Are there any real old school strategy or tactics games? I'm thinking 8 bit systems like the NES or the Spectrum. I know of Famicom Wars, Fire Emblem, and Laser Squad, but that's basically it.

Failing that, any kind of game with tactical choices. I know JRPGs kind of fit the bill, but not really?

I'm looking for them as reference material.
The name is kind of weird but it's called Just Breed and it's on the NES.

I'm sure you can figure out what kind of game it is(edit: NOT HENTAI!) just from these screenshots.

Where to start with Wing Commander? And any other space sims on Steam should I check out? I'm looking for arcade-y fun rather than 1-to-1 accuracy.
Colony Wars was pretty good, it had a nice sense of scale iirc and that's largely missing from many spinning-in-the-void space games.
But it's not on Steam or GoG. ...it seems like it can't even be bought anymore. You can emulate the PS1 version but finding the PC version would be the better choice.

Wing Commander 1 and 2. Rough around the edges, but the thrill wasn’t the dogfights—it was pacing the decks of the Tiger’s Claw and Concordia, rubbing shoulders with the crew, the whole Mass Effect camaraderie.

Drifting stupidly into the wrong sector, playing chicken with asteroids, and when you finally limped back, cockpit sparking, the engineer girl snapped a salute. “Must’ve been a big battle, sir.” :|

There is always the Freespace titles which are pretty much considered the holy grail standard of both story and gameplay. Have a ton of mods and support to basically get it to run on modern system with graphic overhauls.

Another game in that gene that I loved was Tachyon: The Fringe. Had Bruce Campbell as the main lead, a pretty fun combat system (you had the ability to do a "slide" to go in one direct while rotating your ship) and a decent story to follow. Sadly the multiplayer, which was really good, is basically dead.

I liked that one, too. Maybe I'm just a sucker for That Chin. And Freespace was fun as hell, too.

But nobody has mentioned the best WC game?
Seriously, where are my Privateer niggas at?
Or, if just WC-like games? Nobody said Freelancer?
the fuck is wrong with you guys?

There was another one I don't remember the name of and cant be bothered to google, The premise was alien artifacts you had to find "growing" your ship. Story was so-so, escort missions were a bitch, but I liked it. Came out around maybe around 2005-2010.

A static recompilation project for Sonic Unleashed for the Xbox 360 released today, allowing for the game to be easily played on PCs.
In addition, the person behind this project also released the tools he used for it, allowing for potential static recompilations and ports of other Xbox 360 games.
I’m still waiting for avatars to be added to Xenia so we can play the best 360 games as they were meant to be played: Uno and Uno Rush.

My MiSTer build continues. Upgraded to a larger than ITX case so I can add back in the MT32Pi along with a big 8 pole switch to switch between the MT32Pi and a UserIO port. And I can use non-custom cables for much of the wiring, which wastes space. Also a little on-board Ethernet switch to allow the MT32Pi and MiSTer to share one Ethernet.
Next up, wait for the new OLED displays to arrive so I can check the specs I found on-line, as usual every slightly different Chinese junk model will likely differ from another that looks identical.

For a while I considered making the front panel look like an SX64, but that's like work.

Maybe 'Shining Force' fits the bill for you? I remember playing it on a Sega Collection CD when I was younger and enjoying it.

Freelancer is great. Highly recommended.

This is fucking insane

So many great games once locked to Xbox or with shitty PC ports now able to be given a proper PC port

That's a toaster oven, breh.

I’m basically just looking for anything that’s like Final Fantasy for the NES/SNES but isn’t filled with gay anime shit like “The power of friendship and love will triumph over evil.” Rom hacks work too.

No nigga. Black Magic and my Masamune will. Let me grind and get cool shit and beat things.

Saints Row 1 (never released outside of X360)
Saints Row 2 (PC port was a disaster with no DLC's and Deep Silver lied to a man on his deathbed that they'd finish fixing it)
Midnight Club: Los Angeles
Need For Speed: Most Wanted 2005 (the Xbox re-release had next gen graphics that never got ported back to PC)

And probably many, many others. I'm also sure that the devs of the Xenia emulator will have a wild time with this, even if they were the ones directly helping the development of this. Definitely excited to see if we'll get some impressive projects going. Getting Midnight Club: LA and Saints Row 1 running natively on PC would be a huge deal.

If it works it works dude, Beetle was running all my games with no issues while the dude/future tranny behind Cuckstation was still an itch in his father's pants. It's not like they're releasing new PS1 games that require emulators to be continually updated either. Get off your high horse.
Beetle is great, it just has issues with compatibility from time to time. There’s a number of games that just lock the fuck up during pivotal/trivial moments and there’s a handful of audio glitches that make little sense.

That’s not to say that can’t be the case with Duckstation, it has its own share of issues but they’re usually linked to improper settings and that’s an easy fix. It’s just all-around a better emulator, it emulates more accurately and it’s host of settings allow for improved visuals and improved audio that Beetle can’t do. It’s worth a shot.

All the Rock Band games, most of the Guitar Heroes, Driver San Francisco (the PC port got taken down), the Skate games, so much stuff

A (good) PC port of Ninja Gaiden 2, Lost Oddysey, Blue Dragon, are all on my wishlist. Obviously they won't come out nearly as fast as Unleashed because of Sonic Autism but the fact that it's no longer a pipe dream is something beautiful.

Similarly I was just wondering about the likelihood of getting patches and updates for any game outside the top 25 or so of the main library. With emulation I can get the nightly build of PCSX2 and do my own compatibility tweaks. With recompiling it seems like you might need a dedicated autist for every game.
