Its also worth remembering the quality of life that the different groups are used to. Cletus out on his hick farm is pumping his own water, probably has a crappy satellite internet connection if he's lucky, and he's shitting right into a septic tank. He keeps his own vehicle in repair cuz if he didn't know how to, he'd be fucked and hours away from a shop, and he probably has a fuel storage on site for his farming equipment. He's already condition to cook most of his own food, because its never been a real option to not. If the shit hits the fan and the civil war kicks off, the red state population that doesn't even actively participate won't be nearly as hit by the service failures, as the local quality of life is already much lower.

Whereas within a week of supply line restrictions in cities, your gonna see riots as the service industry collapses and a million urban mayo ghouls can't order in pizzas to wait out the storm. Urban populations are not in any sort of position to survive any protracted service interruptions, much less active sabotage. Even if emergency food and supplies are being pushed out, most of the population will resent it aggressively for not being what they're accustomed to. You can't even pitch everyone together to try and produce it locally, as huge swathes of the population become complete dead weight that only know how to produce digital goods, not material ones.

Most if not all federal workers of any agency do the same. They may have privately held political beliefs but they serve the people of the United States by oath. Not the Democratic party. Not the Republican party.

Hey, in Spain Gibraltar is never debated by anyone because it's the perfect smokescreen for politicians. When shit gets tough for any important politician, they always bring up "Gibraltar Español" as a diversion, and it works like a charm. Specially among conservatives.

It's as you say, the main reason why Spain tells Scotland to stay in place is because it would give Basque Country and Catalonia (and maybe even Galicia if things weren't so conservative over there) a precedent for independence and they would demand it as well. And you can say that other countries would as well (Germany with Bavaria, France with Brittany and part of the Basque Country or the Netherlands with the Flemish), but it's in Spain where the independents are causing a lot of trouble, to the point that the last stint essentially made every single person in Spain hate Catalonia, even if it's technically undeserved hate since it's just a fucking political stunt anyways and their prez run away. It has reached the point an active boicot is happening against companies located in Catalonia by parts of the Spanish population. And the Basque country has gone the route of Ireland, with former terrorists becoming politicians that cry about how much Spain oppresses them and how they were mistreated in the past by the Guardia Civil while pursuing political activism after the fact that they got arrested left and right during 2012, moment where they decided to leave the sinking ship.

Also, do the Scots bitch about how wealthy they are unlike the rest of the country like Catalonians do? Are they really bitchy about anglos? I already know about their constant hateboner with England, but i don't know if it reaches old Basque levels of pseudo-racism.
