Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Since this thread is once again in full anti-RetroArch sperg mode, I will once again shill that RetroBat combines whatever emulators you want (standalone or RA cores), with heavy settings customization on a per-system or even per-game basis, all wrapped under the easy to use+visually customizable+basically zero load time EmulationStation. Do you want certain Wii games to simulate a horizontal Wiimote on your USB controller while others use a real remote? Maybe a specific problematic game needs to use a different emulator with its own config? Map button controls to one of your Flash games, why not? And built-in metadata+art scraping, of course.

I think they also recently added better support for Steam game shortcuts but I haven’t tried that out yet.

even Nintendo has never cared about Mario continuity
my friend and I once were drinking a a 30 rack of beer and playing snes games one weekend a few years ago, and were laughing about how Mario as a character has the weirdest life of a fictional guy while we played Yoshi's Island.

Mario is some Italian dude from NYC who a stork was bringing to his parents and through a series of misadventures ended up getting lost and taken across the land by a group of happy little dinosaurs, and then eventually made it home, grew up, was working construction and his girlfriend got kidnapped by a gorilla, he had to kick his ass, then held him hostage and a baby gorilla kicked HIS ass, then his brother and him went to fix some pipes and crabs and turtles and shit were attacking them, they went into a pipe and ended up in a magical mushroom world and had to go fight some turtle wizard and save a princess.

later on them, the princess and a mushroom man had to go fight a frog and a rat guy in his dreams somehow, then the turtle wizard showed back up with a bunch of kids and turned kings into weird shit, and Mario stopped him using the power of one of those furry tail buttplugs. then they go on vacation, the turtle kidnaps the princess again and randomly Mario discovers he also trapped the happy dinosaurs who saved him as an infant in eggs. at some point after this all of these characters start getting together to drive go karts and play sports. between events the turtle continues kidnapping the princess, Mario fights an alien and drives a submarine at some point, and fights a guy who looks like a fatter version of him who almost has the same name who stole his house or something and eats garlic and fucks pirate chicks.

LaunchBox auto-configs a lot of RetroArch stuff but every time I open a menu or try to change anything it's still a journey into hell.

I used LaunchBox for a while and just couldn’t keep it any longer. It took way too long to load, both the desktop and BigBox interfaces felt clunky and tedious, and you had to re-import a directory every time you added/removed a game.

It looks good for PC games, but not so much for roms/emulator management. I’ll look into it, though.
After setting up an emulator and the folder to look for them it seems to work pretty well; there's all sorts of configurations for popular emulators not just Retroarch.

Shouldn't pose a problem unless you have hundreds of ROMs per system.

As the resident Skies of Arcadia fag, it is my sworn duty to share this patch for the Dreamcast version.
- Audio in cutscenes are all in sync 1:1 with the JP/US release, no more drifting delayed audio.
- SFX's are also reverted to the JP/US release ones as these also were 50Hz optimized.
- Walking speed is now the exact value as the JP/US release.
- Region-Free
- RGB, VGA, Composite, all in 60Hz with multi-language support for the first time without issues.
There's also apparently another patch coming that restores the censored content and lowers the encounter rate significantly so I'd wait for that to drop too

Is it still worth keeping up with these patches or going with the GCN version for the extra content for a first playthrough?

I'll give RetroArch some credit regarding the APT package size I talked about before. Most of the 500+MB comes from the fonts-noto-extra package it depends on, which weighs in at over 300MB. I'm not gonna give all the credit because why does it need to depend on this giant package? Surely it would function just as well with a smaller subset of fonts.

Google Groups has a whole heaping archive of usenet posts from the old days and you can find vintage console wars sperging in droves. I found this gem in rec.games.video.nintendo:
So I Open Up My GameCube Box...

and these little cards fall out all over my living room floor. I pick
them up and notice they have elaborate artwork on them. Some with
little pink triangles and others with purple, stylized symbols for man.
On the reverse side of each card is some wording that says "Now that
you've become one of us, please call (800) 555 - 6969"

I thought the "become one of us" referred to me joining the ranks of
GameCube owners. Boy was I wrong.

I called the number, expecting to register my GameCube online when a guy
who sounded like a cross between Charles Nelson Reilly, JM J. Bullock
and Rupaul answers with a resouding "HELLO AND WELCOME TO HOMOS R' US
!!!". I hung the phone up.

I was a bit stunned and somewhat shocked. Clearly I had misdialed.
After cracking open a beer to calm my nerves a little, I redialed. The
same guy answers the phone again with
"HELLO AND WELCOME TO HOMOS R' US !!!".

I said, "Uh, excuse me....isn't this (800) 555- 6969?". (S)he replied,
"It sure is sweetheart !".

"I thought this was the place to register your GameCUbe".

"Oh, it IS ! And we like to refer to it by its *real* name, here.
THE GAYCUBE"

I hung the phone up, packed the Gaycube...er GameCube, threw it in the
dumpster, poured lighter fluid on it and burned it to a crisp. I wanted
nothing further to do with that box. I was outraged that Nintendo would
align itself with such a cause. I mean, I had my suspicions that
Nintendo was a little on the fruity side with Hello Kitty consoles and
hot pink GBA's. But never in my wildest imagination did I think they
would do something like this.

I'm going back to the Xbox. A console for a real man. I advise the
rest of you to do the same.

I definitely want to play Skys of Arcadia one day. Some of the island aesthetics are really good looking. Like Baten Kaitos, the art design is tops.

What threw me off was revisiting the Legends edition and the gluttony of discoveries. They’re just these arbitrary collect-a-thons.

The trip to Yafutoma turns this from “good” into “great.” Bizarre, foreign land and seeing how the cultures mesh, Enrique defending the honor of that geisha babe while boarding his ship to take it back from enemy hands.:semperfidelis:

The game’s easy, but you can still speedrun. They give you tools to vaporize trash mobs. (If you’re looking to wrap up ship battles fast, suddenly you’ve gotta be strategic).

I want to purchase both a GameCube-style controller with proper triggers (and rumble) AND a Nintendo 64-style controller with C-buttons. I know we discussed it here, but what are my best options currently?

After years, I think I've finally decided on my MiSTer build. I want a hybrid of MiSTer for the old stuff and a CPU based device for the new stuff.
Originally I wanted a fancy custom case with a Rock 5b to do other stuff and a KVM.
Then I realized the Rock had horrible compatibility.
Then I want to a Raspberry Pi 5 in a Checkmate A1500 case. Which is slow but pretty.
I toyed with other SBC and ITX boards and then I decided "Fuck it"

I have a PC that doesn't get used for much except for the couch. I'll replace it with the Pi and build the MiSTer into a Goodisory SR01 case with the MiSTer hub connected to a USB switch so the small case acts as the connection point/USB hub for controllers, keyboard, mouse, etc and can be switched between the PC in its own case and MiSTer inside. A 3d printed front and rear panel for the connectors and a bit of wiring.
As I'm probably going to use the PC as the file server for the ROMS I'd just need to plug in a USB stick or maybe a larger MicroSD if I want to take the MiSTer portable.

So, let me share with you the prototype.

I think it's coming along nicely, have the fancy plastic safety case to not shove my fingers into the live 120v connections.
