Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

The NES was 1979 tech launched in 1983 in Japan and 1985 in the US. The Master System/SG-1000 Mark III was cutting-edge for 1984 and could do a lot graphically that the NES couldn't touch, even with custom chips.

If Nintendo didn't have the scummy, MS-like policies for third parties and they'd been able to develop for the Master System without losing their Nintendo licensing we could have seen some really killer stuff.
NES was better and had a better library. There's reasons why the Master System only took off amongst Europoors and favelaites. There's also a bunch of games that are on both the NES and the Master System, as well as the NES and 7800. I recommend the SNK 7800 ports much more above the NES ports.

The SG-1000 was basically a crummy ColecoVision clone; same video chip, Z80 CPU, and all the limitations that came with it. It was hotrodded into the more capable Mark III / Master System, but even that wasn’t exactly cutting edge compared to what Nintendo managed with the Famicom.

Meanwhile, despite a smaller palette, the Famicom/NES’s custom Ricoh PPU was incredibly advanced for its time. Devs squeezed amazing results from it thanks to clever hardware mappers, scanline interrupts, and tight hardware integration, features that weren’t really viable or widely used on Sega's 8-bit consoles.

It's really interesting in hindsight, because like yourself I think the 16-bit-era has aged better than the 32/64-bit era, but Miyamoto apparently thought N64 was going to age better than SNES and NES at the time.
3D games are a failed gimmick, they've had 30+ years in the mainstream and still haven't produced much in the way of results. Almost any 5th gen game is virtually unplayable now, with certain exceptions, like Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits Volume 1.

I still don't know why these devs just HAVE to announce this shit right before it gets released.

Just release it, THEN start hyping it up. Once it is out in the wild it is impossible to get rid of it. AM2R lives on because it got released and was up for about a week or two before Nintendo hit the dev with a legal notice. Never there is a whole subreddit that still works on AM2R.

The SG-1000 was, yes, but the SMS was the Mark III, which was significantly more capable.

Congrats on the most retarded take of the day!

Failed gimmicks don't last 30+ years, moron.

That sentiment is true, but AM2R was announced years before its release.

Mark III, which was significantly more capable.
Exactly. 8KB RAM to NES' 2KB. 16KB VRAM to NES' 2KB. Double the CPU clock. But the big thing that makes NES games characteristic, that makes them look dated, is NES' inability to use more than 2 bits a tile for color, which means if you want non-square sprites, ie. use transparency, you get 3 colors per sprite tile, versus SMS' 15 in Mode 4.

There used to be a god-tier DOSBox emulator called Boxer, which would do the grunt work of installing DOS stuff and creating nice pre-packaged game bundles to click and play, but got killed when Apple decided that 32-bit applications were "obsolete". On Windows, I can't find a good DOSBox alternative at all, trying to fuck around with DOSBox-X results in stuff that runs like ass, so I have to stick with GOG's outdated configurations.
Not sure if this is something that you are avoiding or if you already use it, but have you heard of eXoDOS? I've never tried it myself but it seems like a very all inclusive type emulator that while still using DOSBox, it will run all of the games very simply while still allowing you to tinker with the games as you will and allowing you to save all of your settings for every individual game. There's even a download that comes with thousands of games already included if you have the space for it.

Is there a Goldeneye 007 decompilation/source port? My Google fu is lacking and brings up unfinished projects, totally-not-AI posts about the Half-Life 2 Mod, and people saying to use the wonky mouse injector with Mupen64.
I'm not sure if you've tried it or already mentioned it but there's always 1964 GEPD. A simple google search should take you right to multiple pages hosting it. I swear by it, it's been my go to way of playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark for years and I love it. I actually might love it too much since I fucking replay them so damn often. I've probably played through Goldeneye and Perfect Dark 50 times each since downloading this. Playing these games on mouse and keyboard is a gamechanger.

Those Super Mario Maker-like shadows, disgusting. Is it that hard to decompile Super Mario Bros. and put in QoL features like wide-screen? Also, if you're talking "DX features" I'd better see You vs. Boo back.

The Master System is cool until you realize you can’t rotate sprites, have worse default audio capabilities, have to have significantly larger cart sizes to store even basic games, have nothing on the same level of mappers and expansion chips, have to reach over to the console to pause, have a middle saturated color gamut at the expense of bright tones, have a weird sqround thing instead of a d-pad and the “muh arcade” appeal falls apart by late 1988 due to arcade hardware advancing that quickly

AM2R being better Metroid than what Nintendo has released in the last 15 years. And they just had to kill it around Metroid's 30th, nothing but clASS from ninty. Still no release date on Prime 4 also lol.

Beloved and not mentally ill emulator dev stenzek is chimping out and is actively deleting Duckstation builds on Arch linux (link here). The quote here:
Scripts: Remove PKGBUILD
I originally provided this an alternative to the broken AUR packages. However, it seems that Arch users would rather use broken packages andkeep complaining to me instead of their packager. I specifically forbidpackages for DuckStation (see README.md), and there's no way to requestremoval of these packages without handing my details over to adistribution I want nothing to do with.So this is step one. Next step will be removing Linux support entirely, because I'm sick of the headaches and hacks for an operating system thatonly compromises 2% of the userbase, and I don't even use myself. But I'mhoping the Linux community will be reasonable, because as someone givingup my free time and not being compensated in any way, I shouldn't haveto deal with this.Just grep the source for "wayland" and you'll see what I mean.

>time of Genesis launch
Don't act like the Mega Drive didn't fumble its reputation from launch until Thunder Force II came out, Sega's internal devs for the home systems were running on discarded cigarette butts in terms of quality overall by the time the MD launched and gave the world wonderful games like Different Background Framerate Harrier II and Osomatsu-kuso.

I'm amazed at how much power my shitty little Android phone has in emulating Gamecube, PS2 and even fucking Wii U. But non-tactile touch screen controls make me feel like a fucking third worlder.
I'm aware controller shells exist but I wouldn't be able to use wired headphones, and with Bluetooth headphones the audio is way delayed (it's not like this on video playback, the BT audio must be delaying the video slightly to make it sync, which obviously doesn't work for gaming)
Is there such a thing as a controller shell with headphone jack pass through or something? Probably not since phones with headphone jacks at all seem to be rarer than hens teeth.

There's shit like this which would leave the headphone jack but it looks pretty clunky, shitty and breakable. And not really properly portable at all. has anyone used something like this with success? Maybe I should just get one of those chink linux/android portables.
