To be clear here for people who do not know, Nightcrawler is the owner of RHDN. He did some translations back in the day, such as Emerald Dragon and Wozz.

I am unclear if he is involved in faggotry, but my recollection is that he was pretty liberal. It's weird that he brought up Near when the whole thing seems unrelated, but that's what being a dead strawman gets I suppose.

The guy on the cohost is Gideon Zhi, who runs Aeon Genesis. I remember him saying once he used to be a psychology major, and you know what they say about those.

I think it is going to take awhile for someone to come forward with what Nightcrawler was talking about with the "sinister" thing.

This is MasterKnightDH/NessHelper, an ancient contemporary of CWC and ADF (length of time, not necessarily for interactions) that has been a super sperg since been spergin, playa.

Their thread is only 6 pages because honestly they're boring as hell but my man Juffalo Family over on Vimeo has some of his retarded bullshit from many many years ago (2011!) and they're amazing, highly recommended if you love old school spergin about nothing.

I've used the site forever but never had an account. it's amazing the amount of drama and the eclectic cast of weirdos in the romhacking sphere. I used to laugh my ass off at weird drama in their forums. it's such a (literally) autistic hobby it's like impossible to just exist in.

its a lot of dick measuring over who is the smartest and knows the most, what's the objectively correct way to translate something, then political shit where you would have the og badhacks guys pissed off they couldn't post games they make about dudes with their dicks out shooting swastikas at niggers, but the gay people could post pronoun hacks that just change a line of dialogue or make link a chick.

It's also a lot of gaslighting from all sides and every party involved to the point it's almost impossible to parse what actually happened as an outsider reading it. A lot of the site's issues seemed to be website problems making it un user-friendly to uploaders, general hands off not giving a fuck from the lead admin, and mod crews that would just do whatever they want and team up and fuck people over. but then you'd also have people who purposely would rile those mods up to get them to do that then complain about it like they didn't do it obviously on purpose.

they had a lot of seemingly intentionally vague ass rules that mods would abuse to highlight thinks they approve of and be hypocritical and remove what they didnt. From posted hacks, to descriptions, to forum posts. It was an insane thing to follow there were splinter sites, and little gayops wars hidden in discords. goofy shit.

you'd also see other gay drama like rival groups translating the same game and fighting over it and people picking sides, or people forming teams to do something that fell apart spectacularly, and plenty of retards who came in and announced a project that it was obvious they weren't going to do bc they were probably 12 and stupid, or people who just lied about progress on things and didn't make anything at all but other dumbfucks would continue to check in for years and be like can't wait til its finished

that one is fucking insane. I laughed at their existence more than I actually played them. I tend to be more interested in QoL or translations. however the badhacks guys always made me laugh until I was in tears with simple jokes from the titles. they'd always be like almost the same as the original game but juvenile as fuck.

Cum Fu, Ass Climber, Fag Team Pro Wrestling, MegaFag 2, Retard City Ransom, Gayassian. and then if you booted them up it would always just be a guy with a huge 8 bit cock walking around. It was always humorous to me because those guys had been doing that same shit since the 90s and were who had broke ground in actually figuring out NES hacking that is what a lot of things are built on today but there they were in 2014 or whatever just making their gay fag games and laughing amongst themselves.

edit: those guys are still around too. I looked at their website yesterday and their forum seems to be like 4 people but they're still chugging along with their romhack shitposts some of them a whole 27 years since they started.

I Just checked BaddestHacks and they have a news post about RHDN going under. Towards the end I couldn't help but chuckle reading this.

That would explain why downloading hacks from the website needs a Captcha code, bu the website owner said that Google was at fault because they though that RomHacking.net was a SPAM site.

It takes the most autistic people on the planet to disassemble and reassemble a game to change it. Imagine the amount of time and learning random shit to be able to do that? It's neat, but I could never do that. like building a ship in the bottle, model train railways, ham radios, stuff like that, sounds fun but a lot of a life investment. These people have no social skills to speak of, then get together. mix it with some old school forum and discord echo chambers, slapfights, and the political divide of the last 15 years and there you go.

A recipe for disaster, but also one that as a casual user who enjoys these things, you'd never know.

What gets me about some of these romhackers is they swear up and down that romhacking is separate from warez, and that's why they won't use romhacking.org unless the admin is changed from the one who also runs CDRomance, known for prepatched ROMs and apparently "fascism" in the community. It's delusional, frankly.

