I am hyped as fuck for RE8, I've waited a long time for Capcom to return to the "gothic" aesthetic that defined many of their games in the 2000s.

Agreed. Honestly, I think a Resident Evil game set in Egypt with a mummy theme might actually work as long as they don't go full RE6 "Call of Duty with mutants"

It looks like the soft reboot of the franchise seems to be trying to aim for having each game emulate specific sub-genres of horror from now on.

Resident Evil 7 - Backwoods Horror
REmakes 2 and 3 - Zombies
Resident Evil 8 - Vampires, Werewolves, Gothic Horror

Resident Evil 9 having an Egyptian motif would be excellent IMO.

Another concept that could work would be faeries, as crazy as that sounds at first.

If you have it where the monsters are more in line with ancient Celtic folklore instead of the Victorian or Disney stuff, then it might actually be pretty fucking scary. Set it in some desolate and windy moor in Ireland or Scotland.

Banshees, undines, changelings, dullahan, and sidhe are all fucking scary in their original contexts and they can entirely work within the contexts of earlier entries. The T-Veronica virus seems to grant users psychic powers and what is essentially magic, plus there is whatever agent Wesker used on himself when he faked his death.

I think a Resident Evil 9 should go full on Dario Argento/giallo and be set in Italy and basically be an unofficial remake of Haunting Ground, another dark, spooky castle, but this time in Italy with lots of surrealist architecture and the enemies could be various homunculi made with alchemy.

I'm hoping to see some elements of surrealism ala Haunting Ground in RE8, but if not that'd be perfect for RE9.

Your UK idea isn't bad though, they could take some inspiration from Clock Tower 3.

Here I am, just waiting for RE4 to get the RE2 style Remake. RE4 with updated graphics, not the crappy remaster from several years ago. They could literally keep all the mechanics and enemies. I could play that game over and over and over again.

So, is Code Veronica stingy with healing items, or am I just not looking hard enough?

I'm doing fine with ammo since the knife is so practical, but I seriously found my first red herb just before the first bandersnatch fight. And since I'm still getting used to the movement, I'm having a hell of a time trying to run past enemies, meaning that I'm constantly at orange health.

Does the game get less stingy over time, or am I sort of screwed?
It's not that hard, but then again, there is a glitch where you can have a infinite healing item. I can't remember how it was done and don't know if it's still in the new releases.

Anyway, i'm glad re8 is also on last gen consoles, i'm to poor for a new pc and i don't want to buy a ps5 or xbox.

I wouldn't want a full-on knockoff of Haunting Ground, but borrowing the alchemy elements from it would be neat to see.

RE8 has me pretty excited. I'm loving the gothic aesthetic; so far it's like a mix of Bloodborne and Clock Tower and I am all for that.

Don't. I'm already getting flashbacks to RE6 and the bottomless tomb pit under a Midwestern church filled with draugr armed with European weapons and armor.

As to the rest of it, vampires and werewolves are hilariously more plausible as bioweapons than you know, Birkin. Anyone else remember how Tyrant and Nemesis were initially genetically and surgically enhanced clones? You know, the sort of controllable, mass-producible bioweapon a corporation would love to have in its product catalogue. The only reason we had the zombie outbreak was due to outside assholes fucking with shit and Umbrella deciding STARS made perfect cannon fodder for a product test.
Birkin wasn’t really a bioweapon, he injected himself with the G virus after being shot up and dying. I enjoyed all of the tyrant variants as well as the BOWs that umbrella created directly, but I’m curious about how they’d explain werewolves and vampires.

I’m playing operation: raccoon city right now and I feel like it’d be so much better if you didn’t have to decide between multiplayer or babysitting 3 bots that will prematurely use sprays. The AI in outbreak wasn’t so bad and you could easily get through the game if you knew what you were doing.

The thing I learned about that game right off the bat was you had to be conservative about using resources. I learned the hard way that trying to stay in the green constantly was actually a bad idea for a while.

Yeah, I was fine with being yellow & orange up until I reached the palace when I was red. Had to mix a couple of green herbs to get back to yellow, but the first bandersnatch fight fucked me up badly. Since then, I've been red since I haven't found another green herb, and now I'm at the mercy of a couple of Cerberus's in the area you get the emblem card.

I hope it's just the early game being rough and not a sign of things to come when I reach Antarctica.

