Actually I have a pet theory about this (and this is something I came up with right on the spot, so take it with a grain of salt). All of these people started operating in the two thousands. That's when criticism and subversion of traditional media became in vogue (think about how the Simpson's subverted all those old sitcoms about the 80s family by making Homer Simpson a fucking retard). The internet gave them this opportunity to be the first people to take a shot at analysis of a whole slew of traditional media properties. They became the first people to do what they do and that probably puffed up their ego. "I don't see anyone making a 20 minute rant about the Toxic Avenger," Bob thinks as his ego inflates. This is probably also why people like Soygon think their so smart, because back in the early days of GG they were the only people with big platforms arguing against social justice.
