To me, the approach that he's talking about comes across as rather insincere, as if the movies a lot of the time are afraid that they'll become the butt of the joke if they don't constantly wink at the audience and are unwilling to fully commit to their premise. Plenty of genre fare that have outlandish premises and play it straight, such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones, have gone on to see great critical acclaim and cultural relevance, and I don't see why the MCU, which people have been following for almost ten years now, is any different.
