Chronologically doesn't really work because Zero, despite taking place first, assumes familiarity with the other games to where you'd be pretty lost if you started there.I've never played any of the resident evil games. Are the games more-or-less standalone or should I play the games chronologically?
If they are stand alone stories, what games do you guys recommend?
As for what's readily available, start with REmake, then RE2 Remake and then RE Zero, the top 3 best games in the series imo, if you like them, you can then either track down or emulate the original RE3 and the original RE2 if you're curious, if you just want the broad strokes of the story you can play RE3 Remake, just keep in mind it's missing a lot from the original game.
If you're continuing to like the series, check out Resident Evil Code Veronica, although keeping in mind there's an enhanced HD edition but only on PS3 but I think the PS2 version if available to buy digitally on PS4.
As for RE4 I'd say wait and see how the remake turns out, the original game is pretty dated, if you find yourself getting pretty invested in the series' storyline you may want to play RE5 (and the DLC Lost In Nightmares) because it does have pretty important story info, but keep in mind it's not a great game.
I'd skip RE6 entirely, but definitely check out RE7 and RE8.
