"Costs" covers filing fees, service costs, postage, expense of preparing exhibits, etc. It does not include attorney fees. Costs are typically awarded to the prevailing party, along with a nominal prevailing party fee.I'm not talking about how the court is setup, I'm talking about the actual suits themselves. I've been involved in a few lawsuits on either side (and won), and every single time, the demand section included "Plaintiff's costs herein expended" along with "any and all further relief this Court deems just and proper."
Attorney fees are typically included in the prayer for relief because if the other party does something during the course of the case that triggers fee-shifting then you might get them, but you would have had to have pled for them already.
