Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

How the hell do you guys get your roms? I need backup places to get my roms once CDRomance and Internet Archive inevitably bite the dust.
I use CDRomance for prepatched translated roms and I try to keep up to date for when it inevitably get shut down.

Otherwise download a full set and stick it on a hard drive.

The guys who are actually working on the Princess Crown translation posted an update video and holy fuck you can see the quality difference. Maybe the guy freebooting the code will motivate them to finish it soon.

Wait, no this isn’t. These are the guys who were sitting on it for the past ten years. As far as I’m concerned, the other guy is the one really working on it.

Hacked my old PSP that I almost sold. I think I'm having more fun with that than I ever did with the Switch. I'm doing my Vita next. I think I'm going to sell my Switch instead.
Hacked Vitas are great, I use it more than Switch and Steam Deck. GBA emulation is the only iffy part, it's playable but not great for action games in my experience.

The Paper Mario debacle got me thinking, right? I have a four year old cousin, around the same time I started playing video games. I don’t want to get her a Switch- between the (presumably for a 4 year old) large amount of buttons, the highly breakable screen, and the actual, real life sexual fetishes the troonslaters are forcing onto us, I want something a bit less complex and/or breakable. Should I go for an SNES (or aftermarket SNES) and flashcart? And if I do, what games would be best for a four year old girl?
I'm kind of a vidya "dealer" so it's kind of hypocritical of me to say, but
I'm with @The Cheese Aisle on this, if she's not yet into it, just don't; keep her, and anybody else you can, away from "entertainment".

I have a 5600x cpu (...) The solution online is "get a better CPU", so maybe it's just a difficult game to run?
Look for the answer in older sites or forum posts, nowadays almost everyone is a corpo shill giving copy/paste non-answers

F-Zero GX is the benchmark for GameCube emulation, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for Wii, and one of the God of Wars for PSP. Other than that, I guess Star Fox 2 for SNES?
Do you mean compatibility or performance? TVC isn't hard to emulate eitherway, GoW is only performance heavy. No idea about the rest.

All that said I do have complete sets for the 16 bit and older consoles but thats because all of them were on a single torrent, the file size is small and was easier than getting individual titles for the older stuff.
Even on older systems, multi-disc games could take a lot.

I'm actually baffled when people try to lump DC in with 5th gen.
It doesn't help that many, if not most of its titles, sometimes even exclusives like Draconus, look like barely improved PS1 ports, made only worse by the fact that there are actual PS1 "ports" like Chicken Run and Urban Chaos that look sufficiently improved, and the DC could emulate (or whatever it was Bleem!cast did) PS1 games, often giving the PS2 a run for its money.

Shit, I didn't think the first one ran on any OS after XP.
It does but it's a hassle,
Is there any reason to buy it given they run perfectly well on multiple emulators and can be upscaled and enhanced that way?
Classic Rebirth is the way to play classic Crapcom horror (re 1,2,3 and dc 1,2). Require certain japanese versions though.

There's a lot of these videos if you search for "push hardware limits" (or similar), that are better researched and represented.

What are some arcade sports and simple arcade style action games worth checking out? Preferably from the GBA and earlier, but anything will do.
Black Belt Challenge for GBA.
Super Sports Blast
Dunk Lords (woke-ish char. design)
SAT-BOX's catalog
3DClouds' catalog
Hotshot Racing
Horizon Chase series (unfair as fuck)

I took one look at that controller (...) vmu
The VMU is cool and all, but if that's the reason for less buttons on the actual pad, then it's totally not worth it and should've been optional.

Holy shit, what is it with dev companies loosing their old stuff!?
With NASA saying they've filmed over the original Moon Landing™ tapes, you should be surprised if any game company does keep shit around.

Nice try Nintendo.

Performance; but really? I haven’t emulated TvC myself but I remember watching a mini PC review a while back and it said something like “this can handle any Wii game at 2x resolution except the most demanding games like TvC which can only do 1x”. I can definitely vouch for F-Zero GX and GoW though.

"No, we aren't releasing a beta now, and no, we can't make promises about when we'll finish."
THEN WHY ARE YOU SO UPSET THAT SOMEONE FINISHED IT BEFORE YOU, BASED ON THE SCANT MATERIAL YOU DID FINISH?! Again, what is it with translators and emulator devs being whiny faggots these days?

If only the Vita had rumble. One of the biggest things in Switch's favor as a portable imo but I know a lot of people don't care for it.

Because they are fags who have nothing better to do with their lives than cut their dicks off and autistically write code 24/7, so the hobby becomes their life and they give projects like this the same apathy they give themselves. Then they seethe with jealous, shitting rage when someone else completely BTFO's their half-assed projects.

Related, but some faggot Gideon Zhi was in the process of translating Super Robot Wars 4 and he basically gave up on the project and translating games altogether 3 years ago so that he can whine on twatter all day as if anyone gives a shit about his personal life. Just shut the fuck up and translate the games or release the project files so we can finish it ourselves, you nigger. These retards think that doing shit like translating some nip game or finding rare shit gives them a license to act like whiny pussies online and to have all eyes and ears on them when they do it. Put up or shut up. If you're going to translate a game and you're serious about it, keep quiet about it until it's finished instead of fishing for asspats from simps.

Battery life maybe? It wasn't great but lasted longer than the 3DS, so rumble would made it even shorter or in par with that.

Remember the optional rumble pack for the DS? Would loved that more games supported it, but Nintendo dropping support for GBA cartridges on the DSi killed it alongside the Guitar Hero accessory

A bunch of classic Sega games are being delisted from all digital storefronts. Genesis, Dreamcast, NIGHTS into Dreams, Sonic the Fighters; basically everything except Sonic Adventure 1/2.

Now, you may be wondering "Why would they suddenly take down all these games? Will I be able to purchase them through other means? Why are the PS3 versions conveniently exempt from all this?" Good questions!

...
aaaaanyway, you have until December 6.

This is such horseshit. No more Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5 or Jet Set fucking Radio on Steam? What's the fucking logic, will just push people to emulate. I also hate that the actual PC ports here are just lumped with Genesis ROMs being taken down on the list, which are already backed up forever.

The Sega Ages stuff is safe, that makes me happy. You know the most Frequently Asked Question is "fucking why" but it's not in the FAQ for some reason.

Maybe Nintendo doesn't like the normalization and general goodwill of giving end users the raw ROMs with some of these Genesis releases on Steam. They want people to pay for their shitty service with Genesis Online instead. Although Sega has done this before with the Sonic games when Origins came out so who knows

I know that most of the classic Sega games on Steam were just ROMs but there is no reason for this unless they're doing another collection some time right after delisting it. Either way, buy them while you still have the chance.

Oh I dobut Nintendo has that much of a hand on it since Sega also delisted the original version of Sonic Generations (including the preexisting PC version) when they were getting ready to release the remaster that has Shadow Generations bolted alongside it.

Aren't some of them getting those new version revivals Sega announced some time ago... that also happen to look fucking awful by the way.

That's probably why some of those are gone... they are probably getting the Sonic Generations treatment where the new ones will be "the best" version while the old ones will be Thanos'd away.
