It's not even entirely clear we can survive on Mars thanks to the radiation. Even our own moon might be impossible to do much with because of the hazards of lunar dust (they tested some on lab rats and it was so toxic it fucked them up at a chromosomal level).

I personally think we'll overcome most if not all of these obstacles, but it's not going to be any time soon, and it sure as shit isn't going to depend on whether the Democrats or the Republicans are running the government.

I think at some point he actually did address the fact that historically Democrats haven't been great for space exploration because of the element that considers it a waste of money better spent on social programs, but as with anything that sullies his black and white view of the world he simply handwaved it. (And really, it's even less black and white than that -- you can't say the Democrats are always shitty for space exploration when you stop to think we probably owe the moon landing to Kennedy.) As to where it is? Fuck if I know, man. I can't keep up with that endless stream of nonsense on Twitter. It's apparent that Bob has problems distinguishing reality from fiction. His obsession with media and him viewing it as one of the most important aspects in life lends me to speculate that Bob believe's that fiction (fiction in the science or fantasy variety) is only false in the fact that it didn't happen, not in the fact that it can't happen.

Even if the story didn't happen, Bob still believes what happens in it could happen in real life. He doesn't understand that in real life there are limitations to what is shown in media. Normal people can accept certain things that occur in fiction thanks to suspension of disbelief, but we know at the end of the day that those things can't really happen.

Bob doesn't though. He sees something on TV or in a movie and proceeds to accept that as a possible outcome. Screw real life implications, if it could happen in a movie it could happen in the real world with just the right people!

Very true. Historically, space is very much a bipartisan thing; The Planetary Society was quite pleased with what the Republican congress did with NASA's budget in the last few years of Obama's presidency, and it's probably incontestable that the best-informed major senator in recent years was Newt Gingrich.

Of course, it's possible to lean towards supporting the Democratic initiatives in space, but I suspect Bob isn't well-informed enough to discuss Republican space policy vs. Democratic space policy intelligently. It certainly isn't the slam-dunk he imagines it to be.

As a God-bothering man myself, I would like to give you a lesson in how to make converts.

First, you set the example. Through kind, selfless actions, you cultivate a personality that makes you an engaging person to be around. If you have trouble telling what good actions are, pay attention to how people respond to those actions and if they invite you to parties and get-togethers.

Second is a very crucial one- Shut up. Say a few things, but the less you talk, the more time people have to reflect on your words and think "That person had some good ideas. I wonder what else they could tell me". Constantly preaching will have the adverse effect of making people avoid listening to you at any opportunity they can get. In other words, you have to make them feel smart and like your ideas were their ideas. Then they will more readily accept them.

That would require Moviebob letting sizeable air out of his ego, so I'm not holding my breath for his vision of the future to happen.

Just saying, the fundamental basis of the Star Trek society is that scarcity is a thing of the long past. I guess the idea is that humans would progress past materialism once everybody could in theory own anything, and move into an era of generosity if they knew they would never need anything.

But that is never going to happen, and it doesn't help anyone to pretend that it has happened already.
