Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

if you're looking for more super metroid, Subversion is easily the best one i've played.
Few hours into this, and yeah, this is one of the few ROM hacks that has kept my attention for an hour. Really great so far. Not impossibly challenging, but a bit harder than the original and a good fun. The new custom items are neat too.

Thanks for the recommendation. Hoping this keeps up until the end.

Speaking of Timesplitter, anyone has any news on either TimeSpliter Rewind and TimeSplitter 4?
TimeSplitters Rewind posted an update last Christmas. They've been sharing lots of progress regarding the project, even though it's been horribly slow. (It is a fan project after all)

Here's their most-recent update video:

As for TS4, no-fucking-clue. Honestly, I've given up hope for a TS4 ever since the days of that old "Monkey in a Master Chief suit" trailer never came to be, and looking at the state of the modern gaming industry, that may be for the best.

There's PS3/360 games there now. Can probably be found on internet archive as well(those guys are flying too close to the sun).
Depends on what you're looking for. I've yet to see a proper collection, and even some retro games have spotty collections.

I don't think Archive.org is too close to the sun yet. If they start hosting Switch games, yes, but old consoles you can't buy anymore should be fair game. (Though that's true of all emulation sites, but they get pulled down, so what do I know.)

It's been over a decade and this thing STILL ISN'T OUT? Jesus fucking christ.

I think all the hardcore Timesplitters guys have moved on by now.

Archive.org has the entire 3DS and Wii-U library. So you can download Breath of the Wild from there and that game is also on the Switch. I bring this up because Nintendo really doesn't like these things.

If you're talking about Rewind, that's because it's a hobby project, not a professional game project. They aren't really allowed to make money working on this project, so the people working on it are doing it for free in their spare time.

Wii U usb helper is generally better for 3DS and Wii U games. If you want BOTW in specific Fitgirl has a pretty good repack from 2021 which can be updated with the proper cemu version. Dont trust public dump sites for anything beyond the 3DS. Wait till they come on the r/roms megathread or vimm.net.

Odd question. Is there any benefit to playing emulators on CRTs?

I was playing PS2 emulation last night and the scrolling text was incredibly blurry, something I put down to de-interlacing of the emulator and ghosting from the TV. I rarely play on real retro hardware these days, and was wondering if there'd be any benefit to using an emulator on a CRT.

No clue in the modern era but I recall twenty years ago or so imbNES for the ps1 was really comfy on a crt tv compared to a windows emu on a monitor and a PC or a laptop
Put in a ton of milage with that on the front porch of a job, smoking like a chimney and using that Hori Tekken psx early stick. Good times

Also what's good for Turbo Duo 16 whatever on Android?
My ps1 emu updated and ate my Chocobo Dungeon 2 save in the process, got a hankering to try those Galaxy Fraulein Yuna translations

Rent-a-Hero no. 1, the often overlooked sequel to the Genesis original recently got an English translation. It's.... interesting. It's a game I've known about for a while being the massive Segafag I am, but it being untranslated left me playing other stuff instead and just forgetting about it. It starts off really slow, and from what I've seen playing only the first hour of it, Gameplay is a mixture of fetch quests and a fighting system that has a few combos but isn't super deep and kinda tedious. Also for whatever reason, despite being a Dreamcast game, movement can only be done with the d-pad. I'm glad it's finally translated, but unfortunately, it's another game that proves not every game that was left in Japan was some secret hidden gem. I'd give it a itsprettymediocre/10.

I played emulators on my original Xbox on a CRT way back when and loved it, since it actually looked and felt like the real deal. CRTs are good because there's no display lag, and old games were designed around being played on them, so it softens all those rough pixels. Text on SD-era 3D games seems to more often than not look like shit in emulation for one reason or another, so I'm not sure if playing on a CRT would make whatever you're playing look better.

I'm really hoping we get a translation of Segaga soon. That's one dreamcast game that's always intrigued me.

Some madlad from /vr/ learned Japanese just to translate SGGG, and has been working on it for over a decade and is apparently pretty close to finishing it. It's a game I legit thought was in the "never ever" category due it being so obscure, but it just might see the light of day.
