Obviously it's too expensive to set up your own registrar, and they'd find some excuse to veto it anyway, but is there any reason why you couldn't have a custom TLD that users configure in their routers themselves? That way you could have your own .sneed registrar that the authorities wouldn't be able to do anything about, particularly if you put the top-level DNS over an onion link.

I can see certificates being a problem because Let's Encrypt won't know anything about it, so you might also need a browser extension to make it so that self-signed DANE certificates are treated as secure. (They should be doing this anyway, but they're not.)

Trying to educate users on how to change their dns or host file to add in a static IP is already ridiculous. When we switch from .net to .st we lose a huge amount of traffic despite how much I try to educate people on the multiple domains.

However, we don't even have a static IP bro. We have to rely on DNS.

I'm still talking about DNS. You'd tell your router to use dotsneed3123....onion for .sneed addresses, and that server would in turn give the NS records for kiwifarms.sneed. The only difference is that it's overriding the root DNS for this one TLD.
