Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Apologies for the double poost, but I was in the neighborhood of finally buying a PS2 now that my collection of LEGALLY AQUIRED PS2 ISOs is reaching 200gb. I know FreeMcBoot exists for softmodding your console and the memory cards are extremely cheap and easy to come buy, but what would I need to use a HDD for internal storage instead of having to buy/burn a fuckton of discs. Also if anybody has any suggestion for video cables for a monitor/TV screen? I don't have the extra money or space for a CRT as of right now.
you can also now be like me and shove the whole PS2's NTSC, PAL, and fantranslated or english friendly J games on a single 8tb HDD and shove it in that bitch.

as far as cords and stuff, there is basically nothing that will make a ps2 look good on a modern screen outside of a high dollar upscaler. you're not totally fucked because just component cables will do the job just fine, there is just too much wonky resolution shit on the ps2 in particular to do anything to make it look actually good outside of a CRT or upscaler. just to play games and shit just get component cables or if you have hdmi only get a converter. the xbox and gcn were much more forward thinking in this regard where most if not all games had progressive scan and were 480p. almost no ps2 games have progressive scan. but with FMB and OPL you can force settings for better looking stuff when using the component cables. just force 480p and you'll be good to go. I'm lucky in that I just have my giant old living room mitsubishi CRT still from when I was a kid, but I still hook the ps2 up in my living room from time to time for multiplayer instead of my office room where that tv is and with components and forcing 480p it is playable and unless you've played it how it's supposed to look super recently you won't tell the difference, it'll just look like a game that's almost 20 years old whatever it is. but with regular composite cords you won't be able to read any fucking text on a modern display

Someone posted a tutorial, but that video is kind of outdated.

Now you don't even have to format the hard drive. Just drag and drop your games.

As far as video cables, unless your tv has component in (red, blue and green tips) you will have to settle for a hyperkin ps2 to hdmi cable.

Oh, I wish I’d known that before setting mine up with that external program.

Also, unless you’re trying to add every single game ever made, consider using an SSD. The speed is the same, but having a quiet non-spinning drive is nice when a fat PS2 is loud enough as it is.

Turn on the smoothing and the bob deinterlacing this thing does is actually quite good. It's not exactly a cheap cable though and you're around the price where you might as well buy a cheap upscaler like the retrotink2x.

Edit: I guess I should add I have a PS2 set up with an SSD & a System Talks Sugoi Adapter to IDE, which has the better chip that is more compatible plus is the perfect spacing for the HDD adapter, along with original drive rails lifted from the OEM hard drive that came in my JP 50K PS2 to use with OPL. Aaaaaaaand I prefer using discs 🤡. It's nice to just turn the thing on and it goes immediately into games, the number of games I don't have as real copies is pretty limited and mostly fan translations.

As long as you use Homebrew to force all PS2 Games into 480p this is your best, cheap solution.
Definitely don't buy any of the Hyperkin/Pound Products or any of those cheap scalers found everywhere on Amazon they are all total garbage.
Also modern day TVs often wildly differ in how well they upscale 480p, so if you have multiple screens I would test which one upscales 480p the best.

What Dreamcast titles should I check out?

So far I have tried: Soul Reaver (a visual update of the classic PSX game and it does look better, only downside is that you can't move the camera up or down but only to the sides), Ready 2 Rumble (sucked), Cannon Spike (bland), Dolphin Blue (Cult Classic), Spawn: in the Demon's Hand (fun and mindless), Silent Scope, House of the Dead 2, Virtua Cop 2, all the lightgun games are great, Crazy Taxi 2 (very meh, sorry hipsters), and a couple of shmups like Last Hope, Gigawing 1 and 2, Mars Matrix, and Under Defeat.

Do not recommend fighters. I have zero interest.

Do not recommend Sanic.

I rather like Code Veronica if you haven't played, though I did the GC version.

Shenmue 1 and 2 are dumb but if you can get into them they are really special.

Typing of the Dead makes for a fun evening.

Grandia 2 is a good if very easy RPG.