Yes, I'm aware of how Birkin ended up that way. Doesn't change the fact later games moved away from the relatively sensible designs of the Nemesis and Tyrant as Umbrella's ultimate end goal and towards... random mutant stuff. As to werewolves and vampires, virus-boosted genesplicing for the former and the latter... well, Spencer was trying to create some ultimate humans and maybe they're some weird offshoot.

I'm fine with giant goth vampire mommy, I just don't want the same bullshit that was in RE6 where someone becomes a skeleton t-rex out of nowhere.

Give me proper body horror, not some scifi channel original bullshit.

Some of the weird BOWs were interesting outside of their money makers like hunters, lickers and cerberus. It was fun seeing how the viruses interacted with animals in the area. The elephant from outbreak one of my favorites.

I hated Simmons so much, all of his fights seem like terrible ass pulls.

His death was so stereotypical it was comedic.

I wouldn't mind seeing an RE game with a wild west/Native American horror feel. There's a lot of scary ass shit in the native mythos and being stalked by a Wendigo through a redwood forest as the zombies become more hostile as the sun goes down seems like it might not be too bad.

While I know it'll never happen. Onimusha (a.k.a Resident Evil: Sengoku), could easily be brought back with it's horror roots intact.

Omg yes! There are so many myths & cultures to explore.

I don't understand why some people want RE to be like 1-3 over and over again with of course Zombies because there aren't enough games with Zombies.

Also I forgot the precious tank controls. It's not a RE game without Zombies and tank controls.

The Tall Lady is like a busty version of Daniella from Haunting Ground.

Same basic idea of being chased by a hot woman and there's something really interesting and unique when the monster you're being chased by is a hot woman, it's surprising you don't see that done more often.

I played REmake again last May and there's just something about those tank controls and fixed camera angles that is so appealing to me, I never understood why people complained so much about them as tank controls are very easy to get used if you're actually willing to give it a chance and fixed camera angles allow for such great cinematic atmosphere.

As much as I love RE7, RE2 Remake and am looking forward to RE8 it really bums me out how they literally don't make games completely in the classic survival horror style anymore.

I actually like tank controls but I agree that people just seem to want a rehash of the first three games over and over.

I'd say part of that is a knee-jerk reaction after the excesses of the "Action Era" games like RE5 and RE6 and older fans still being salty about the cop-out intro of RE4.

Another part is the fact that when Resident Evil came out, having a game with zombies in the vein of the 70's and 80's horror movies was seen as a novel idea.

Before RE1, zombies were usually low-tier undead in fantasy games and the zombie genre as a whole was dead in the 90's (no pun intended).

Like, we're talking they were even more unpopular as a genre than they are now and there wasn't even the excuse of The Walking Dead fad imploding like there is now.

The only major zombie movies that came out in the 1990's were all from the early 90's.

The lineup of English-language zombie films in the 90's consisted of the excellent Tom Savini remake of the original Night of the Living Dead, the criminally underrated Return of the Living Dead 3, and Peter Jackson's Braindead (which was called Dead Alive here in the US at the time)

Braindead may be a cult classic comedy horror now, but it was a big flop then while NOTLD '90 and Return of the Living Dead 3 under-performed. Zombies were hated by the mainstream and relegated to death metal albums and midnight filler on The Movie Channel or USA Up All Night in the 90's. The success of the Resident Evil games changed all that.

Resident Evil was arguably the biggest contribution to the zombie genre in the 90's. Danny Boyle was directly inspired by RE2 when he came up with the concept for 28 Days Later, the movie that led to the zombie revival of the 2000's and 2010's.

But the fact that the majority of the "Action Era" Resident Evil titles sucked (RE4 is awesome) and blind nostalgia for the late 90's and early 2000's shouldn't hold the series back. There's plenty of great ideas to explore.

You, me, Dom Cruise, and a couple others came up with several types of monsters and genre motifs that'd work and haven't been explored all that much in the series.

Egyptian mummies, Celtic faeries, Wild West and Native American folklore, and surreal Italian giallo would all make great templates for RE games.

We've done Romero's zombies with the classic RE games and it was brilliant but it's time to expand our horizons.

I'm gonna chuckle at all the guys pining for Tall Lady if she turns into a butt ugly monster when the game comes out.

It's fucking Resident Evil, it's practically a requirement for the antagonists to transform into ugly abominations.

I always found it ironic that the 1990s turned out to be a bad decade for zombie movies despite starting off with a bang with the '90 NOTLD remake.

Anyway to me Resident Evil as a series is fundamentally about this, monsters from folklore and our nightmares made real thanks to science gone wrong, it definitely doesn't have to revolve around zombies.
