He's probably always got a decent buzz going at least during daylight hours and however long he tweets into the night. I don't think he's getting blackout drunk every day, I think he saves that for celebratory binges. Capcom was definitely going for a more international audience with SF 2. Ryu and Ken weren't even going to originally be in the game, and then only Ken was before they decided to include both.

I feel like adaptation of Street Fighter 2 tend to focus more on Guile (and to a lesser extent Chun Li and Cammy) because they have a more personal stake in fighting Shadaloo. In 2 especially, Ryu is just kind of there, fighting in a tournament.

I think the developers only really consider Ryu the "hero character" of 1, Alpha, and V. Guile is the hero of 2, Alex of 3, and 4 is kind of a mess, but Abel probably has the most actual plot importance if anyone ever cared to flesh out that plot.

Bob is definitely wrong about any "American reinterpretation of Ryu" though. The American adaptations of Ryu (the movie and cartoon) made him and Ken comic relief.

Oh, certainly you're right - I'm just focusing solely on Street Fighter 2 which is where I'm certain Bob's knowledge begins and ends. I'm sure that every following iteration just pollutes his idealized nostalgia. He probably turned his back on the game when the PC Engine and Genesis received ports. If the console wars were his Vietnam, that must have been his 9/11.

When you look at the media generated from just that game, (and it's four additional revisions, I suppose) the Japanese adaptations definitely made Ryu the center. The animated move and the SF2:V series both made Ryu the star of his journey to be the best.

As you noted, the American cartoon made Guile the center, as did the live action film which some people have reverence for, but I don't know. There may have been a comic book or something around then?
