Trump's victory had a lot to do with this. GamerGate was a huge deal to these people, and they would of certainly never let it go even with a Hilary victory. But they likely always took comfort knowing that their "progressive" politicians were in charge of things. This revolt against them was terrible but was just online shit that didn't really matter, and would eventually be crushed with more progressive control over the government.

But then Clinton lost. People like Bob realized for the first time that his side wasn't as in control of things as one might seem. This revolt against them might be a lot bigger then expected, and it wasn't just going to die off like he assumed it would.

While he may not blame GamerGate for literally everything like Wu does, he definitely views it as the major catalyst for everything that has occurred since.

In some places it's the law, I believe UK had and may still have this law, but in others such as the USA, there's no law. Having killable children, however, can wind up getting your game an AO rating by the ESRB which is basically a death sentence in sales. Console manufacturers won't license AO rated games, and retail chains wont carry it. Like an NC-17 film, it's basically branded as porn as ostracized regardless of the actual content.

Edit: With Steam selling all games now, so long as the content is legal in your region, I think a PC version would probably sell fine so long as their content filter doesnt lump all AO rated games into the Porn pile.
