RE7 and RE8 take place in husband training programs developed by Chris Redfield. Everything that happens is to ensure that Ethan will produce the perfect offspring with Claire. The marriage with Mia was just a practice marriage.is there ever an explanation on how Ethan even survives half the shit he goes through the game?
I read in a couple places that Chris severed ties with the BSAA because they started using T-103s in combat. Is that bullshit, or did I miss something?
yep. Chris and co snag a dead BSAA soldier and remove his helmet and bam.
Add in the CGI movie, Vendetta, and it's apparent there as well. One of the best things about RE8 Chris is how he's just about had it with the BSAA's ineffective leadership and just asked for his own crew. Well, the crew is ACTUALLY EFFECTIVE. Yeah they do take some casualties but most of them survive, they bring a tank, and they actually provide valuable support for Chris throughout 8. This puts Chris in a different light: He previously seemed like a god awful leader. Most of the BSAA missions we saw ended in complete wipes, starting with 5, and even Chris' own teams never survived. Even when Chris had a legit badass at his side like Piers Nivans, he'd end up losing them due to contrived reasons, overwhelming threat and mild incompetence.
Thing with Jill and Chris is that their original incarnations are super outdated by now. They both started as American action heroes in way over their heads and written by Japanese turbonerds in an era before the widespread of the internet. Chris was a borderline shonen hero: Hot blooded, passionate and brave, and a complete moron who never even saw Wesker's double cross coming. Then he's really upset at Wesker because he's failing to uphold the ideals of TRUTH AND JUSTICE and he killed people WITH HIS OWN DIRTY HANDS and all that. Chris changed a lot over the years into a more generic badass action hero, and then a veteran who's seen some shit and must carry on the fight regardless because he's the right man for the job and all that. Chris is getting some unironically good writing with the new guys.
Him flat out refusing to give the server data to Neo Umbrella, riddling it with shotgun shells instead, and refusing to bring Lucas in alive in spite of being quite capable of doing so is a good rerailment of the grief stricken vendetta he had against Carla in 6. He won't be broken by that, but he'll act in a way that makes sense rather than blindly follow his orders. It's a really good combination of his original FOR JUSTICE characterization, his tendency to go rogue if he feels the mission calls for it, as he probably did in the Air Force all the way in 1's backstory, and shows some actual capacity for learning.
One of the best things about RE8 Chris is how he's just about had it with the BSAA's ineffective leadership and just asked for his own crew. Well, the crew is ACTUALLY EFFECTIVE. Even when Chris had a legit badass at his side like Piers Nivans, he'd end up losing them due to contrived reasons, overwhelming threat and mild incompetence. The Wolf Hound Squad seems to be MUCH better prepared, and I like the implications that this is due to Chris having full control and command of the situation. Chris choosing to keep Rose close to him and train her as a soldier mirrors Leon's decision with Sherry, and obviously drafting the superweapon instead of getting rid of her establishes him as both a good man and a very reasonable commander. Not only is Rose a person who deserves a shot at life, independently of her origins, she can be a real asset in the war against BOWs.
Yeah, his refusal to explain why he shot Mia is pretty damn stupid and we literally could have avoided 99% of Re8's plot if he took two seconds to calm Ethan down and just tell him what's up. We should acknowledge very markedly that Chris is NOT acting "Like a bitch" to Ethan without a VERY good reason for it; He just doesn't fucking bother telling Ethan.
The worst thing is that this is IN CHARACTER for Chris. Chris has proven time and time again that he's an amazing, pretty much superhuman soldier, but a gullible moron who will be completely blindsided by even the most basic of schemes. He never saw Wesker's betrayal coming. He was perfectly happy with just rescuing Jill and bailing out of Africa, without even considering that Wesker was hours away from COMPLETE GLOBAL SATURATION. Jill had to plead with him to finish the damn mission, and it took actual, serious convincing. He fell hook, line and sinker for the Carla looks like Ada and sounds like Ada, therefore she MUST be Ada. Fuck me, he would even game over your ass if he found you during Ada's campaign, the implications being that he just snaps and kills her where she stands, not even letting her explain jack shit, all of this in spite of Piers' intentions to take her alive. He's happy to let Jake pop him for killing Wesker, when Wesker was trying to infect the entire world, and Jake popping him would have similarly resulted in the end of the world due to Chris being unable to finish his mission.
