Ha welcome to GNU make, it never gets any easier.

Was looking at getting one of the Anbernic handhelds cause of excellent port master ports on the Custom OS, but where do I even get the Linux version of say Shovel Knight/Sonic Mania/TMNT Shredders Revenge? Even with the games I own on Steam?
I have a few of the Anbernic handhelds, they're pretty decent. I'm still using the stock OS on them, I don't really have a reason to change them. I can also recommend the Trimui Smart Pro, for the price it's one of the best.

I used the game data from a Windows install of Sonic Mania and it worked just fine. I was doing it on a Powkiddy device using Rocknix.

A bit late but a few days the Banjo Kazooie decomp has reached 100%
Another n64 game fully decomped to the list, a pc port is still a ways off but it's a start
hope Tooie gets similar treatment even if it's less popular as there isn't really a great way to play it as it runs like dirt on og hardware, it's mostly fine on n64 emus but I find those iffy, and the xbox live port has audio bugs and due to the leaderboard you're prevented from using certain cheats as the game won't save
so a definitive version and way to play it would be nice

Banjo-Kazooie did appear on Nintendo Switch Online (the premium tier) but of course having games tied to an online system is a REALLY shitty way to play.

I've seen the B-K decomp threads on /v/ but there didn't seem to be a lot of interest. I think part of the problem is that people want to see more results like an actual PC port (or ports to other systems). Minish Cap also got decomped last December and I don't remember even seeing the threads then; plus there's no PC port. The Mario Kart 64 decomp is also close to done but I don't expect to see much fanfare on it or a PC port coming.

Paper mario has also been decomped for a while and still nothing as far as i know, which is strange since you'd think it would be one of the top games that would get that focus
Star Fox 64 is also last i heard 75% decomped
Even with a full decomp, there's still a couple of things that need to be done to fully realize the possibility and a pc port is an entirely separate beast altogether, but with enough passion and interest it can be done

there's also that n64 recomp thing I heard about months ago but I haven't heard anything else from it

If anything it proves how weak the Nintendo 64 library is outside of Zelda and Mario 64. I'm no "Snoy" and the PlayStation had some issues of its own, but the lack of interest in Paper Mario (64) isn't very promising when other games get decomped.

For arcade sports:

NBA Jam
NHL Hitz
NFL Blitz
NHL Open Ice Challenge
Golden Tee
Neo Turf Masters
Blades of Steel
Double Dribble
Mutant League Hockey
Mutant League Football
On the topic of arcade sports I personally enjoy the fifa street series on the PS2, just like any game developed by ea sports BIG Link to gameplay video

No I agree, I've always thought the N64 is shit with a few great games
All I care about in regards to the n64 is Tooie, Star Fox, Diddy Kong Racing, and Paper Mario 64, give me ports of those games and I will happily never touch an n64 emulator ever again

Though for the lack of interest in Paper mario, I think i chalk it more up to TTYD being the one that gets the most spotlight in the community, 64 in general feels overlooked and the lack of any great way to play it doesn't help
There is a perfect dark pc port though and I believe it came out quite quickly when it got fully decomped and there's even plans to add in functioning multiplayer, so who knows

usually the N64 ports, when compared to the other console ports, were the worse ones.
  • Gex 2 and 3 - PS1 versions are better
  • Rayman 2 - This one is unique because even though it was made for the N64, the Dreamcast port is the one that gets reused (iOS port and 3DS port uses this version as the base), and winds up being the better version unless you count Revolution for the PS2 (which was more of a remake)
  • Puyo Sun (3) and Puyo Yon (4) - PS1 and Dreamcast versions are better
  • Mortal Kombat 4 - Either the original arcade version, or go with Gold on the Dreamcast.
  • Duke Nukem 64 - lol why bother?
  • Mega Man Legends - PS1 version is better. N64 version runs sluggish when there's a fuck-ton of things on the screen.
So unless it's 1st party, or the PS1 version somehow winds up being worse (South Park, Glover), there's not a whole lot to get out of the N64.

Funny enough there is one N64 port off the top of my head that isn't the worse version of a game.

That is Shadowman. N64 while not as good looking as the DC/PC version is still considered solid port. The port that was the biggest loser would be the ps1 port.

If I remember right N64 also had the best 100% completion reward among all the versions. And that was you get a copy of the best gun in the game so you can dual wield them.

Real shame the second shadowman game was Ps2 only and sucked massive balls.

No, that's the point, it DID get decomped but no PC port emerged. If Paper Mario isn't getting a PC port then hope is dim for Banjo-Kazooie and you can forget about ports for something like Mario Kart 64.
The problem is these ports only happen when one or two autist groups want highly specific ends out of the means, SM64 autists wanted to mod the game harder and add those ugly fucking SGI knockoff models in, OoT autists wanted to make the game even more speedrunner friendly, and all the other games either footdrag or never get one because there's no benefit to their hyper fixations to be gained.

You all do know what the purpose of a decomp is, right? To have free reign over the game’s source code and understand everything about it for modding purposes. Paper Mario and Banjo-Kazooie have both gotten increasingly complex rom hacks over the last couple years that wouldn’t have been possible without their decomps. Pretty much every single major gen 1-3 Pokemon hack from the last few years has used the original game’s decomp as a base. Mario 64 has some absolutely insane shit but people outside the community pretend that the initial PC port and Render96 are all that exist. Just because a game doesn’t have a PC port yet doesn’t mean people aren’t utilizing its decomp.

As for the question of “why doesn’t X have a PC port”; who says someone’s not working on one? The ports for Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and even Majora’s Mask were all in development long before they were formally announced. N64Recomp is still getting commits, and if the GitHub issues are any indication, a lot of people are trying to use existing decomps as a base for new ports but are waiting for recomp to get further along.

Puyo Sun (3) and Puyo Yon (4) - PS1 and Dreamcast versions are better
I play a LOT of Puyo Puyo and I really disagree with this one.

SUN is very similar across PS1, Saturn, and N64, I really don't think you can go wrong. The only difference is on 64 you don't get a 2 min intro video. There's also a little known PC version which is a neat novelty but looks weird because it runs in 640x480.

Speaking of, that's where the DC version of Puyo Puyo~n kinda sucks. It runs at 480i/p and looks funny. The N64 and PS1 versions run at good old 240p and look very sharp. You lose voiced dialog (in the sections you are going to skip anyway) but it's easier to do 4 player mode on N64...

But nevermind any of that because the GBC versions of both are the best. 😎

Now to decompile more PS2 games. With people seething about the PS2 and how the DC was better I wonder if there's at least the intent to decompile more PS2 games than just Jak and Daxter 1 and port them everywhere else, including the DC and GC.

N64Recomp may be the answer for Paper Mario and future ports, especially if they don't have tons of tweaks and features.

Was looking into downloading some old PSP FPS games. My usual go-to is archive.org, but for most old consoles, they have a log in requirement now, which seems like a strange change. I suspect it's either because of bandwidth, or because of all the emulation lawsuits of late.

Is it safe to plug a Japanese phat PS2 into a USA outlet?
Check the voltage in the label, if it's rated for 100V don't do it without a voltage converter. But if it says 120V or shows a range like "100V-240V", it should be fine. American outlets work with 120V, so be careful when you import electronics to the States.

The slimline with external power bricks have the most range if I'm not mistaken, they have the 100V-240V rating.
