Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Unfortunatly, playstation 2s are very expensive ($150-$200). I have a 7701 model slim.
Best advice I can give ya there is to keep an eye on fb marketplace and cl. You do catch em cheap, sometimes. People who don't know better clean out closets, too. Good time of year for it, even. Spring cleaning and garage/yard sale season is a great time for retro enthusiasts. You can catch one for $50 or less with some patience.

7701 USB performance is actually faster than earlier models, especially with newer builds of OPL that exploit this feature better. But without the IDE interface, I'd still say look for a 700x or 7001x, or better yet a phat in decent condition. SMB might be a better option for you, too. Set up a raspberry or something similar. Budget friendly options exist.

I got a free trial of prime, so a memory card with freemcboot came today. I don't know if it's because of my flashdrive or I misremember how games used to run, but I do notice some sluggishness. Still, it is an improvement over being unable to play games at all. The picture is very iffy and kind of dark but I still had some fun testing hot pursuit 2 and midnight club 2.
You're right. Playing game's off USB is slow because the USB bus on PS2 is version 1. You can get faster loads playing games over ethernet or through the memory card. This video does a good job explaining the issue and solution.
Play PS2 games from a Memory Card? | MC2SIO | MX4SIO

There's listings on Amazon for a "MX4SIO SIO2SD SD Card Adapter" for $11 with positive reviews from people playing backups. I've never used any memory cards loaders myself so I'm not sure how they differ from the MC2SIO featured in the video.

Your purchase of a FMCB wasn't redundant. The FMCB goes in slot 1 and SD MC in slot 2.
The video stresses that FMCB must be on an official Memory Card. If your FMCB is an unofficial card you can run the latest FMCB installer from your card and install another copy of FMCB to an official card.

I might be able to set it up on my thinkpad and hook an ethernet cable it and the PS2

yeah I was thinking about MX4SIO, but I had the idea in my head (for some reason) that it was slower than usb. Thankfully I still have the OEM 8MB memory card so I could use that.

I completely forgot this existed. I'm not current. Last I looked into it was a few years ago, and it was just experimental and had compatibility issues. Glad to see it has come so far.

We've come a long way, baby.

Yeah, that should do just fine. Just make sure you set the IP configs properly if connecting directly from thinkpad to ps2.

I thought PS2s were like $90 when did they get so high?
There's a curve. Consoles are new and sold for their MSRP. Then the MSRP drops over time. Then the new shit comes out and the console becomes old news and are junk and you can pick up the system and a bunch of games for like $150. This is where Xbox One and PS4 are now. Then after it's been out of production for 7-10 years, people have nostalgia and the console is now "retro" and rockets up in price again.

When I saw the PS2 price in here I had to look up the value of my N64 stuff. Holy shit games I bought for $3 in 2010 are now like $20-30 you weren't kidding. I've never looked up the value of my stuff cus I still play it and wouldn't sell it. But holy shit. I lucked out. Pokemon stadium 2 is like $80 now?!

I bought Conker's Bad Fur Day for ~$10 when my local video store was selling off its N64 games in the early 2000s, ended up selling it for $200 a couple years ago and used that money for the top end N64 Everdrive.

I dismissed all of those cheap retro handhelds ever since they've become popular. My fiance recently got one as a gift, though (Miyoo Mini Plus) and after like a week I got jealous and so I got one for myself. I wanted something a little more powerful so I got the Anbernic RG406V. I ran some tests (display, controls, etc.) and the only problem so far is my IEMs picking up electrical interference form the RGB so I turned it off, which I was gonna do anyways. Otherwise and I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality for a piece of (relatively) cheap Chinesium. Gonna flash GammaOS Next because fuck Google and fuuuuck Baidu telemetry.
I completely dismissed those things for the longest time since I just figured I could use my phone with a controller. The handhelds tend to be a better option since they have their own battery and are a lot smaller than using a phone with a controller. They really have found a gap in the market.

I wonder the extent to which this will hold true for the Xbox One and PS4 given that the vast majority of their quality games were released on the PC.

I got it for $45 back in 2011 (it got stolen with a lot of my stuff though. Fortunately everything I own now was in storage when I got robbed so I didn't lose everything and I didn't lose all of my holy grails or all my consoles. But damn did I lose a lot of good games I picked up really cheap and was actively playing at the time. I was lucky I got another N64 for free in 2020 on so I could play my games again.)
I want an everdrive pretty badly, are they worth it? Do they work well? Most importantly can I finally emulate donkey kong 64 again? I have a lot of trouble running it on literally any PC or emulator I try to run it on.

I thought they were stupid until I got a miyoo mini plus for $20 on temu, now I'm pro emulation hand helds. put onion OS on that bitch. I'm playing legacy of goku right now.

I’ve had my N64 Everdrive for about 15 years. It’s expensive but worth every penny if you actually play on that system often, and it plays everything. Also I’m pretty sure DK64 runs well in modern emulators now.

Retroid is teasing that they’re working on a dual-screen handheld. God I hope that’s true, I would be set if it could play DS at 3x resolution and 3DS at 2x.

That would be a worthwhile investment to me, N64 might be my most played console, not sure though. My miyoo mini plus and my gamecube are taking center stage lately. But I play N64 almost daily so that might be good for me.

Oh. my. GOD. If I can get a handheld that will emulate DS and 3DS my life would change for the better instantly. I really hope this is true. That's actually my most wanted feature in a handheld if i'm perfectly honest. My R4 card SUCKS at playing DS games. Animal crossing lags so badly it's unplayable. Plays some games okay like kirby canvas curse works okay. If that can really handle DS gameplay I'm going to play so many rom hacks and randomizers it's not even funny.

I think this may be what you're referring to:

Oh… yeah that’s it, apparently. Yesterday it was just some cryptic social media posts.

That’s still cool. I held off on getting a Flip 2 so maybe now I’ll have to consider getting a Pocket 5 plus that screen, but I’ll have to see some reviews and a price first. There’s a theory that Nintendo has some sort of patent on dual-screen handhelds, and that’s why they haven’t been made aside from overpriced Windows devices.

When you keep in mind that Nintendo held and viciously enforced a patent on the cross-shaped D-Pad, it's not too far-fetched that they'd have patented the two-screen handheld.

Get into the sequel.

It has a significantly different vibe though, fair warning. And a certain swerve at the end that's fairly creepy and nonsensical.

I wonder if that OneXSugar thing will be any good. It's about damn time that some companies sorted out the two screens issue with DS/3DS emulation. The Pocket 5 + the screen looks to perhaps be the most affordable way to play them with two screens though, as OneXPlayer's stuff tends to be expensive.

Everdrives work really well, but beware of the Chinese ones that don't work as well. They won't harm your system or anything, but the saves are not reliable on a lot of them.

The Everdrive 64 X7 also has a built in NES mode that runs NES very accurately on the cart's FPGA.
