I'm definitely not arguing for a 1:1 equivocation. Moreso a general similarity in that the Overton Window would now label them both as 'far right'.

I agree that Powell's motivations and rationale differ from Spencer's radically, but I also think these things are impossible to distangle from presentation. If - like Spencer - you arrive at positions either out of contempt for the other or to be a contrarian and rationalise them afterwards without any critical analysis of your fundamental principles, you will come across as a blubbering idiot. It's very evident; post-hoc rationalisations stick out like a sore thumb. No man is free of post-hoc reasoning entirely nor his biases, but men like Powell exhibit in their manners and speech the fact that they have critically assessed their foundations and Socratically analysed themselves.

I think to call Spencer a demagogue is to give him too much credit. Spencer doesn't have the talents befitting of a demagogue, let alone the reputation; he isn't charismatic enough to manipulate significant numbers of people into supporting his cause, and he sure isn't tough or imposing enough to seriously mobilize the people who already agree with him. Coming to think of it, I don't think even the most exceptional among his political opponents really take him seriously or consider him a threat at this point, which is very telling of his effectiveness as a political figure.

Fair enough. I was always under the impression that the West has gotten progressively more left wing, so it's always shocking when someone from today is way more reactionary than someone from 50 years ago, despite both of them being far right.

To be honest, I'm not entirely unconvinced that Spencer isn't a plant by the powers that be, as unlikely a scenario as that may be. You're also failing to account for the fact that Richard Spencer is not very smart, especially when compared to Enoch Powell. A more apt comparison to Powell would probably be Jared Taylor, and I think we can both agree that both in demeanor as well as substance they are exceedingly similar.

Seems like Ricky trying to distance himself from the salt-right frankenstein he in large part created, and rather conveniently now that its starting to blow trouble his way. I always had a bit of a theory that he never really gave a fuck about any of it. That it was just elaborate political daydreaming to him. It's kind of disappointing in a weird way to me. The lack of conviction I suppose.

Richard Spencer: U.S. Military Should Have Enslaved Haitians After Hurricane Instead Of Providing Relief

Richard Spencer, the infamous alt-right figurehead, said on a podcast earlier this year that he believed the United States military should have enslaved Haitians after a hurricane struck the island, rather than provide humanitarian aid.

On his Altright.com podcast in February, Spencer lamented that the United States military never engages in war “for the right reasons,” which he said are when “you want to dominate someone, you want to take their territory, you want to take their women.” And if those reasons don’t suffice, Spencer said, he believes it is acceptable to go to war simply for “vainglory.”

When one of his guests began to complain that the United States Navy sent ships to provide humanitarian aid to Haitians after a hurricane devastated the country last year, Spencer had another idea for what the military should have done.

“Exactly, no. You should go enslave them. That would actually be a proper war aim,” Spencer said, before apologizing for “really going nuts” and then retracting that apology because “you need to go nuts in order to prove a point.”

Spencer said he hoped white people in America get so frustrated with the military’s humanitarian efforts that they “flip over into this domineering type, and I obviously hope that happens.”

“This is the kind of thing that’s truly traditional and historical. You display your power. Phallic symbols in the center of the capital city. That’s what it’s all fucking about,” Spencer said.
