Matter of fact, the USA was almost named "Columbia".

He's also largely wrong about the Italian pride thing. Some Columbus statues owe their existence to it, of course, but the man was a figure of American myth, not restricted to one ethnic group. Now, the one at Columbus Circle does owe a hell of a lot to Italian pride, but even there it's not the whole story.

I have a feeling Bob (and the cultural barbarians he's allying with, of course) is much too ignorant of history to understand that the spirit of iconoclasm rarely ends with statues.

The more I think about it, the more I get the feeling that Bob is really a reactionary at heart. Think about it: he idolizes the past (specifically the 80s which he grew up during), wants to do away with democracy (or at least bastardize it beyond recognition) and take the power out of the hands of the people and place it in the hands of an elite few by virtue of being "better" than everyone, believes in a Manichean philosophy that frames life as one giant struggle to defeat evil no matter the cost, and thinks human worth is inherent due to arbitrary characteristics. His Superior Future is really a twisted, 21st-century Dark Age when you really think about it.

Bob fails to see that mass immigration actually really doesn't benefit those unless they are middle class or higher. In fact, there is many arguments to be made against immigration from a humanitarian standpoint because the most educated tend to try to go to "greener pastures" rather than stay and better their country.
