Check out the cast interviews where there is so much self-congratulatory nonsense about being "the first Puerto Rican elf!" (lol) or "the first female dwarf color!" (that one isn't even an exaggeration) or how so many of the trained monkeys actors are "activists" and you'll see where some of the dread is coming from.

There are also just a lot of red flags for people who've been sandbagged by this crap before in multiple franchises that went woke. Elrond, a character who at the time of this series should be anywhere from around 1800 to over 3000 years old, and who should be an established, seasoned, elder, is depicted as something out of a Middle-earth boy band, and looking hopelessly naive to the much savvier Galadriel (whose depiction as an armored warrior leading armies has got a whole host of problems of its own).

Some of the criticism is overblown -- although the actress playing the black dwarf Disa is the most obnoxious on this stuff by a wide margin, there's really no lore problem with having dark-skinned dwarves, especially if they want to flesh out the various dwarven bloodlines beyond the line of Durin depicted in LotR. Similarly, I don't think the occasional dark-skinned elf is anything to get worked up about.

For more concrete criticisms, wait until the show comes out. But the cast interviews and the nasty defensiveness of the showrunners is plenty of cause for concern.

EDIT: One specific line from the Disa actress -- not sure if it's been echoed by her castmates -- is especially obnoxious, and that is showing more characters "of colour" and of course female characters with so much "agency" makes this version of Tolkien so much more accessible ... as if the most popular fantasy novel ever written was so occulted and closed off because it didn't have a fat loudmouth black dwarf in it somewhere. It's the elevation of superficial qualities of race and gender over the universal human experience that afflicts every franchise that goes to the mat on "representation" and it's hitting the last franchise that needs it.

I know that Tolkien's son wasn't a fan of Jackson's films, and I get why to an extent. He hated the work being commercialized and he felt it was dumbed down (and getting ripped off on royalties probably didn't help). I get where he was coming from, to an extent, though I still love Jackson's work.

That being said, Jackson was very much respectful of Tolkien's work, and he did his best to adapt some very dense books into some not quite so dense movies. Amazon is basically the manifestation of corporate greed, and I cannot think of a dumber group to appeal to than the retards among us who can only empathize with people of a similar melanin count.

Does anyone really think that the corporate megalith of Amazon is going to be the one to handle these changes with care and depth? Or are they just going to bumble a long with a mediocre fantasy show and blame all the criticism on racism/sexism/whatever straw they can grasp at.

Interesting sidenote on China: they got mindfucked early on, even before Mao took over. The educators were all commie at a certain point and competely fucked Chinese written language so that nobody could read the classics. This was all part of a deliberate effort to sever the Chinese people from "Old Culture", because muh superior fyootchah. So then when Mao took over, the students were all for it because they were brainwashed and ignorant.

It is true that Mao invented Simplified Characters (SC) as a ploy to distance people away from classical Chinese culture, but I'm more pragmatic on Simplified Characters. Try writing three 1500-word essays in three hours during your Chinese History exam! I don't share my peers' animosity towards SC; I was born after the Cultural Revolution, and as a child in Hong Kong I learned Regular Characters from school and from life while picked up SC by reading library books -- I didn't even consciously learn them at all; it was just that the science books from Mainland China were so much better than those from Taiwan, and before long I just knew how to read and write SC. I'm often surprised that most non-Mainland Chinese people my age cannot read SC: they are shutting themselves out of a lot of valuable resources.

A few years ago Mister Metokur had a theory as to why we see grown ass adults like this. It mainly has to do with the fact that millennials and zoomers grew up in one of the most peaceful times in human history. There were no great wars for them to fight, no great rights movement to get behind, no great places to discover. We have two generations of people whose souls are wanting more. You have the more active ones creating insipid gender rights movements (what rights don't trannies have?) but for the more lazy ones they want their entertainment to make them feel important. This is why you are seeing so many grown ass adults demanding that there is this representation in this and that with the hopes of, for a brief few hours, they can feel like they did something with their life. That by living vicariously as this character that looks like them for a few hours they can feel like they conquered something, that they are special and not a total loser. It is basically like herion. These people need that dopamine hit because they aren't getting it anywhere else.

Computers were almost entirely dominated by western devs from America and Europe, and the 3DO was a platform almost entirely consisting of western developed games. It’s really not until the playstation/N64 era that western console games started getting more consistent releases.

But even the NES, Genesis, and Snes has western games, they just didn’t have the huge budgets for marketing that the major Japanese games did at the time. America still had a pretty strong arcade scene in that period though.

TV Shows no main character has ever been explicitly LGBT except on Runaways and that's from the comics. But in comics it was Sam Wilson Cap, Riri Williams Iron Man, Jane Foster Thor, Amadeus Choi Hulk and Perlmutter was side lining the X-Men a popular seller for decades for the Inhumans. You can see why comic retailers were annoyed this was all happening at once when the OG characters were in great demand and instead of understanding their frustration the industry called them sexist and racist and that became the narrative. So, to the SJW crowd Marvel stood up to racist/sexist and defended diversity. Also, since Blobby thinks all Dudebros are racist and sexist you know which side he fell on.

The first one you're referencing was from an ambiguously canon comic referencing a Pre-Crisis story where he was a political prisoner at a work camp though it was spread around out of context.