Chris being an idiot is sadly nothing new to the franchise. I really wouldn't put it past them to have looked into Chris' history and saying "Well yeah, this guy wouldn't bother explaining jack shit. He'd just expect to be trusted because he saved Ethan's ass before. He was happy to let the world burn for a chance at a catch up coffee with Jill, having him carefully explain why he had to shoot Mia would be weird for him if anything... Fuck it. Meathead Chris it is."
Jill was significantly less of an idiot and was this very specifically Japanese trending trope of a heroine who's cute, feminine, and super badass. They've always tried to keep that original personality alive. Even RE5 and MvC kept her as a feminine agile fighter. Lots of she-fu, flips, wheel kicks, frankensteiners and a lot of weight leverage to foil Chris' super manly barely trained but boulder-shattering strong fighting style. Jill dealt with more intrigue in her route. She got almost betrayed by Barry and Enrico got sneakily shot in the two seconds she wasn't looking. Her decision to not trust Carlos in Re3make, I guess would come from Barry saving her and then almost betraying her anyway. Jill actually suspected that there was a mole in the team. Chris had a much easier time trusting Rebecca, so they came off the Mansion Incident with different takes on the thing. Chris gained renewed and increased trust in the surviving members of his team, and he now knows they can get through anything together. Jill's just happy nobody shot her in the back, and even though she seems to fully trust Barry again, it has obviously changed her.
The problem with getting that across were the really weird choices. RE3M Jill is kind of a bitch. She's cutting and standoffish for down right petty reasons and stupid shit (I know what a radio is!!!) even though these people have quite literally just saved her life and are trying to achieve a good thing, she remains distrustful and dismissive of Carlos even though he keeps proving himself to her. There's one particular moment that just invokes Enoby D'Mentia Raven Way like a motherfucker: Carlos finds out that Umbrella is dirty... And he gets angry because Jill "trusted him" in spite of knowing how fucked Umbrella was. Then he punches a computer screen. And Jill is now officially a Mary Sue. Bitchy, constantly arguing with the characters she doesn't like, yet beloved by all. Carlos thinks she's great, even though she's been nothing but a bitch to him. Nikolai respects her competence and wants to force her to work for him. Nemesis is her bitch and gets to suck on her big gun before getting obliterated, Freud Freud. She's bitchy even to the poor BOW abominations, telling them to GET OUT OF MY WAY when they're really just innocent, mindless experiments in all this if you really think about it.
I think they were going for a generic Japanese hero. Tough, determined to survive, singleminded, and unstoppable. Problem is only having her interact with people she hates on principle due to the Umbrella and backstabbing things is just gonna make her come across as an irredeemable bitch. Even her shutting down Carlos is "normal" since all she wants to do is get out of Raccoon and Carlos is wasting time with his playful personality. I don't think it ever was about Carlos being a ToXiC MaLe coming on to a coworker or anything of the sort, Jill is just that focused on what needs to be done. You see this sort of dynamic in Japanese media all the time, and professionalism while on the clock is obviously a HUGE deal to them, but to Westerners, a dude saving your life ten minutes ago would probably warrant at least ONE shitty joke. Even if you were to shut him down, you'd shut him down gently. But you know how writers are, wanting their vision to come across unscathed, cultural differences be damned. You could fix that easily with around 3 or 4 line rewrites, but some Japanese dude probably didn't want that. To wit:
-The radio conversation:
J: "Wooow, does it need to have it's batteries in as well?"
C: "Yes, but it should last for a wh-"
J: "Carlos, I know. I'm a cop. I'm messing with you. You should pay more attention to what your superiors say."
C: "Oh. Oh! Right..."
