate, even at release.

The puzzles are an afterthought, the story is a mess, and it's too focused on being action packed. Definitely a mid-tier Resident Evil (but still a good game).

Not sarcastically, but what do you like so much about BotW, it's like 90% wandering an empty world of nothing but the same enemies, items, and the only thing to do being same-y Shrines and mind numbing Korok Seeds.

Well at release, RE4 was pretty much the first of its kind to employ the over-the-shoulder camera angle for third-person action games, along with the aiming style. There's a reason why nearly every other TPS after it has followed in its wake. Plus, the fact that it controls a bit slow is to play into its horror and tension, as the fact that you can't fire while aiming increases the need to time your shots and place your position carefully.

The puzzles I thought were always the weak point when it comes to horror games, believe it or not, so the streamlining of them was not a bother imo. The story is messy, but the reason it still works is because it knows that it is campy, and just fully embraces it. RE has never exactly been the best at doing serious plots, so for this game, they just went all in on the cheesiness, which greatly worked in its advantage (compare that to RE5 and RE6, which do try to take themselves seriously, and as a result, fall well short).

More to the point though, the main reason RE4 works is its pacing. Every moment and setpiece is expertly spaced out and is put in for a specific reason, that it never at all drags in any particular spot, at least in my experience.

What do you like so much about BotW, it's like 90% wandering an empty world of nothing but the same enemies, items, and the only thing to do being same-y Shrines and mind numbing Korok Seeds.
Not to derail this thread too much, but the idea that it is all the same in BOTW I simply can't agree on. Maybe in terms of the aesthetics of the Shrines, and it is true that there are a few empty spaces in its world, and not all of the Korok Seeds and Shrines are winners. But the reason I love it so much is because that it more than makes up for any kind of repeated asset with the amount of freedom given. Not just in the size of the world, but in the ways you can tackle each objective, how the game uses both a physics system and chemistry system to allow experimentation, and how it encourages you to find these solutions on your own. It's pretty much a third-person Immersive Sim like Thief, System Shock, and Deus Ex.

But that's just me.

I don't care if Douglas is a weirdo he needs to keep doing wesker for mercenaries... whenever it comes back.

Nah, either bring back Richard Waugh or even better, bring back the OG Wesker from the 90's, Pablo Kuntz.

Hell, Kuntz would probably be even cheaper than Waugh (and both would be cheaper and less risky than Douglas)

I like the reason why he wear shades... having a sensitivity to the light, that was my autistic headcanon. But the way the scene was executed was hilarious af.

First of all the graphics, some people may not consider that a valid complaint but REmake and especially RE0 still look amazing to this day, even other 3D Resident Evils of the era like the Outbreak games hold up better, while obviously RE4 looked great at the time, today it's muddy and blurry textures really dull the impact.

But more importantly it's the repetition, fighting hundreds and hundreds of Ganados just gets old long before the game is over, in other RE games even a single zombie could be scary because they weren't just cannon fodder, there was also overall a sense of progression with enemy variety in the other games with the Hunters, giant spiders etc.

There's some enemy variety like the Regeneradors, but there's only 3 main types of Ganado, the villagers, cultists and combatants and so much time is spent fighting them that it gets real tedious.

And finally the story, this is especially noticeable after playing all the other games back to back, they're clearly setting up a confrontation with Spencer and Wesker, so for 4 to side step all that with what essentially amounts to a side story is simply lame.

Obviously the game was ground breaking in 2005, but it's the way it's treated as some all time great game today that bothers me, it's not even the best RE game.

It's so amazingly hilarious im not entirely sure if it was intentional or not. That movie got a lot of laughs and good scares out of me. I still consider it a really fun film despite what some say.

Almost desperate to see what the sequel would be. Lets see how the box office is doing.....

Better then expected, but that's only a 6 million profit considering the film was 25 mill to make.

Go see it kewi's! spend your money damit! I want to see a film cross between code veronica and RE3/RE4!

How do you even find ideology in resident evil? It’s one of the most non-ideological franchises I’ve ever played.
If your entire existence and identity rely on ideology it will come from within. You find it everywhere even in mario bros. games. Check out Linkara's fascism deconstruction based on Captain America comics.

I mean, if you really want to look I suppose you could claim that the RE series is about the dangers of mega corporations or don't trust big pharma or some shit like that, though if it's gotten to the point you're looking for ideology in places there isn't any then you probably tilt at windmills.

Can't say the Don't Trust Big Pharma message is at all wrong though, in current year.
