As I've said in this thread before, he fills a small but dedicated niche of "Golden Age" Nintendo purists.

Bob fills a small but dedicated niche: oldfag Nintendo fanboys* who can't let go of the pre-Playstation era. They venerate a "golden age" where graphics were all sprites, Big Friendly N was king and vidya hadn't yet been tainted by the evil megaconglomerates (such as $ony and MiKKKro$oft) turning the innocent and playful mascot platformer paradise that the industry was then into a literal Dark World of "mature" "cinematic" titles filled with "realistic" "graphics over gameplay" for people who associated mentally with "boring grown ups". No one under the age of 30 (outside of the most autistic fringe of hipsters) thinks this because unlike Bob they didn't grow up in his metaphorical pre-invasion Imaginationland. Those who did and share Blob's opinions look up to him as a spokesperson for their little retroTendo cult since he's the only active voice deluded enough to belong to them.

It was Screw Attack mostly, but I actually remember watching Game Overthinker videos before even that happened and can't really remember how I found him. He had a devoted enough following back then to flood the vote on Screw Attack's contest, didn't he? A lot of his recognition came from when he hit the Escapist and prior to that he was guesting on one of their podcasts fairly often I believe, which is how he angled his was onto that site.

Bob is like a lot of the TGWTG people in that he's not capable of toughing it out on YouTube like anyone with a modicum of talent. His video production quality has been basically the same since at least 2011. Bob's videos are simultaneously over produced and under produced. Its abysmal and when he's making $3000+ a month on patreon for this shit you'd think he could afford to buy a decent high end mic (not nearly as expensive as people think) and mount some sound treating foam in that basement he lives in, of course, that would fuck up his green screen wall. His green screening might be some of the worst I've ever seen because he's either too cheap or too stupid to light his shots properly so you get moments where he greenscreens parts of his head out of existence. Again, something someone making $3000+ a month on patreon should be able to afford to remedy. Hell, why waste the time greenscreening if it looks like pure shit when "guy sitting at his desk" has been a tried and true YouTube format for years and is much less demanding to light?

My point is, Bob HAS to glom on to other sites like Screw Attack, the Escapist, and geekdotcom to stay sustainable. He can't act with an ounce of professionalism online so he'll eventually get jettisoned by geekdotcom the same way Screw Attack and Escapist cut ties. Mark my words, once geekdotcom is done with him he'll move on to whatculture.

A few posts back you were all talking about how hard it is to not get mad at Bob and all that shit above is why I can laugh. He's just so bad at what he does and his overconfidence about it is hilarious to me. The dude in utterly incapable of admitting that maybe his videos are bad and because of that he's unwilling to take steps to fix them, he'll only double down on their flaws like he did with his story line segments in GameOverthinker videos. Pretty much everything he does wrong I learned how to avoid in like, 2 hours. This man is pure, distilled Dunning-Kruger. One of the least talented or exceptional individuals I've ever encountered online who is absolutely convinced he's God's gift to culture. It's fun to watch once you can look at it through the right lens.

His book most def. It revealed a lot of shocking things about his life. Like his family not really liking him, skipping a funeral to buy an AC, not going into his house as an adult until everyone has gone to bed, staying in his car playing vidya instead.

This was also the time when Internet ad bucks were still rather loose, so companies like Machinima and dozens of gaming sites were hauling in just about anyone who could do videos on regular intervals and had more than dozen subscribers.

Bob's later career has pretty much been based on feeding off from this series of accidental successes while slowly being pushed downwards as stiffer competition steps in, companies start cutting deadwood and YouTube becomes more and more cutthroat.

As much as I shat on Bob above, it's also worth noting that Bob is very consistent with uploads and video format, which tends to help a lot with these sort of things. If you know what you're doing, something as low as 70,000 subs can be a nice place to live on Youtube.

Something else to note is Bob fills a niche. I was a fan of Bob back in college when I was still letting myself be defined by the fact that I had been bullied in highschool. That mentality goes a LONG way for Bob. That smug sense of superiority that come with having been shoved in a locker 10 years ago because you're a geek really helps Bob relate to the kind of people who occupy his twitter mentions (the ones who aren't mocking him at least) most people grow out of that mentality, usually once they get a real job and have to work with enough normies to realize 1.) they aren't special and 2.) normies are pretty okay most of the time (even the ones who bullied you are probably good people now). People who stay there forever tend to be a lot like Bob, socially unpleasant and forever working in freelance gigs or jobs where they're still allowed to insulate themselves from normies and bask in their own self-ascribed special status.

I can still remember that early Overthinker video where Bob basically tried to HOME RUN SLAM DUNK BURN Grand Theft Auto by saying that Shenmue was basically GTA without the violence and scarface worship. I thought that was a SAVAGE TAKEDOWN in 2008 or whatever and when I revisited it a few years later it just seemed really sad and petty, like he was REALLY insecure about the things he likes and the things his dislikes. Like who cares if someone likes GTA or Shenmue? Whats it matter to anyone outside of that one person?

But yeah, competition is getting stiffer. There's a lot of people making videos about retrogaming and films who are a lot more knowledgeable, fun, or talented than Bob. That was a lot of what caused me and my friends to jump ship for greener pastures.
