Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

or Janathon shooting at the endlessly respawning guards instead of moving were softlocks. In Area 51, the guards carry grenades that are needed to destroy turrets and the mine field, but they throw them at you pretty much immediately, so rushing them down at the cost of taking damage is all but required.
These were both things that happened in the original IIRC.

I snagged the Cowabunga Collection a while back and I just started playing the original NES TMNT game. I haven’t played this since I was a little kid(too young for video games, honestly) on the original hardware and never got past the dam level, but now with save states and rewind I can actually play the game. Even with those QoL features though, this game is hard as shit.

I always remember the 8 and 16 bit era as being full of impossibly difficult games but tend to shrug that off as just a product of me being a dumb baby at the time, but no, these games were punishing. I can see why gaming was looked at as just for kids at the time, because what adult would waste their limited free time playing games that run like shit and have the difficulty cranked to 11?

What’s wrong with archive.org’s collection, and what makes you associate it with Reddit?
Reddits r/roms have documented official collections of every single software from every single console till I think the PS3 on archive.org with all the links being on their r/roms megathread. These are practically the definitive archives for almost all of those consoles outside of vimm.net and formerly emuparadise. There are unofficial collections as well, Im not referring to those.

What's a good GameBoy emulator? I'm after easy to use and controller support. Other features would be nice to have, but I'm not concerned about them. Screen filters and rewind.

I'm after it as I'm working on a GameBoy game using GBStudio and want to be able to test it on a controller. I also want something I can suggest when people ask what emulator to use.

Did you play PAL or NTSC?

I recommend this video if you care about why the underwater level sucks so much.
He does a bunch of videos about TMNT on NES. Worth watching if you enjoy that level of autism.

Thing is, that particular game basically just sucks, that might be part of the problem here

The vids DG made on Strider NES are absolutely amazing, somehow devs at Capcom made the game equivalent of an Ed Wood film and somehow did everything needed to make a game completely ass backward to the point of being impressive. The way it can't decide to read wall jumps backward or forward, rewriting sprite data per line before the screen refreshes, forcing itself to do vertical scroll when you can visibly see it suffering trying to do it, it's fucking wild.

Is it worth buying a PS2 if I don't have a CRT? A friend gave me a spare FreeMCBoot card and I'm willing to buy a refurbished PS2 fat so I could just keep games on a hard drive. I was wondering if the input lag would be unbearable enough on a flatscreen TV to be worth the purchase of a PS2 as opposed to just emulating PS2 games like I've been doing so far. I have a fairly large backlog of PS2 games that I still have to get through, so I wouldn't mind the investment into things like a RetroTINK if I have to get one (jesus fuck they're 325??).

played on both, the input lag is all dependant on the how bad the cable and tv is.
I've also played a lot on a LCD tv that had the AC input, looked and played fine.
If you have a fat (works with slim models too) and freemcboot, also get the hard drive launcher for extra space and less fiddling with disks.

What I find most frustrating is most Game Boy emulators let you use some of the built-in Super Game Boy borders but half of them are on the Super Game Boy ROM for SNES, which doesn't let you play games inside of it.

That's because Super Game Boy is an SNES game (albeit one that has Game Boy hardware built in), so you need an SNES emulator. MESEN-S and I think BSNES support true SGB, not sure about others.

I use BGB. You can customize the colors to be whatever the hell you want it to be and make SuperGameBoy the default system

I'd just like to say thank you Vimm's Lair.
Hell yeah, Vimm has provided me with countless hours of vidya game enjoyment, with not really much profit to be had(afaik his ad revenue mainly just helps keep his servers going). Vimm is based as hell. His website is the only one I have whitelisted on my adblocker lol.

It's worth reiterating though, that his site isnt down at all. Every single non-Nintendo published game is still available, including full PS1, 2, and 3 libraries, as well as anything sega related, and even all other games on nintendo's own platforms. I know that nintendo is the main draw of the emulation hobby, but theres so many other great games still on Vimm's site that its unreal. And the nintendo published games are readily available on many other sites. Just wanted to clarify for the sake of the thread's posterity.

Yes, it’s AliExpress, but I’ve been neglecting my NES for a little bit. That’s why I’m thinking about getting this multicart.

I’m probably going to do the same thing with the Genesis pretty soon.

At that price, you might as well pay another $30 or whatever it is and just get a flashcart. Though I got a pretty good 200-in-1 cart for about $20 way back that’s served me well.