Fixed. Mikhail later says that Carlos is kind of a dunce although he's a good soldier, so you've built some character, you make Jill play into Carlos lighter moments a little, so he gets a proverbial bone thrown at him. Tone set, Jill shows that she CAN trust the very reliable Carlos in spite of her trauma and doesn't dislike him PERSONALLY, which would be a smart thing to do after he saves her ass from Nemesis, although she still distrusts Umbrella. The way they did it just comes across as ToXiC MaLe mansplains and gets what for, which I really doubt was their idea. Carlos is a very young mercenary from a very poor country: He probably only learned how the radios worked recently himself. Him explaining without really thinking or knowing what a special unit cop would know isn't unreasonable.
-Tall glass of water conversation:
-C: "Surely a tall glass of water like you could put out a few flames..."
-J: "We're in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Wow. Just... Wow."
-C: "Any time's good for that!"
-J: "It really isn't!!! I'll call you when it's done!"
Again, fixed. This properly gets across that Jill just wants to escape, focus on the task at hand and makes Carlos look goofy and like he really needs to get his priorities straight and a handle on the situation. The actual dialog line, a cold, completely annoyed "Fuck you." tries to do the same but fails completely. Again, this dude has just saved your life ten minutes ago, surely he gets to pay you a mild compliment ONCE without you going ballistic. It's not even like he said "nice ass bby I would eat that through a scorching metal grate if I had to" it's just "You're tall and pretty". Fuck, Jill's based on a model too. You could say Carlos made a god damn matter of fact observation rather than a compliment and you'd still be right.
They eventually tried to fix this by having her be reluctant to shooting Nikolai due to fear of hitting Carlos, but that kinda failed to show she had come to trust him. The choice was just too cliche. Mind you, if it was Jill holding Nikolai down, and telling Carlos to take the shot because she trusts him and he won't miss, that would have gotten the point across perfectly fine. It was an odd choice to do it the way they did it, and it made Jill just seem ineffectual when she has been established to be all the other things, badass and unstoppable and an unreasonable crack shot...
Even the person she's nicest to in the whole damn game, Dario, who is a total dick to her in turn by the way, just serves to showcase that Jill is dutybound to her role as a cop and will try her damndest to do well at it. I honestly think Re3M Jill could have benefitted greatly from having more interactions with civilians to show her good side, but we only ever really got to see her be a complete bitch. So obviously, people are gonna call her that. Her REsistance incarnation is a fountain of memes and a lot more lighthearted, on top of being actually nice to teammates, but most people wouldn't know.
welp in RE7 he's a System Engineer
I thought people were going to make Ben Shapiro jokes, but it may just be me who notices the resemblance.
Much as the person who is very likely simping for Claire can say how she's a 19 year old that went through hell, the same can apply to every protagonist that was a normal person like her and Ethan. The Outbreak characters come to mind as well as Barry's daughter. It just makes it look like a sort of dick measuring contest and one can't forget that after Resident Evil 2, Claire pretty much got her own stint in being a bit more like a sort of character from an action film considering Code Veronica with its intro and fighting zombies by knifing them and dual-wielding some sort of SMG. Seeing Mylene before in the Capcom leak thread, I'm wondering what sort of essay it is he's talking about that comes from this site before. Is there really anyone being spergy about Jill as some stronk woman whose also overly-sexualised or is the anime avatar just throwing shit?Great read, Mylene should see this.

Ethan had to spend three years as a mold zombie, give my boy some credit
eh, just the "stan" accounts who headcanon everyone as a lesbian trying to start drama out of nothing. Nobody even said Ethan is the best character ever, but Village is his game so naturally people are talking about him.Much as the person who is very likely simping for Claire can say how she's a 19 year old that went through hell, the same can apply to every protagonist that was a normal person like her and Ethan. I've managed at least one SSS without completely clearing a level, so I guess its possible, but this shit keeps fucking up my combos. I think its because enemies will despawn when you wander from an area and then fail to respawn when you come back. Or they're just stuck in some weird corner.
I miss RE4's mercenaries mode.
