Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

God, I know that feel. That is why I was kind of hopeful about popstarter. I have some 4 and 6TB sata drives laying around doing nothing, If I could load up a PSX library as easily as the PS2 library and just have it work...
I can throw an older RTX2070 into my media box and emulate, but I'd need to order a new power supply. I think I still have couple of old R7 370s, too. But I always had more issues with AMD cards and emulation.

I just need to finish working on my house so I can order myself some toys. I just dropped a few hundred on a new water softener. Balancing need and want, always a bitch.
If you are willing to settle for emulation for now and you want as close to hardware accuracy as possible, go with Beetle PSX with HW capability disabled. It's about as close as it gets. It's available as a core on RetroArch or you can use it in mednafen

Why not use Duckstation which has outpaced Beetle PSX for YEARS? The only hangup/benefit is that it's standalone and doesn't require you to work with RetroArch.

I should get a SATA adapter for it so I can throw a bigger drive in. I need to look into that, soon. That IDE drive is getting old...
When you do either get a StarTech adapter or a System Talks Sugoi Adapter 2535. Most other adapters have a really poorly made controller chip that doesn't work as well.

There are some direct SATA network adapters but they also have the cheap poorly made controller in them.

I tried Duckstation when it was new and wasn't impressed, it struck me as being geared more toward enhancements than accuracy. I've used Beetle PSX for years and to me, it looks exactly like a real PS1 as long as enhancements are disabled. But I will give Duckstation another shot since it's been a while

Using anything but Duckstation in 2025 is pretty retarded. Beetle can't keep up with it anymore. Of course you have to use the stand alone of Duckstation, since the Retroarch core hasn't been updated in ages and never will.

If it works it works dude, Beetle was running all my games with no issues while the dude/future tranny behind Cuckstation was still an itch in his father's pants. It's not like they're releasing new PS1 games that require emulators to be continually updated either. Get off your high horse.

The SwanStation core should be fine from what I've seen. It doesn't have the absolute cutting-edge of updates, but the last commit to the repo (not counting stuff like readme) was last year.

I don't have any, I just want to rant that it's fucking hilarious that the VMU seems to have the most unique and/or interesting games among Sega handhelds.
Cope. The VMU? It was a joke. If you pulled your controller out while saving, guess what? Your save file's gone. Poof. Like it never existed.

The only thing it was good for was sports games. Normally, your opponent has to close their eyes while you pick your play. But with the VMU, you wouldn't know exactly what play was coming.

There's a 60FPS patch for Banjo Kazooie and Tooie XBLA for Xenia. The game looks so good, draw distance is better, no slowdown, no recollecting notes.
The only downside is the patch breaks the snowman AI on Freezeezy Peak. Other than that this was perfect.

I have still have two consoles that are very dear to me:
  • My trusty GBA. The shell is badly yellowed and brittle in parts, the screen was almost dead, most buttons had their membrane completely shot and the power button works when it wants. I've changed the screen (bought an IPS) and membranes, also put a usb-c battery pack. Some contact cleaner improved the power button operation but it's still far from great.
I don't have many games left, so I bought a flash cartridge and still play from time to time (mostly when I'm on the move).

  • My equally trusty GameCube that got me through college. The mini DVD drive is very weary and may drop dead at any minute, I've installed a Picoboot and a SD2SP2 (upgraded to v2).
With Swiss support for Serial Port 1 now, this brings me closer to having a functional BBA replacement. All actual boards available ATM are based on the ENC28J60 chip, which has quite limited performances. I'm waiting for a new board based on W6100 (which is the "best" serial <=> Ethernet chip supported by Swiss at the moment).
I did some "retrogaming" (if that can be called as such) in the late 2000s (2007 ?) when I had to reinstall things on the family's old 486 (?) that was being given to a family friend. I only had something like 2 weeks to clear the "old games" floppy backlog. I remember finishing System Shock and playing a bit of Dune 2.

This looks great. I like the design of Mario where it's more like the original Donkey Kong version of him
Why the fuck would you make a fictive SNES CD game and then make it look like an ugly fake "this is what the FC would be like with more graphics" image like you'd see a decade ago, what a waste of hardware.

The thing that bothers me is this....

As soon as i read the title I immediately though "oh, so like Sonic CD then?". Sonic CD was basically Sonic 1, even including his Sonic 1 sprite, but graphically improved thanks to the additional hardware. The colors were better, Mode 7 was a thing now for SEGA's machine (I mean it could do it without the CD attachment, the SNES just had better hardware to support it without major lag) and thanks to redbook audio, the music was also upgraded.

SMB-CD.... isn't that... at least on the more obvious graphical level. You can't even say it's because they are protecting their ass from a possible DMCA because the Buzzy Beetles look like they came straight out of Mario 1.

That looks like indie shovelware I would see on the Nintendo eSlop

Hey trannyfaggot indie devs, at least do some basic research before making these wasteful projects. NES graphics are 8 bit, SNES graphics are 16 bit. You're making slopbrew for the SNES and its CD addon. That means it has to look like Super Mario World, not the bootleg NES version of it

Super Mario's Wacky Worlds for the CD-i (unreleased) literally looks better than that slop and more like a Mario game even if the video released looks more like a ripoff made in Flash. Their Mario game, on the other hand, looks like something released in Eastern Europe under the name "Piotr the Plumber".

Only marginally related, but the wife and I played through a MSU-1 enhanced version of Super Mario World on SD2SNES about a year ago. It was actually kind of cool playing it with all these CD quality remixes.

Funny you say that, because the soundtrack does remind me of Sonic CD… except it’s the US version. As in, it sounds good in isolation but doesn’t really fit the game.
