Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Normally I pass on remasters but Croc and The Thing are looking great:

With Croc, they are using the original source code and updating it for modern platforms. My only gripes are that the brightness in daytime areas is too high (as well as some of the lighting effects like when you collect a Gobbo) and the textures look smeary, like they were AI upscaled. Thankfully there will be a Retro Mode that switches the game to original assets and that looks great. The framerate is buttery smooth too. They are also implementing true 3D analog movement and an updated camera, however you will still be able to use tank controls if you prefer.
I thought Argonaut Software died?, did someone buy the name and the library or something?

I thought the same thing, and it seems that it was revived at the end of August of this year with the original founder at the helm and. Info is scarse at this moment so pardon if I'm mistaken
That's cool, though consitering many of the games Agronaut made are licensed games.... I donno how many they'll port over, or even if they'll make a new game.

Unrelated to Argonaut and Croc and I know this is from YoungYea but....

the Yuzu Team's stupidity and the declining common sense around ROMs and emulation and the consequences they've wrought has been a disaster for the human race.

>"we need to preserve video games!!"
>independent preservation efforts have been operating online for decades without issue aside from the occasional DMCA or niggertendo lawsuit against sites that got too popular
>"let's attract shyster scumfaggot eyes to independent preservation efforts that never asked for this shit by petitioning paid off yes men fair and impartial judges to give us special exemptions for their bullshit copyright game that's controlled by the companies that rape us in court!!"
>request denied
>draconian copyfaggot laws become more strictly enforced now that every corpodrone slave master and their grandma knows about ROMs and how millions of people download them
>news headlines about 40 year old soyboy virgin who got arrested for downloading mario's time machine on his iphone
>normiefaggots scared into submission
>websites hosting ROMs shut down or wipe all ROM downloads
>all ROM downloads magically vanish overnight
>independent preservation efforts cease to exist or disappear from public view thus stifling preservation and availability
>you want in? join our discord server and wait to take tranny dick up your ass for further instructions
>good luck circulating 300TB of Xbox 360 games

Watch as the normiefaggots cause the downloading of ROMs to become to a felony punishable by death. Normiefaggots should be made to pay the ridiculous scalper prices on eBay or pay Niggertendo every year for their drip feed rentals. No group of people will ever succeed in beating, overturning or abolishing copyright law. Anyone who thinks otherwise is retarded. The economy prides itself on raping the consumer by not allowing them to share or preserve anything so they can pay for the same shit over and over again. Normiefaggots will never stop buying into the system that allows them to do this. That's why anything cool or truly important should NEVER reach normiefaggots because once it does, the powers that be will notice and they can, have, and will crack down on it.

Can we get a summary here for those of us allergic to faggotry?

Discord is the problem, but like all such problems boils down to shit being too easy to use and thus not sufficiently gatekeeping.

I would fucking RAGE if that happened.

I'm so fucking sick and tired of people locking shit up behind Discord. Say what you want about chat programs of the past but NONE of them, even Skype, pulled this kind of shit where you needed to use the program to play a demo of a game or make edits on a wiki.

If Discord died tomorrow I'd throw a fucking party.

The reason nobody did this for Skype and such is because those took a token effort. Discord is literally click and go.
As gay as Discord’s communities are, there’s really not much to complain about with the platform itself. You don’t have to install anything and I don’t think you even need an account, just sign in as a guest (I may be wrong on this last point).

How the hell do you guys get your roms? I need backup places to get my roms once CDRomance and Internet Archive inevitably bite the dust.

We were just talking about tptb clamping down on ROMs and how there's no target too small for them, and you're straight up asking for links? Don't make life harder for Null.

Despite what I said, you could probably find links to still working resources in this thread if you bothered looking. Stop being lazy.

I blame scalpers for this, the price of retro games have shot up so high that it has locked out would-be consumers. Rather than take advantage of this by re-releasing the highly successful "mini" consoles Nintendo just went after the ROM sites instead.

If Nintendo would release a SNES Classics collection on PC like Sega did with Genesis games, it would make shit ton of money.

They're too busy pretending to be a hardware manufacturer still to do such a thing.

Can't wait for the Switch 2 to sell like hotcakes only to become a glorified paper weight because it's too underpowered to handle the most basic bitch games.

Would be nice though. As much of a Sega retard I am and wish we were in a world with the Dreamcast 2, it was for the best Sega focuses on software only now outside of their arcade division.

Well, there was that time when they flirted with mobile games, like Super Mario Run and some others--Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem.

I think they lost interest because mobile games suck, but the fact that they even went that far suggests they're not above re-releasing games on another platform.

I do think they're letting money sit on the table for that sort of thing, though—digital rereleases are dirt cheap and they're re-releasing ROMs that I never would've thought would get re-releases like Felix the Cat (which did get a Nintendo Power cover feature, but no one talked about it as some sort of overlooked masterpiece).

To add on top of that. Torrenting and other similar fileshare systems are still alive, learn to use them and get use to it since it's likely the only practical option going forward.

Just a fair warning... recently there's been this narrative going on (specifically on image boards) that using torrents (or any other download link for that matter), especially for gaming, will "give you a virus".

While you should tell these faggots to kill themselves, use common sense and your better judgement when it comes to downloading things.

Goddamn these gen alphas are retarded. I partially learned about torrenting from image board culture. There's an entire board on 4chan for torrents. I wasn't even that old when I learned to do it, I was like 15 16. Why are these kids so dumb?

A lot of torrenting today relies on seedboxes unfortunately. I don't seed cause I'm a faggot who can't spare internet expenses but most people don't seed at all which tanks download. Most of them end up dead unless they're the top of the download charts. So even if it's easy to do and gives good results, it's not going to be fully reliable into the future.

Standard rom sites. They're an endangered species but they will never go extinct. At least I hope. I relied on romulation and emuparadise till 2018, I relied on vimm.net till this year and I'll probably rely on reddits rom collection till that goes down and another one comes up.

I hate the fact that ecelebs use twitter and discord for fan interaction. There are a couple of them I'd like to talk to and I wish theyd use 4chan or make farm accounts cause I don't want to use discord.

Before I played Mario 64, I could not comprehend the idea of a 3D game not using tank controls. I thought all 3D platformers were going to control like Croc.

When I first saw video of Mario 64, I thought you would have a button to accelerate and you'd steer him like a car. That was the only way I could wrap my mind around what I was seeing.

Just use torrents and a VPN. Normies are afraid of torrents, so they generally avoid the eye of sauron.
