With or without James Gunn, you probably could predict the new guardians movie will have 80s music, Quill and Drax acting like morons, serious moments inter-cut with jokes, and "I am Groot" jerking off.

The first one was all right. It was the first MCU movie to not have a chromatic scheme somewhere between "dog shit" and "Lars von Trier film", it embraced camp and kind of reveled in its own absurdity, the cast actually had chemistry, and everyone involved clearly understood they're making capeshit. It was a fun-ass popcorn muncher, and lived up to its expectations unlike, say, the last two Captain America movies or the first two Avengers movies where they tried to be serious and make social commentary.

The second one was awful, because the execs got the wrong message from the first's success and transformed it into a soulless meme and fan wank fest. Everyone loved Yondu in that movie because he was the only one who got character development and showed signs of life, and just wasn't commuting from one plot point to the other as the script demands.
