Oh, it's even worse than that. Comparing Judaism and Christianity to Tolkien vs Twilight is so exceptional it just proves that dude's Muslim friend doesn't understand either one. Like, at all. The term "Christian" didn't even come from the Church itself; it was an externally-applied moniker that came from the city of Antioch (Syria). Both Jews and Christians believe in a Messiah. It's just that Jews rejected Jesus as being the Messiah and still wait for the Messiah to come. (FWIW the Muslims believe in a sort of messiah too).A Very Big Fish said:Thinking Judaism isn't connected to Christianity is a pretty retarded take, I'm surprised it didn't come directly from Bob. The earliest Christians were pretty much all Jewish. The reason the apostles went to Synagogues to preach first was because they would understand the message much easier than randos like the Greco-Roman pagans. Yeah, the two basically were in a schism from the word go, but that definitely didn't mean they thought that they weren't Jewish.
Bob's addled pate can't grok that God doesn't force himself on people who reject him. Forcing people to not-reject Him doesn't make him a STRONGK God. But then of course, Bob can't completely grok the concept of Free Will, either.A Very Big Fish said:Also, I love Bob calls God weak because secular society has rejected Him. That's nearly a non-sequitur with how poor that reasoning is. And I've seen memes like the dumb Thor one, or a similar one where it was something like, "Your God was nailed to a cross, mine has a hammer, figure it out" or some turbo fedora shit like that. One in terms of secular impact. Christianity dominates the globe and has done so for centuries, and if Bob means God as just vaguely Abrahamic, that would include Muslims and increase the impact even more. Two, in older times, the conception of God & Jesus were a lot more hardcore than most people would treat it today. Look at stuff like The Dream of the Rood, which is a story told from the pov of the cross that Jesus was nailed to, and it basically has Jesus being treated as a conqueror choosing to fight death itself. The cross is treated as his loyal retainer. And this was a common view for the newly converted Anglo Saxons.
Or some early converts from Norse paganism basically stapled the two religions together, having Adam and Eve as the two survivors of Ragnarok and we're actually living in the world post-Norse myth.
In fact, several denominations (like us filthy Lutherans lol) actually believe that you cannot "by your own reason and strength" (Luther's words) come to Jesus. It is only by the Holy Spirit's working on a person that one is even able to believe. Now, while it's taught that you can't choose to choose Jesus, you can choose to reject. Now, I know there's baptists and others that think you CAN 'come to Jesus' of your own will, but the way we figure it, chances are the Holy Spirit was already working if a person came to Jesus. Bob believes in his own reason and strength, so it's not surprising that it appears the Holy Spirit fled him long ago.