Illbleed -- horror type thing
Chu Chu Rocket -- frantic cat/mouse puzzle
Mr. Driller 2 -- claustrophobic spelunking sim
Dynamite Cop -- 3d brawler
Zombie Revenge -- 3d brawler
HydroThunder -- water race
Bangai-O -- 360 degree poorly translated anime mass murder
this one underrated cult shmup called "Ikaruga" that you probably haven't heard of
Shout-out to Sega Bass Fishing but I assume nobody has an actual Dreamcast fishing controller yet doesn't know there are fishing games

tbh some of those I have played not-so-much, some a whole lot, but if I were taking some CD-Rs to a desert island it would probably be something like those. Either DC exclusive or best versions in all cases I think. You have run through most or all of the lightgun games, sry.

Radirgy. It's a schmup that released that 2006 and the main girl is cute.

Zombie Revenge -- 3d brawler
Pretty neat game that, like a cross between House of the Dead and Streets of Rage. Not great but worth checking out.

I'll throw in a mention for Sword of the Berserk if you like Berserk. Its pretty jank and hard to play but worth a look if you like the manga. Unfortunately instead of a difficulty curve it has a brick wall. You have to fight Zodd about half way through the game and he will absolutely violate you.

Zombie Revenge was just... Chunky. The controls were just awful and killed it for me. Dynamite Cop was equally jank to play. Illbleed is gay.

As far as non mainstream picks or stuff mentioned here if you like older survival horror games, play The Ring. It's fucking terrible but in a funny way. I've been laughing about it for 20 years. There is an NPC that I swear is just Dennis Rodman. hilarious shitty game. Has fuck all to do with the movie besides the curse. The Alone in the Dark game for it is actually not bad.

If you like platformers the Donald Duck and 101 Dalmatians games are pretty good Crash and Spyro clones.

the kiss fps is kind of entertaining, frogger 2 kicks ass, maken x is dope, the Japanese Godzilla games are fuckin cool, Rent a Cop #1, Nomad Soul, Shadow Man, Head Hunter is another good one

coop I recommend star wars jedi power battle or gauntlet legends, fur fighters

There's tons of dope DC games but as with the ps1 or 64 the controls are usually what holds them back until you can get used to em.

Spike decided to bail.
After a talk with the mod team and reading trough the comments here and elsewhere it became clear that if this site is going to have a future it can't be with me on it. Under any capacity. I started this site to streamline the process of uploading romhacks, I think, by listening to the feedback from the few people that actually tried it, that I did a good job.
However, it's worthless if people don't want to use it.
And the main reason is me, given the choice to either keep developing a site that most won't touch or leave, I choose to leave. Thus removing the main issue. I think leaving is the best solution for the site.

WordPress Criticism:

I also want to address some concerns I read online about the site not been worth it because it's just a WordPress site. Let me tell you for what is worth, that WordPress powers 43% of the internet, there are huge websites running WordPress like https://techcrunch.com/ or https://www.nytimes.com/
WordPress is also an excellent content management system, ideal for a site like this, it can (and we are) categorizing everything in the most efficient way with custom post types, taxonomies and fields, which can be used to filter and sort the hacks by.
If ran properly, it can handle hundreds of thousands of entries, much more than what RHDN collected in 20 years! and still load incredibly quick.
Just because there are bad WordPress sites doesn't mean you can't make a good one.

The future:

BenjaminCM who has been developing a hacks review system for the site will become the sole admin of the site. In this transition period I will give him access to the server to make a backup of the files and database so he can host it on his own server, then we'll flip the IP at DNS level. I'll transfer the domain name to his registrar. I'll hand over social media accounts and the Discord server and quit it. Finally when he has full control over everything and everything is working as it is now, I can be removed from the site for good.
It's a transition period that will take some days to get done. Under his control the site gains a great guy as admin, much more knowledgeable and capable than I am.
I'm fine with this, I set to do something and I did it, there's no point on keep pushing to be part of a scene I don't belong to.
Thanks for your time.

yeah The Ring is pretty fucking bad
tbh a lot of it is "hold the button to keep walking down the hallway" with occasional amazingly shitty combat that it's probably better to just watch videos

it's not even a movie version of Sadako you have to fight with a katana or missile launcher

I decided to try out Final Fantasy 7 as a starting point for the series and so far died twice to the roboscorpion. After the first time I did some searching and I read you were supposed to take cover when the tail is up but there was no way to do that.

On the flipside I had better luck so far with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. Downloaded the magipack repack of the PC version and downloaded Partymod which fixes input and adds widescreen support. It seems to work fine on Linux (I'm using Mint 22, Wine-staging 9.14). It actually looks pretty decent.

I also played a bit of Soul Calibur II for the PS2 just doing arcade battles against random enemies.