I am real tired of power-grabbing autists, most of whom have limited ability as can be seen by going to the baddesthacks forum which documents that many of the RHDN staff inflated their contribution counts with bullshit.

it has nothing to do with the former, all to do with the latter. they don't actually care about any of that. I've been reading the same comment sections and twitter threads as you are (I think), and they're full of shit. it is a separate legal issue, but that is irrelevant. if any of them had the capability to run and own a site featuring both and didn't care or wasn't worried about the legality of it, like Spike obviously has Nico Blog and CDRomance after it have been around like 10 years, they would too. it's a circle jerk about political morality. which is stupid for multiple reasons.
  1. Spike, who owns both did literally nothing it was a guy he hired to be a moderator, and because it happened prior, they blame him and are now saying he should have known better. but he didn't know in the first place about it.
  2. The act in question was a total retard who didn't even do anything he ran a script to download 8kb hack he made thousands of times to boost it's numbers as a prank on RHDN because the mods were pissing him off. and by literal coincidence the site went down not long after and he was convinced his nothing of a prank did it, RHDN Mods proved this was not the case.
  3. him and another (and still current) mod on Spikes romhacking site, laughed about it amongst themselves and said "good they deserve all they get" because the mods again, had been pissing them off. and this is the most hypocritical point they keep bringing up because, these people constantly say this about everything that goes wrong for people they don't get along with, and they mean it. in context this is obviously a joke not them rubbing their hands together and doing the Muttley laugh from Wacky Racers because they defeated their arch nemesis.
  4. they keep saying they started the site to host hacks that RHDN was "censoring", which is just categorically false. they didn't, they did it as an alternative because they thought the mods had inconsistent and unclear rules on there, which they did. in fact, the badhacks guys reached out after they founded the site and were like can we post our nigger fag nazi games on there? and they said no. nothing super offensive. but any other hacks they made were welcome. which is EXACTLY what RHDN's rules were, but they didn't enforce them like that, they removed anything by most of those guys and other people who didn't even do offensive stuff even regular good faith serious hacks, just because they didn't like them. Spike's team was essentially like no racism and homophobia but no hack will be blacklisted if it isn't that, and same for everyone else it was just fair treatment. but these guys act like THEY FOUNDED THE SITE FOR THE RACISTS!! THEY'RE IN LEAGUE!! THEY ARE TOO! but they aren't they just wanted a site with clear rules and no mods wild with power, like RHDN was because the admin literally did not look at or care at what any mod did and they ran rampant.
  5. the Kando guy is Spike's mod because he makes crazy cool shit and loves hacks. but because he laughed at the retarded brette guy's joke about breaking the site, they are calling for Spike's head just for having that guy as a mod like as if in a conversation with a friend you can't laugh at saying "yeah fuck those guys" to guys who make it as difficult as possible to upload something. and to Spike's credit when he found out that guy had made a script that was harassing the site at all even though it didn't do any damage he went sorry man you gotta go, that's not cool to fuck with a website, even small scale bc they irritate you, that's childish shit just don't use it.
  6. the statement from the RHDN admit literally says his mods talking shit about him and doxing him is why he's closing it. HIS OWN MODS, not these guys.
essentially it boils down to they hate the guy for shit he had no control over, didn't know about (but insist he did despite no proof of it and the fact he fired the guy), that THEY know nothing about because they claim it hurt RHDN and was why it was closed down despite the fact it was a year ago and it's own mod staff said that act didn't cause the outage, and was really destroyed as said by the admin by his own mod staff, and think they're a bunch of NEO NAZIS despite the fact they aren't that group either, and told those guys no to the offensive joke stuff. claim a year old message laughing about someone they don't like having problems as absolute proof he has to be one for hiring them and keeping the one who did nothing after. it's absolutely retarded. add that to the fact that the one of the most legendary fan translators probably ever (who's also a prick but not a liar really) and the RHDN mod staff came out and said RHDN's admin's statement was bullshit nobody was doxed, but the one truth was the fact they were complaining about him, FOR THE REASONS THE OTHER TWO GUYS WERE, he was too hands off. the whole situation is people who can't fucking read combining things that aren't related and assigning positions in the situation to the wrong people and running with it because of RIGHT WING RUINS EVERYTHING! when by all metrics you can see Spike and the Kando guy are weeaboo fag/tranny loving liberals

What I'm wondering is what kind of shit the troon-or-troonish RHDN mods were saying that set Nightcrawler off. The more I read into it the more the RHDO/CDRomance guys look relatively reasonable, as reasonable as romhacking autists can be anyway.

As far as Discord goes, emulation communities are ironically the first to smugly rant about the evils of piracy every time some poor sap comes in with a question about running their downloaded Mario 64 rom.
